My Journey to Jerusalem

The other day, when I was somewhere on the East Coast, about to do a speaking engagement, I thought about setting goals. What if one of my goals – whether I’m a history buff, or a very religious person – what if one of my goals was to visit Jerusalem.

Let’s say that was one of my goals. And let’s say that I could just snap my fingers and suddenly be there? That’s exactly what I did that morning, just to see what might happen.

Shortly thereafter I found myself in Jerusalem. But, wait a minute. I was born in Israel. The Jerusalem I found myself in that day didn’t look like the Jerusalem I was used to.

The Jerusalem I was used to had a lot of historical and religious sites. Many of the buildings in the city were built out of the golden stone that is found in the nearby quarries. That’s what the real Jerusalem in Israel looks like. I was born there. I know.

But where was I? Wait a minute. I found myself in Jerusalem, Rhode Island. A beautiful fishing village in the southern edge of the state named Jerusalem.

Now what was wrong with my goal that day? I said I wanted to go to Jerusalem. But I wasn’t specific enough. I didn’t say which one. I didn’t realize that there was more than one. But there are.

Isn’t this a lesson about life? We set goals but we’re not specific. People say, “I want to be rich. I want to have a nice home.” They don’t write down specific details about the goal and then they get whatever the universe throws at them.

So, if you have a goal, write it down in specific details and you could end up at the right location as opposed to the wrong one. I did get to Jerusalem that day, but not the one I was looking for.

I want to make sure you get to the one you’re looking for.

I hope to see you Wednesday morning on Lifetime Television on The Balancing Act, 7-8 a.m. Easter and Pacific time. For speaking events, I can be reached at 619-723-3007.

You are special. You are unique. You are destined for greatness. You are a Champion!

Adjusting Your Course

On a recent trip to St. Louis, Missouri, for a seminar, I stopped by the famous Gateway Arch, the symbol of the expansion of the United States to the West.

It was completed in 1965 at a cost of $13 million. This monument is in commemoration of Thomas Jefferson and the great deeds that he did with the Louisiana Purchase and expanding the United States to the west coast.

It was not far from the Gateway Arch that, in 1804, the Lewis and Clark Expedition took off.

The Gateway Arch is the tallest of our national monuments in the United States. It is 608 feet tall and 608 feet wide at the base.

There is a tramway system inside the arch that takes over a million people a year up to the top to observe the entire area.

There is something unique about the tramway in the Gateway Arch. Since the arch curves, that tramway does not go straight up. In order to keep the passenger cars level as they go up the curved arch, there are many adjustments along the tramway.

Isn’t that a lesson in life?

Many times, life for us is not a straight line. Life sometimes throws us a curve. And, if we don’t learn to adjust as we go, if we don’t learn to take those difficult moments a little easier, life is going to be really tough for us.

So, may I suggest for you, if you have a difficult time adjusting to the challenges of the economy, of your health, of the weather, or whatever, that you realize that you can adjust easily.

May I suggest an affirmation that helps us deal better with the curves of life: I adjust easily to the curves that I see in life.

It’s not what happens. It’s how we react. Thus, it’s all about our attitude toward challenges that makes the big difference.

By adjusting our attitude, I believe that we will be able to move up to the top a little smoother.

You are special. You are unique. You are destined in greatness. I see it in you – you are a Champion. Have a powerful day!

How Do You Focus A Kayak

The last time I experienced being a kayak was in Israel, on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, when I was 8 years old.

Louise, a good friend of mine who lives right on Newport Harbor, in Newport Beach, California, re-introduced me recently to the great fun of kayaking.

There is a lesson about how one should row a kayak because it correlates to us setting goals in life.

When Louise and I took her two kayaks across Newport Harbor, she told me the following: “Kayaking is like life. You need a strong core. You need your belly button pointed toward the front of the kayak. That way you stay on balance all the time. Because, if you don’t, and you turn, it’s a fast lesson. You’re in the water. You’re wet.”

Isn’t that the same thing about life. When people take their eye off the goal, they can suddenly tip over and figuratively they can go under water.

