Bridging Your Goals

The other day, when I was conducting a series of seminars in Connecticut, I took a detour off the main highway to find the Comstock Bridge.

Located near Colchester, Connecticut, this is one of the few remaining covered bridges in the Northeastern part of the United States.

Built in 1873, the Comstock Bridge spans the Salomon River, just north of Route 16. It served travelers on the main road between Colchester and Middletown for nearly sixty years, until a new concrete bridge was built downstream in 1932.

The Comstock Bridge was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

As I stood by that wonderful bridge I came to realize that bridges can symbolize our journey through life. They can exemplify our goals. Where we are is one side of the bridge and, where we want to go, can be the other side.

Most people don’t achieve what they want in life because they’re spending too much time standing on one side of the bridge. They think. They analyze. “It’s a long way across this bridge,” they ponder. “I’ve got a big goal, but it could be tough to get to the other side,” they further analyze.

The important thing about any goal is to break it down to manageable and believable pieces. Too many people set goals that are too big, mentally building a long span to “bridge” the gap. Thus, they remain on one side of the bridge, literally frozen in their tracks.

It’s fine to set big goals, to think BIG. However, if we don’t break those goals down to believable steps, we’re never going to get across that bridge.

So, let’s discuss how we can break down a goal and thus get across that bridge to where we want to be.

Let’s say that one of my goals is to lose some weight. For the sake of this discussion, let’s say that I need to lose 40 pounds. And let’s say that we’re talking about this on the first day of a new month.

You ask me, “Boaz, can you see yourself losing 40 pounds this month?” I say, “No way!” You ask, “How about 30?” I say, “Nope”. You ask, “What about 20, 10, or 5 pounds?” I say, “Anybody can lose 5 pounds!”
That’s my goal.

What I see is what I’ll get. Too many people set goals that are too high, they don’t see themselves accomplishing those goals, and thus they don’t take the first step to cross that bridge.

Thus, since I agreed that anyone could lose 5 pounds, my affirmation for the month would read like this: “It’s __(the date at the end of the month)__. This month I lost at least 5 pounds and I’m excited.” What we have here is a DATE, a GOAL, and an EMOTION.

I would then read that affirmation the first thing each morning and the last thing each night – the two times my subconscious mind is most open to suggestion.

It’s amazing what will happen by the end of the month. My subconscious mind will help me achieve that goal. What if I lost 5 1/2 pounds by the end of the month? I would look like a bigger champion then I thought. The odds are that I could set a similar goal for next month and accomplish that one too.

Taking small believable steps, one at a time, can get any of us across that bridge to the other side. Let’s not let any more water under our bridge without achieving some goals that are important in our lives.

Notes from a Relationship Expert

Now that I do a weekly television show on the Internet (something you can also do if you wish to promote your company or a personal passion), it gives me an opportunity to interview special people who have done special things.

The other day I got to spend some time on camera with a special friend who also happens to be a world-class relationship expert. Her name is Ana Weber and she resides in Irvine, California.

Ana is one of those rare human beings who exudes enthusiasm, a glittering smile, and is genuinely interested in other people.

Born in Romania, Ana wanted to make movies when she was growing up. She eventually immigrated to the United States in 1974.

When working as an HR manager for a company many years ago, Ana noticed that attitudes of workers were more negative on Mondays and Fridays.

She did some research and discovered that in a manufacturing assembly line, Monday was a bad day for productivity. She decided to call Monday “The Fun Day” instead of “The Blues Day”. Ana created fun meetings on Monday mornings and productivity increased.

After going through some challenges in her personal life, she went back to school and got another degree in behavior and human relations. That’s when she decided to coach people in the areas of letting go, change, and how to introduce goals into our reality.

Ana related to me that there are five facets to personal relationships. In the beginning, everything is very exciting. People pursue each other and they have fun. Then people get engaged in the relationship, they maintain the relationship and understand the value.

Ana further states that, unfortunately, sometimes relationships have to end. She says that its important to continue pursuing a relationship even though people are engaged in the relationship.

Having a regular weekly “date night” is something Ana feels is very important in continuing to pursue the relationship. “Enjoy the process and show enthusiasm for the relationship,” states Ana. She suggests that couples should go for walks in the park or go to a movie together.

Ana says that people need to really be in the moment for each other and that they need to make appointments with each other to spend quality time together. They should also show genuine interest in each other.

You can learn more about Ana’s work on her web site: AnaTheRelationshipExpert.com. She has written a number of books including a time-management book called “Your 48 Hour Day”. It increases the productivity of time.
Another book by Ana is “The Circle of Success”. The is a blueprint for life using the three ingredients of energy, time and money.

If you have children, and would like for them to have certain positive messages that you give them reinforced on a regular basis, you may want to consider getting my “30 Day Can Do Program for Kids” CD. It will help children become more confident, more caring, more respectful, and more successful.

The daily topics include: Being a good student, being a good sport, the value of reading, setting goals, getting things done, confidence, and determination.

This is recommended for children 4 to 12. As a bonus to the CD, you will be e-mailed the “Can Do Workbook”, a great e-book supplementary teaching tool to the audio messages.
