Newport Harbor and Your Momentum

The other day I visited the entrance to Newport Harbor in Newport Beach, California.

This is a beautiful harbor, where some of the most expensive yachts in the world are docked.

There is a lesson in that harbor, and in others around the world, including some of the ones I used to bring a boat into the Midwest years ago. There are speed restrictions in Newport Harbor.

You cannot just come out of the place where you dock your boat and suddenly take off at high speed before you get to the ocean.

You’ve got to abide by the speed limits of the harbor so that you don’t cause problems for other boats. You don’t “rock the boat” so to speak, until you get out to the ocean.

There is a lesson here in setting goals in life. Isn’t it the same lesson? Too often, when we set goals, whether it deals with our health, our weight, our finances, or our careers, we want to take off like a shotgun.

But, we’ve got to realize that, when it comes to setting goals, it’s really important to break down long-term goals, big goals, into shorter goals, small, short-term goals that we have to be patient with and take one step at a time until we get to the big goals.

It’s the same concept in Newport Harbor. You first have to come out at slow speed. And then, when you come to the ocean, at the end of the harbor, you can take off at a much faster speed.

So, may I suggest to you that, whatever goal you have wanted to set, and you’ve got the big picture, then break it down to something manageable. Break it down to pieces that are manageable, that you may take at a slower pace at first, until you pick up the pace and you’re able to accomplish much larger goals.

When it comes to setting sail for your future, may I suggest that you take some small steps first before you can go at a much faster pace. I believe that will help you create momentum.

I set some short-term goals that I can believe in and I’m taking one step after another.

After doing a recent seminar in Oakland, California, I had the opportunity to interview the CEO of another company that is succeeding in the current economy.

I spoke with Eric Flowers, the president and CEO of Ramsell Holding Corporation (ramsellcorp.com). Ramsell manages and develops tools and systems for public health programs. The company was originally formed in 1964 by Eric’s father and, one way or another, Eric has been involved with the company for much of his life – actively, full-time, the past 16 years.

I asked Eric what his company had experienced with the economy during the past few years. He related: “By and large, our business has focused on government so far. And, the budget deficits that the government has had in this tight economy have been a challenge. We’ve had to focus on ways to highlight the value and really focus on the value that we bring.”

When I asked him what they did specifically to get through this time, and to thrive, Eric said, “We’re really working to find efficiencies and never losing sight of not just bringing value to the customer, the public health entity that’s paying us, but also trying to improve the outcomes of the patients who receive the services from these programs.”

When I asked Eric what he would say is the key to his success, he told me that they like to keep it simple and really focus on bringing value. His key point is: How can we bring value? He feels that that’s what will ultimately make his company successful.

It seems like a simple enough prescription for success that Eric presents – focus on great value for the customer.

You are special. You are unique. You are destined for greatness. I see it in you – you are a Champion! Have a powerful day!

Before doing a recent seminar in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, I had the opportunity to interview the CEO of another company that is succeeding in the current economy.

I spoke with Deb Teglia, President of Black Diamond Group (blackdiamondgrp.com). She told me that Black Diamond builds welcoming mats for people. She said, “We do asphalt paving, concrete paving, make entryways beautiful so that when people drive into a facility, they know that a company cares about how it looks.”

Black Diamond has been in existence for over 50 years. I asked Deb what has happened at their company in the past few years as a result of the economy. She related, “We’ve had to get our ducks in a row. We’ve had to look after some of the important things like our debt, and watch our expenses, and manage the way we look at people, and our customers – treat them very carefully. And, we’ve also had to change our markets a little bit in order to succeed.”

After touring Deb’s beautiful new facility in Milwaukee, I spoke with her about the importance of attitude. I asked her how much that affected her in recent years and how did she get the right attitude.

She said, “Without a positive attitude, we can’t make it work. All of our people have the same idea: that we must succeed. And, it’s how we approach people and how we behave with others that will make that happen. So, a positive attitude, and being solution-focused, is what we’re all about.”

In order to prosper during these challenging times, Deb told me that Black Diamond looked at some of their different markets and decided that they would move more into some that are prospering, that are looking for new parking lots and roadways, which is what they provide people. And they also looked at doing a few new services.

As far as any advice Deb might have for anyone running a small business and struggling with the economy, she told me: “I think the most valuable thing one can do is go back to your core. Understand what it is that you do and do best. And widen your horizon enough to understand that you don’t have to keep those blinders on. You can do more. But you do it all using the same core values that you started your business with.”

