Your Declaration of No Worry

While on a recent trip to Washington, D.C., where I did a series of seminars, I visited the Jefferson Memorial.

This amazing memorial is in honor of an amazing man who was instrumental in the birth of the United States of America.

Thomas Jefferson was well known for the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. He also sponsored the Lewis and Clark Expedition that found the Northwest Passage. He did some amazing things.

The reason I want to talk about Thomas Jefferson is the fact that he authored The Declaration of Independence. I think we each need to author our own Declaration of Independence.

Some of us, during these trying times, whether it be financial challenges or maybe there are health challenges, have become prone to worry – a little too much worry.

My feeling is that stress is the number one killer in this country. If we can get control of worry, I think that might help us a lot to be able to open our eyes to opportunities and to improve our situation.

Dale Carnegie wrote a wonderful book called “How to Stop Worrying and Start Living”. In it he said that we must live in day tight compartments.

Consider as if you were living in a room with a door behind you and one in front of you. The door behind you is to yesterday and it is locked permanently. The door ahead of you is to tomorrow and it does not open up until midnight tonight.

So, all we’ve got is today – this very room. And, if you’re worried about something, then write down what is the worst that could happen. Just write down what is the worst that could happen.

Then write down what you would do to improve on that if it did happen. Then you’ll realize that you’ve got a solution. Carnegie said that, by just writing it down and looking at it, that will help you to relax.

Again, he said to live in day tight compartments. The question is: “What can I do about it today?”

May I suggest that you now use Carnegie’s idea and declare your own independence from worry. I believe that the following affirmation, stated out loud the first thing every morning and the last thing each night, for at least 30 days, will help.

If you were totally confident about your life and your future, would you worry about anything?

Lincoln Stopped Criticizing

On a recent speaking trip to the Washington, D.C., area, I stopped by Ford’s Theatre.

That is where, on the night of April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth shot President Abraham Lincoln. The theatre is located about six blocks from The White House.

After the shooting they took Lincoln across the street to a cheap boardinghouse. As he lay dying in a second floor bedroom, Secretary of War Stanton said: “Here lies the most perfect ruler of men that the world has ever known.”

Was Lincoln’s life always that way? Not necessarily.

When he was growing up in Indiana, and then in Illinois, he criticized people. He criticized them to such an extent that, one day, he left a note on a countryside road criticizing a city official.

That official got so angry that he challenged Lincoln to a duel. And, if it wasn’t for their seconds stopping them in the last moment, one of our greatest Presidents could have died in a duel because of criticism.

So, my question to you and me is: What is criticism doing to our lives? Are we criticizing, condemning, and complaining? Maybe that’s one reason why we’re not as far as we want to be or not as happy as we want to be.

May I suggest to you, for one week, do not criticize, condemn, or complain. Let me repeat: Do not criticize, condemn, or complain. Do so for one week and just look for the good.

The 3 C’s – don’t criticize, condemn, or complain – are found in Chapter 1 of Dale Carnegie’s book: “How to Win Friends and Influence People”.

Lincoln learned the important lesson of not criticizing early on in his life and he turned out to be an amazing leader. Perhaps you and I should pay closer attention to that Presidential proclamation and see what it could do to improve our lives.

You are special. You are unique. You are destined for greatness. I see it in you. You are a Champion. Have a powerful day.

How You Can Get the Taste of Sweet Success

On a recent trip to do a seminar in Bend, Oregon, I learned why one local company there is continuing to have great success, no matter what the economy is doing.

The company is American Licorice and they seem to know how to get the taste of sweet success.

It was at their corporate headquarters in Bend that I interviewed Sue Jones. She is the company’s Director of Human Relations. Their licorice, in the famous large red jar, is sold nationwide along with many other sweet products.

She related that the company was founded in Chicago in 1914. Corporate headquarters was eventually moved to Bend. The company, with about 400 employees, has manufacturing facilities in Indiana and in California.

The Red Vines Licorice, in that distinctive red jar, is one of the company’s national brands. There’s also their tasty Sour Punch product and there’s a new product called Natural Vines, an all-natural licorice.

I asked Sue why the company has continued to be so successful, despite the current economy. Her answer was simple: “We’re really focusing on our consumer. We’re in the business of providing happy consumer experiences.”

She further related that the company had spent the past few years developing their business strategy, focusing on building up their consumer strategy, learning who their consumers are, and what they’re looking for from the company’s products.

This concept, of putting themselves in the customer’s shoes, has helped American Licorice to continue to succeed. That’s exactly what Dale Carnegie, in the book “How to Win Friends and Influence People”, suggested. He said, “Put yourself in the other persons shoes and look at things from their perspective.”

“We have a very passionate and loyal following,” related Sue, “and we’re actually in the process of doing a national drawing contest by our consumers. They really love our product.” Numerous drawings from that contest were up in the hallways of the company’s headquarters.

So, there you have it. It’s not a big secret as to why some businesses struggle while others prosper.

At American Licorice they’re constantly getting involved with the ultimate customer, wanting to make sure that they have a happy consumer experience.

What can you and I do today to put ourselves in other people’s shoes and look at things from their perspective.

Perhaps we, too, could get more of the taste of sweet success.

Emilio – Champion of All Smiles – Learn To Smile More (Episode #400)

By Boaz · Comments (0)
Friday, February 19th, 2010

In the Dale Carnegie book, “How to Win Friends and Influence People”, there is a chapter that deals with smiles.

Carnegie shares a couple of Chinese proverbs that are very powerful: “A person without a smiling face should not open a shop” and “Have a smile that would bring a good price in the marketplace.”

He further states that it takes fewer muscles to smile than it does to frown.

We should all realize that a smile is something wonderful we can give to others. And, in many instances, it is something that helps other people feel better.

Whether we smile or frown, we’re subconsciously making that decision every day.

I know what some people might say: “Boaz, you don’t know the problems I’ve got. I don’t have much to smile about.” That may be so. However, often we can find someone else who has it worse than we do.

Whenever I visit a certain Ralphs grocery store in Southern California, I am often reminded of the value of a smile.

One of their employees is named Emilio. He is obviously not in management at that store. In fact, whenever I see him, he is usually mopping the floors and cleaning up so shoppers can have a nicer experience.

I would estimate that Emilio is probably in his early 60′s and I would guess that he doesn’t speak much English. My guess is that he came from Mexico at some point in the past.

The only words I’ve ever heard him say, whenever I see him at the store, is: “Hello, Mister!”

But he delivers those words in the most incredibly sincere, genuine, and enthusiastic way I’ve ever seen. And then there’s that warm, huge smile.

He does all of this the same way – every time I see him. And every time I see him, he makes me feel special and very nice.

He doesn’t have to do this and I would guess that he does it to other shoppers.

So, here is an example of a man who isn’t looking to gain anything by being very friendly and sharing a big smile. He probably doesn’t make a lot of money. However, I believe he is rich in spirit.

Emilio is only about 5’2″ in height. But, in my book, he is very tall in stature.

Today I’m going to make a concerted effort to share a big, genuine smile with more people. I think a lot of people are shopping these days for a nice feeling from someone else. I’m going to be that someone else.

How about you?

Why don’t we all, like Emilio, become Champions of all Smiles?
