Before doing a recent seminar in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, I had the opportunity to interview the CEO of another company that is succeeding in the current economy.

I spoke with Deb Teglia, President of Black Diamond Group ( She told me that Black Diamond builds welcoming mats for people. She said, “We do asphalt paving, concrete paving, make entryways beautiful so that when people drive into a facility, they know that a company cares about how it looks.”

Black Diamond has been in existence for over 50 years. I asked Deb what has happened at their company in the past few years as a result of the economy. She related, “We’ve had to get our ducks in a row. We’ve had to look after some of the important things like our debt, and watch our expenses, and manage the way we look at people, and our customers – treat them very carefully. And, we’ve also had to change our markets a little bit in order to succeed.”

After touring Deb’s beautiful new facility in Milwaukee, I spoke with her about the importance of attitude. I asked her how much that affected her in recent years and how did she get the right attitude.

She said, “Without a positive attitude, we can’t make it work. All of our people have the same idea: that we must succeed. And, it’s how we approach people and how we behave with others that will make that happen. So, a positive attitude, and being solution-focused, is what we’re all about.”

In order to prosper during these challenging times, Deb told me that Black Diamond looked at some of their different markets and decided that they would move more into some that are prospering, that are looking for new parking lots and roadways, which is what they provide people. And they also looked at doing a few new services.

As far as any advice Deb might have for anyone running a small business and struggling with the economy, she told me: “I think the most valuable thing one can do is go back to your core. Understand what it is that you do and do best. And widen your horizon enough to understand that you don’t have to keep those blinders on. You can do more. But you do it all using the same core values that you started your business with.”

I believe that Deb is paving a positive direction for all of us with her positive attitude.

You are special. You are unique. You are destined for greatness. I see it in you. You are a Champion. Have a powerful day!