I believe that Deb is paving a positive direction for all of us with her positive attitude.

You are special. You are unique. You are destined for greatness. I see it in you. You are a Champion. Have a powerful day!

After doing a recent seminar in Appleton, Wisconsin, I had the opportunity to interview the CEO of another company that is succeeding in the current economy.

I spoke with Gary Bezella, the President of Cross & Oberlie (promotesigns.com). Gary’s company is a screen printer. They print promotional signs as well as political signs.

Cross & Oberlie has been in existence for 25 years and continues to be successful in the current economy.

I asked Gary why he thought they have prospered during these times. He said, “I think we’re successful because we service the customer. We provide printed signs on time, with high quality, and competitive prices. We deliver on what we promise.

When I asked Gary if Cross and Oberlie makes an effort to make every product the best that it can be, he related: “We do. We’re very cognizant of the customer and what they need and we service to their requirements.”

I asked him if, no matter what the economy is currently doing, there is still business out there. Gary said, “I think there is. We’ve been able to come through this recession very well.”

For anyone looking for ideas to promote their business, Gary urges people to go to the Cross and Oberlie web site: Promotesigns.com. The company uses the Internet extensively to generate business.

I believe that Gary is giving us a very positive sign of the times. During challenging times, successful companies are constantly aware of their customer’s needs, produce high quality products at competitive prices, and they constantly promote.

You are unique. You are special. You are destined for greatness. Have a powerful day!

What Can We Learn from Gabriel’s Angels

Before doing a recent seminar in Phoenix, I had the opportunity to interview the CEO of another company that is succeeding in the current economy.

I spoke with Pam Gaber, the enthusiastic CEO of Gabriel’s Angels (gabrielsangels.org). This is an Arizona-based charity that provides healing pet therapy to abused, neglected and at-risk youth.

“The whole concept,” Pam told me, “is the loving bond between children and animals. It allows these kids to open up and they can begin the healing process.”

Pam started Gabriel’s Angels 10 years ago with Gabriel, their founding dog, whom they unfortunately lost in May to cancer. According to Pam, the organization is very motivated to heal children that are in Arizona.

Pam and I discussed the fact that many companies are struggling in the current economy, especially non-profits. I asked her why Gabriel’s Angels is still in existence and why they are successful.

She said, “I’ve always laughed at the term ‘non-profit’ in some ways because we should be profitable. If someone gives us a dollar, and we only spend 60 cents, then what we’ve done is we’ve built reserves. That’s what has helped us get through this economy.

Passion will get you a long way. But you’ve got to learn how to fund raise, have a sound fund development strategy, and put systems into your business. If you don’t have systems, then every time you do something, it’s like the first time you’ve ever done it.”

I noticed that Pam obviously had a fabulous attitude and I asked her about that. “I wake up every day,” she related, “and I say to myself I’m going to make it a great day. That’s the power of the attitude, the mind, and the power to make our day great.”

I teach across the country that people should not hope or wish but, like Pam, people should expect something good and then they should make it happen. Pam said that we should look at the outcome, expect what that outcome is, and get out there with the attitude that makes it happen.

Concerning the terms “recession” or “depression”, Pam told me, “I said to my staff earlier this year ‘We’re not participating in any recession’. Yes, there’ll be a new normal. The other difference I have in my arena is, in a down economy, my demand goes up.

I have to be able to serve these kids. What an injustice it would be for me to downsize, and let my people go, when I’ve got an increased demand from mental health services for children here in Arizona.”

So, if you and I have been barking up the wrong tree concerning the economy, I’m sure Pam would agree with me that it’s time for us to look ahead and see what’s possible and then make some success happen in our lives.

How to Develop Your Great Future

CLICK HERE TO “TAKE ME TO THE NEXT LEVEL”

After doing a recent seminar in Columbia, South Carolina, I had the opportunity to interview the CEO of another company that is succeeding in the current economy.

I spoke with Ben Arnold, the President of Arnold Companies (arnoldfamilycorp.com). They are commercial real estate developers and a construction company. Ben had started the property management portion of the company in 1994 and Arnold Construction in 1995.

Before forming his companies, Ben’s family had a base of some small properties in the early 90′s. From that, they branched out to multi-family units, office, and industrial buildings. The combined companies now have nearly 50 employees.

