Taking Control Of Your Power

Recently, when conducting a series of seminars in the Washington, D.C., area, I stopped by to see The White House.

It was in 1790 that President George Washington decided that the federal government would reside in the District of Columbia. He worked with the French architect Pierre L’Enfante to design the city and specifically to choose the site at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue for The White House, the President’s house.

The cornerstone was laid in 1792 and the first President to move into The White House was John Adams with his wife Abigail in the year 1800.

The White House symbolizes POWER all over the world. It symbolizes real POWER.

Too many people in this day and age, with financial challenges, health challenges, and so forth, feel like they have lost their power.

It is my feeling that power does not reside outside of us. It doesn’t matter what the government is doing, what the weather is doing, what the economy is doing, the real power resides in our mind – the 6 inches between our ears.

Do you realize that is the only thing we have total control over? Our thoughts. So, it’s not what happens. It’s how we react. That’s what my mother always told me: “It’s not what happens. It’s how we react. The choice is the reaction.”

May I suggest that you turn those thoughts inwardly and declare positive affirmations of the way you want to see the world. Chances are that you will declare and receive more of the good things that could be coming towards you.

I believe that declaring the following affirmation, the first thing every morning and the last thing each night, for at least 30 days, will begin to help most anyone to re-take their power.

You are special. You are unique. You are destined for greatness. I see it in you – You are a Champion! Have a powerful day!

Do You Have A Someday

Since words are previews of things to come, I got to thinking the other day about the importance of words.

I was sitting on the porch of my apartment in Newport Beach, California, and glancing out on some beautiful surroundings. There are so many trees in my complex that the greenery creates a unique level of peacefulness.

Sometimes there are no words to describe the peacefulness that I feel here.

And, speaking about words, there is one word that all of us use, and I’ve been as guilty as anyone in the past of using this one word too much, and it doesn’t really help us.

The one word I’m talking about is SOMEDAY. We use it too much.

In my apartment complex there is a beautiful hiking trail. “Someday I’ll go take a hike on that trail.”

A couple of buildings over there is a exercise room. “Someday I will go over there and exercise regularly.”

“Someday I’ll get a hold of my finances and I’ll pay in cash and I’ll save some money. Someday I’ll pay off my debts.”

In my office, there is a calendar. I checked and I did not see a day of the week on that calendar called “Someday.” There is Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. There is no “Someday.”

So, when we use the word “Someday,” the signal to the subconscious mind is that there is no commitment. Since there is no day of the week called “Someday,” there is no need for a commitment to a goal. Thus, there probably won’t be any achievement of an important goal.

May I suggest that we change from using the word “Someday” to using specific words like Today, This Week, This Month, and This Year.

So, instead of saying, “Someday I’ll take a hike down that trail in my complex,” how about “I’ll take a hike right after I finish writing this newsletter.”

And “Tomorrow morning, first thing, I’m going to go over to the exercise room in my complex and I’m going to exercise for 30 minutes on the treadmill.”

And “This week I will set a monthly budget that I will work toward so I can spend less than I earn.”

And “This month I will begin to pay off my debts.”

And “This year I will lose 20 pounds.”

The mind responds to specific words: Today, This Week, This Month, This Year. So, I encourage you, for things that you have wanted to change about you, to start using the words Today, This Week, This Month, This Year instead of Someday.

I believe that you’ll be amazed how much more productive you will be.

So, before I go off on my hike down the trail, which I’ve committed to you to do, let’s declare together that we no longer have a Someday on our calendar.

You are special. You are unique. You are destined for greatness. I see it in you – you are a Champion! Have a powerful day!

Remodeling Your Attitude

After a recent speaking engagement in Baltimore, and before flying back to the West Coast, I stopped by the beautiful harbor in that city.

One of the great attractions in the harbor is the U.S.S. Constellation, a great example of the tall ships of the past.

An amazing thing happened in Baltimore a few years ago. The entire harbor was remodeled into an incredible tourist attraction. There are many shops, theatres, and restaurants. The people of Baltimore did an incredible job of remodeling their waterfront.

I figure that all of us, at one time or another, including me, need to remodel our attitude.

When there are challenging times, as many people are having right now with the economy, it’s time to remodel one’s attitude.

I was brought up in a culture that, no matter what happens, no matter what difficulties you may have, you get yourself right back up and you find a way to get things moving. You remodel your attitude.

It’s not I hope or I wish. It’s I CAN.

So, my mother taught me: The glass is broken. The milk is spilled. I don’t want to have a pity party. If you do, you’re on your own. But, if you want to make plans to move ahead. If you want to find new ways to improve your situation, she said, I’m with you.

If you’re going through some challenging financial times right now, then may I suggest that you remodel your attitude. Realize that attitude is everything.

So, write an affirmation that you would say the first thing in the morning and the last thing at night. An affirmation that says, “I am a positive person. I have a great attitude. I see great things happening in my life. I see my financial situation improving dramatically.”

Say that the first thing every morning and the last thing every night. Watch what happens in about 30 days. Suddenly your mind will open up to new possibilities – “Well, maybe I can.”

That way you will look for opportunities and you will recognize them when they come. If all we do is go around saying things aren’t working for us, we will literally close our eyes to good things that will come to us.

So, isn’t it time that you remodeled your attitude like the people in Baltimore remodeled their harbor? You could sail into a wonderful new future.

You are special. You are unique. You are destined for greatness. I see it in you. You are a Champion!

What If a Hurricane Came Through Your Life

On a recent speaking trip to Galveston, Texas, I learned about the extent of damage that Hurricane Ike caused when it smashed into that community at 2:10 in the morning on September 13, 2008.

However, in the time since that tragedy, I saw on my visit the amazing progress that the residents of Galveston have made.

The people of southeastern Texas are resilient. They get things done. They stand up and take action. As I drove around town, I was truly amazed with the progress they had made since Hurricane Ike.

I found the town alive and breathing and a wonderful place to come and visit for a vacation.

So, the message here is about getting things done.

We all, at one time or another, have a hurricane either literally or figuratively come through our lives and then we just don’t know what to do.

Well, the champions just start with step one.

So, if a house like one of the many new ones I saw being built in Galveston was demolished in a hurricane, the first step to recovery would be to pick up a piece of wood and put it in the trash. The idea is to pick up the mess and clean up.

That’s the first step.

Some things in life are tension-relieving while others are goal-achieving. So, I found when I was in a difficult situation, that if I focused on those goals that were goal-achieving, I went much further and I was able to make great progress.

Great power is generated when we take action quickly on something that has to be done, something that is goal-achieving.

I believe you do exactly that when you’re faced with a storm.
