The other day I visited the entrance to Newport Harbor in Newport Beach, California.

This is a beautiful harbor, where some of the most expensive yachts in the world are docked.

There is a lesson in that harbor, and in others around the world, including some of the ones I used to bring a boat into the Midwest years ago. There are speed restrictions in Newport Harbor.

You cannot just come out of the place where you dock your boat and suddenly take off at high speed before you get to the ocean.

You’ve got to abide by the speed limits of the harbor so that you don’t cause problems for other boats. You don’t “rock the boat” so to speak, until you get out to the ocean.

There is a lesson here in setting goals in life. Isn’t it the same lesson? Too often, when we set goals, whether it deals with our health, our weight, our finances, or our careers, we want to take off like a shotgun.

But, we’ve got to realize that, when it comes to setting goals, it’s really important to break down long-term goals, big goals, into shorter goals, small, short-term goals that we have to be patient with and take one step at a time until we get to the big goals.

It’s the same concept in Newport Harbor. You first have to come out at slow speed. And then, when you come to the ocean, at the end of the harbor, you can take off at a much faster speed.

So, may I suggest to you that, whatever goal you have wanted to set, and you’ve got the big picture, then break it down to something manageable. Break it down to pieces that are manageable, that you may take at a slower pace at first, until you pick up the pace and you’re able to accomplish much larger goals.

When it comes to setting sail for your future, may I suggest that you take some small steps first before you can go at a much faster pace. I believe that will help you create momentum.