Like many companies, the Arnold Companies have gone through some challenges with the economy in the past few years. As Ben told me, “We’ve had some struggles with existing tenants moving out of buildings. We’ve had to re-negotiate some leases like a lot of other landlords around the country.

But, we’ve been able to be flexible, to work with out tenants, and to treat them as if we’re partners – not just landlord versus tenants.”

I asked Ben what he did, in recent years, to keep his attitude positive. He stated, “It was a number of things. I surrounded myself with good people. I also kept my body in shape and I looked into the future. We worked at predicting the cycle and where we are in the cycle. And, knowing that a better day is coming.”

I learned that, at the Arnold Companies, they do some innovative things when it comes to renovating apartment buildings. “Our niche,” related Ben, “is renovating low-income housing in rural communities. What makes us different is that we do it while the tenants are living in the units.

They leave in the morning and they come back at night and we’ve replaced the kitchen cabinets, appliances, and vinyl. And, if we have to carpet and paint, we do that on another day.

It’s really a methodology of moving people around, organizing what they do, and our clients maintain their cash flow while we’re doing the work.”

When I asked Ben for his advice for anyone who is struggling with the current economy, he said, “Don’t lose hope. Surround yourself with good people. And, recognizing opportunities is the key to success. Opportunities go by every day and, if you’re focusing on the negative, or dwelling on what’s going on right this second, you’re missing the opportunities right in front of you.”

Thus, the secret to Ben’s success is that he’s looking forward rather than backwards. I think that’s a very important point for all of us to keep in mind as we develop our own futures.

A Forward-Looking Affirmation
I look forward toward great opportunities.

Giving Your Success a Lift

After doing a recent seminar in Columbia, South Carolina, I had the opportunity to interview the CEO of another company that is succeeding in the current economy.
I spoke with Buddy Smith, the CEO of CMH Services (www.cmhservices.net). They supply companies with a variety of fork lifts.

The company was founded in 1968. For 42 years CMH has been a dealership that primarily represents gas and electric forklifts. They sell to commercial and industrial businesses, distribution warehouses, and manufacturing plants.

Although the company is doing very well now, it wasn’t that way in the past few years as CMH struggled with the economy.

Buddy told me that, “Beginning in late 2008, and all through 2009, we saw a tremendous drop in demand for our services, as most of the country did. It was quite a tough time for 24 months or so.”

When I asked Buddy what he did to move his company out of that challenging time, he said, “We did a lot of things. But, mostly what we did is we tried to stick real close to our numbers. We tried to stay ahead of this thing by forecasting where we thought our sales would be. We made some assumptions in terms of the drops in sales and we acted accordingly. That meant managing our expenses very aggressively.”

When I noted to Buddy that I see many people getting in trouble when they don’t lower expenses during challenging times, he related: “I think sometimes people are just caught off guard and it becomes too late to do anything when you get in a panic mode. We didn’t want to do that. We saw this thing coming early. We began cutting non-essential expenses just as quickly as we could and, fortunately, we were able to stay ahead of it. In fact, we made more money in 09 than we did in 08.”

When I walked around the CMH plant I felt a very special spirit among the employees. I asked Buddy about the secret to his success. He said, “You want to get the right people on your team and put them in the right spots. That’s something I’ve worked really hard at doing during the last four or five years. We just have an excellent team.”

Buddy told me that one of the things he did not want to do during this recession was cut people because he felt that, at some point, the economy was going to come back and he wanted his team to be in place and be able to perform when business did come back.

When I asked how much his positive attitude plays in helping his employees attitudes, Buddy related, “I think my positive attitude helps and my negative attitude hurts. So, I have to be careful. I’m trying to lead with confidence. I’m trying to portray a positive attitude even when things aren’t going well because I know I’m being watched pretty closely.”

If you’re on the East Coast and you need a lift for your business, this would be it.
You are special. You are unique. You are destined for greatness. Have a powerful day!