Louise has been kayaking a long time and, since she keeps her belly button aimed toward the front of the kayak, she keeps going and she does it safely.

She has never fallen into Newport Harbor. She stated: “If you fall into Newport Harbor, the seals come after you.”

Again, just like life, there are sometimes figurative sharks that can come after us if we fall in the water.

So, this message is all about you setting goals and identifying exactly what you want.

During the current economic challenges, too many people are concerned about the “HOW”. If you’ve been a reader of this column for any length of time, you realize that I want you to focus on the “WHY” – a reward – a reason for you to do better.

If it’s a weekend trip away, or whatever you want to reward yourself with when you go to the next level, get a picture of it. Look at it the first thing every morning and the last thing every night.

That’s figuratively like you having your belly button pointed toward the front of the kayak. If you don’t, you could topple over. And, whenever you have a difficult moment, I would suggest that you get that picture out and just look at it. Refocus. “That’s why I’m working hard.”

I want you to achieve greatness. It’s not rocket science. You just simply have to identify something you can get excited about, get a picture of it, and look at it every day.

Don’t worry about the HOW. When the WHY is big enough, the HOW doesn’t matter.

You are special. You are unique. You are destined for greatness. Keep your belly button pointed forward and you’ll achieve great things.

Have a powerful week!

Response has been terrific to my new daily CD for children: The “30 Day Can Do Program for Kids.”

This is a great self-image-building program for children 4 to 12 years of age. Each of the 2-minute daily messages is uplifting, encouraging, and the results are very positive.

As a bonus to the CD, you will get the “Can Do Workbook”, a great e-book supplementary teaching tool to the audio messages.

The “Can Do Program for Kids” CD is available, with the bonus e-book, for just $29, at the Boaz Power Store on my web site: Boazpower.com.

How to See Your Goals Clearly and Solve Problems

Sometimes, when we are surrounded by challenges, it seems very difficult to see a way out. It’s as if we’re surrounded by heavy fog and we don’t know which way to go.

This concept was brought home in a wonderful story that Peter, a subscriber to this program, shared with me in a recent e-mail. I’ll let him tell you what happened…
“Thanks for your excellent piece on changing your perspective. It reminds me that I learned the same lesson as a youngster…

Many years ago I took a long sailing trip with some of my sailing buddies. It was a hardy sort of trip starting in Labrador, sailing around icebergs and finishing up the St. Lawrence Valley north west of Quebec City.

We had a lot of adventure in this trip and those stories could fill a few more emails, but it is the last day of the trip that fits with the theme of perspectives.

On the last morning of the trip, my best friend and I were alone on the boat as the others had disembarked at a port more convenient for land connections than the port where we were to leave the boat.

That morning we were in a thick fog in a part of the St. Lawrence that is full of small islands and shoals and is also in the shipping channel.

GPS hadn’t been invented and we didn’t have any electronic navigation equipment on the boat except for a depth sounder. We were doing our navigation the old way. Well, we got disoriented in the fog and we started to panic. We could hear fog horns and sea gulls. Both warnings of approaching hazards.

Fog horns meant a big cargo ship or a land obstruction and sea gulls meant the shore or beach. The depth sounder was all over the map because of the difficult water we were in.

We had changed direction so many times in panic that we had no idea where we were on the charts. We were at a loss until my friend realized that if he climbed the mast, he might get above the fog and have a clear view of our location.

Well, that was the solution. From high up on the mast my friend could see exactly where to go next and we both learned an important lesson on perspective.”

Isn’t life sometimes exactly like Peter’s dilemma in that boat? Sometimes we just need to get a different view of our circumstances.

Sometimes we just need to focus on doing one productive thing without trying to solve a number of problems all at one time.

One question that has helped me greatly in the past, when I wasn’t sure what to do about a problem, is as follows:

“What is the most productive thing I should be doing right now?”

Then, go do that one thing. When done, ask yourself the same question again and do something else that is productive.

Before you know it, you may find yourself at the top of the mast and things might look a whole lot clearer.
