Turning On the Faucet to Your Great Future

I recently conducted a seminar for a great group of CEO’s and their spouses in Kohler, Wisconsin.

This community is located about 4 miles west of Sheboygan, close to Lake Michigan, about an hour north of Milwaukee and a couple of hours north of Chicago.

I stopped by the world headquarters of the Kohler Corporation. You probably know them. If you’ve stayed in any beautiful hotels, and turned on the faucets in the bathroom, they probably had the Kohler label.

In my remodeling work in the past I’ve used some of their beautiful products in beautiful bathrooms.

The reason I want to talk to you about the Kohler Corporation is that it has a wonderful and interesting history.

The company was founded in 1873 by John Michael Kohler. He was originally from Austria, where my father was from. It was in 1899 that he bought about 29 acres, west of Sheboygan, and that eventually became Kohler Village in 1912.

It is a beautiful community, beautifully laid out because of a couple of master plans. In 1917 the company had a 50-year master plan created for the area around the main plant in Kohler Village.

The plan showed how streets were to be laid out, what was to be built, how the village was to be developed over 50 years. And then again, in 1977, they created a second 50-year plan for the development of the area. No wonder it has turned out to be such a beautiful community.

The Kohler corporation now operates on 6 continents around the world, over 10,000 employees, with over a billion dollars a year in sales. There’s something in the two 50-year plans that they created for Kohler Village that is a message to all of us.

Why don’t we sit down and write out our long-range plan? Where do we want out life to be in 10, 20, or 30 years? Too often we think too close. What do we have to do today or tomorrow?

What if we laid out a long-range plan on paper and then backed it up and decided what needs to be done in the next year in order to move ahead with that long-range plan?

Written goals make all the difference in the world. Only 3% of the people in the world have written goals. And they are the ones who seem to accomplish the most in life.

So, if you want to turn on the faucet, so the speak, on a great future for yourself, why not write down your long-range plan. Divide it into short and intermediate goals and then focus on the short-term goals.

Before you know it, you’ll be amazed with what a great future you will have.

You are special. You are unique. You are destined for greatness. Have a powerful day!

Is It Water Under The Bridge For You

If you’ve been around for a while, you’ve probably heard of the Geneva Convention.

Well, I recently experienced my own version when I conducted a seminar for a nice group of people in Geneva, Illinois. I guess that was my version of the “Geneva Convention”.

Geneva, Illinois, is a lovely community about 40 miles west of Chicago. I was speaking at the beautiful Herrington Inn and Spa, right next to the Fox River.

As I stood on the balcony of my lovely room at the Herrington, I felt very peaceful watching the meandering Fox River going downstream right outside my room.

That beautiful sight was a great example of peace, something that too many people lack in their busy lives.

If you don’t have peace in your life, my aim is to help you get some.

So, the most important thing about having inner peace is to define, on paper, what is it that concerns you. Think about it, what are you worried about most of the time? What frustrates you?

Is it your health? Is it your finances? Is it a career? Is it a relationship?

The first, and most important point, is to define it on paper. “What am I concerned about the most? What upsets me the most?”

And then focus on one area that you can improve.

If it is your health, and you need to eat healthier, then start today. Start by taking a walk. If you lived in a beautiful community like Geneva, Illinois, maybe you’d take a walk along the river.

Maybe you need to just pay attention to what you’re eating and eat a little more carefully.

If it’s a relationship you need to improve or change, then do something about it.

If it is finances that’s causing you inner turmoil and not allowing you to have inner peace, then start paying in cash, pay off some debts, save some money, live a little below your means.

The important point is to do something about at least one area that’s frustrating you and to take small steps. Before you know it, those small steps add to bigger steps.

And there’s something else about the Fox River in Geneva that I want to talk to you about as a lesson. The Fox River continuously goes to move downstream. The bridge over the Fox River, which I saw from my hotel balcony, was a symbol in life because the water underneath it continues to go under the bridge.

So, if there are some things that you are resenting from your past, realize that those are water under the bridge. It is already gone. As I saw in the Fox River, there was no way to make it go backwards. It continued to move downstream. It’s water under the bridge.

So, whatever has not gone well in the past, just decide to let it go down the river and decide that in the future you will do things differently.

How You Can Get the Taste of Sweet Success

On a recent trip to do a seminar in Bend, Oregon, I learned why one local company there is continuing to have great success, no matter what the economy is doing.

The company is American Licorice and they seem to know how to get the taste of sweet success.

It was at their corporate headquarters in Bend that I interviewed Sue Jones. She is the company’s Director of Human Relations. Their licorice, in the famous large red jar, is sold nationwide along with many other sweet products.

She related that the company was founded in Chicago in 1914. Corporate headquarters was eventually moved to Bend. The company, with about 400 employees, has manufacturing facilities in Indiana and in California.

The Red Vines Licorice, in that distinctive red jar, is one of the company’s national brands. There’s also their tasty Sour Punch product and there’s a new product called Natural Vines, an all-natural licorice.

I asked Sue why the company has continued to be so successful, despite the current economy. Her answer was simple: “We’re really focusing on our consumer. We’re in the business of providing happy consumer experiences.”

She further related that the company had spent the past few years developing their business strategy, focusing on building up their consumer strategy, learning who their consumers are, and what they’re looking for from the company’s products.

This concept, of putting themselves in the customer’s shoes, has helped American Licorice to continue to succeed. That’s exactly what Dale Carnegie, in the book “How to Win Friends and Influence People”, suggested. He said, “Put yourself in the other persons shoes and look at things from their perspective.”

“We have a very passionate and loyal following,” related Sue, “and we’re actually in the process of doing a national drawing contest by our consumers. They really love our product.” Numerous drawings from that contest were up in the hallways of the company’s headquarters.

So, there you have it. It’s not a big secret as to why some businesses struggle while others prosper.

At American Licorice they’re constantly getting involved with the ultimate customer, wanting to make sure that they have a happy consumer experience.

What can you and I do today to put ourselves in other people’s shoes and look at things from their perspective.

Perhaps we, too, could get more of the taste of sweet success.