Ingredients for Your Success

After doing a recent seminar in Atchison, Kansas, I had the opportunity to interview the CEO of another company that is succeeding in the current economy.
I spoke with Tim Newkirk, CEO of MGP Ingredients (http://mgpingredients.com/). He related that MGP produces various types of ingredients for consumer packaged goods companies. It also produces beverage and industrial alcohol.
The company was founded in 1941 and has had it’s headquarters in Atchison, Kansas, for almost 70 years.
Although the company is doing well now, their path to success has not always been smooth. As Tim told me, “Our history has been about change and about reacting to what the exterior world throws at us.”
A couple of years ago the company really hit some hard times. As Tim related, “It was about us still hanging on to some products and some processes from the past and not focusing on the things that were really making money.”
The company at that time almost went broke. When I asked Tim what they did to turn things around, he stated, “It was really pretty straight-forward. We just focused on the things that were making money. And the things that weren’t, we stopped doing them.”
As a result of that effort, what happened at MGP was amazing. “We’ve paid down almost $50 million in debt in the last 18 months,” Tim said, “and we are back to being profitable.”
When I asked Tim about how he kept his attitude going in the right direction during that challenging time, he said: “We had a vision of where we wanted to be and just refused to quit.”
That attitude reminded me of what Napoleon Hill said in his best-selling book “Think and Grow Rich”: Definiteness of Purpose.
What if all of us exhibited the same “definiteness of purpose” that Tim and his management team showed at MGP Ingredients in turning that company around?
Hill instructed readers to write down exactly what you want, write down a specific plan to achieve it, get a picture of the reward, write an affirmation as if the goal is achieved, then read that affirmation the first thing each morning and the last thing each night.
I believe that that formula is the right ingredient to incredible success.

How Jason Became a Golden Success

I believe that small businesses are the backbone of America. And, no matter what the news media is telling us about the state of the economy, there are many small businesses that are thriving.

I recently met the CEO of a very successful Orange County, California, Internet Marketing Company (http://wwww.goldencomm.com). His name is Jason Lavin (http://www.goldencomm.com/company/default.aspx) and his company is Golden Communications (http://www.goldencomm.com)
At Golden they build web sites, do Internet marketing, search engine optimization, search engine marketing, a lot of social networking, e-commerce, and web site programming.

As Jason told me, Golden does anything that helps their clients to leverage the Internet, leverage technology, and leverage social networking. Companies hire Golden Communications to get them on the right track with those tools.

I asked Jason why his company has become so successful in a business that could be very complex for many people. He related that he has worked very hard to hire a lot of the right people that understand the technology.

Golden has 30 employees and about half of them are in their 20′s. “That really helps,” says Jason, “because they really have their finger on the pulse of the technology. The other half, who are a little older, have a good understanding of the business thrust behind how people should be leveraging these tools.”

Jason related that one of the reasons why Golden has been so successful is that they have the ability to talk to business owners and they can teach them what other companies are doing to leverage the tools of the Internet. They show them examples of things they should be doing and then they help them implement.

Jason told me that Golden has 24-hour cadence, which means they have 20 employees in their Costa Mesa headquarters, two people on the East Coast, and half a dozen employees overseas.

“In my business,” Jason related, “people want immediate assistance. So our employees around the world are available on a 24-hour basis.” It is that kind of dedication and responsiveness that has drawn over 400 clients to Golden Communications in the past 14 years.

In my observations of Jason and his upbeat, creative staff, I noticed that he creates a very positive and encouraging atmosphere at his company.

With the right attitude, and hard work, Jason has created his own golden opportunity at Golden Communications.

Are We Prisoners of Our Own Minds

By Boaz · Comments (0)

CLICK HERE TO “TAKE ME TO THE NEXT LEVEL”

On a recent business trip to San Francisco, I stopped by the Golden Gate Bridge. Not far from the overlook where I stood, in the middle of the harbor, was the famed prison, Alcatraz.

There is something in life that is a lesson from these two iconic symbols that are world-renowned: The Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz.

Do you realize that the only thing we have total control over is our brain? We cannot control the government. We cannot control the weather. As much as we’d like to, we cannot control the economy.

But the only thing we have total control over is our brain.

So, let’s pretend that there is a golden gate to our brain. And, if we don’t watch out for what comes into our brains, then all of us, sooner or later, can literally become mental prisoners in our own minds.

This is due to negative thinking; due to watching the news too much; due to reading the newspaper; buying into all kinds of things that people are saying about the direction of our economy.

So, may I suggest that you post yourself as a mental guard at the golden gate of your brain. And make sure you do not allow mental negative thoughts; that you don’t allow the news media to guide you. That you don’t become a prisoner of your own thoughts.

Because, that in itself can sometimes be worse than serving time in a real prison. At least, then, some people eventually get out.

May I suggest a positive affirmation: I guard the golden gate of my mind.

You are special. You are unique. You are destined for greatness. I see it in you – you are a Champion! Have a powerful day.
