Lincoln Stopped Criticizing

On a recent speaking trip to the Washington, D.C., area, I stopped by Ford’s Theatre.

That is where, on the night of April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth shot President Abraham Lincoln. The theatre is located about six blocks from The White House.

After the shooting they took Lincoln across the street to a cheap boardinghouse. As he lay dying in a second floor bedroom, Secretary of War Stanton said: “Here lies the most perfect ruler of men that the world has ever known.”

Was Lincoln’s life always that way? Not necessarily.

When he was growing up in Indiana, and then in Illinois, he criticized people. He criticized them to such an extent that, one day, he left a note on a countryside road criticizing a city official.

That official got so angry that he challenged Lincoln to a duel. And, if it wasn’t for their seconds stopping them in the last moment, one of our greatest Presidents could have died in a duel because of criticism.

So, my question to you and me is: What is criticism doing to our lives? Are we criticizing, condemning, and complaining? Maybe that’s one reason why we’re not as far as we want to be or not as happy as we want to be.

May I suggest to you, for one week, do not criticize, condemn, or complain. Let me repeat: Do not criticize, condemn, or complain. Do so for one week and just look for the good.

The 3 C’s – don’t criticize, condemn, or complain – are found in Chapter 1 of Dale Carnegie’s book: “How to Win Friends and Influence People”.

Lincoln learned the important lesson of not criticizing early on in his life and he turned out to be an amazing leader. Perhaps you and I should pay closer attention to that Presidential proclamation and see what it could do to improve our lives.

You are special. You are unique. You are destined for greatness. I see it in you. You are a Champion. Have a powerful day.

Are You Programming Yourself For Success

On a recent speaking trip to Rochester, New York, I had an opportunity to visit the George Eastman House. Yes, the George Eastman who created Kodak – the films, the cameras and so much more.

Just a few miles south of downtown Rochester is a beautiful house, where he lived, which has been turned into a museum.

The reason I’m talking about George Eastman is the following: I believe that, when he created his company, and developed certain unique processes for developing film, creating the Instamatic camera, and so forth, I believe he programmed his brain, his mind, for success.

And that’s why he achieved such worldwide acclaim.

But, too many people, and I’ve been as guilty of it in the past as anyone, are programming their minds for failure. Whenever we go around saying things that don’t help us, we’re programming our minds for failure.

Examples: “I can’t get any breaks. I can’t get my health to be in good shape. I can’t get ahead with money. I can’t get out of debt. I can’t start a business of my own.”

Those are all thoughts that go into the brain and program us for failure. Then, when we see any indication to prove one of those thoughts, we say, “Look, I told you that I never get any breaks.” And that is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

So, no matter where you are in life right now, no matter what your condition is with you health, your finances, or your relationships, you have the power to change those things for the better by starting to declare what you want and stopping to declare what you don’t want.

It’s like putting good software into your computer. You’re going to get good results. Bad software ends up in bad results.

If you think that you have been saying things to yourself that keep you from moving ahead, and thus programming your mind for failure, let’s turn those thoughts around.

It’s just a matter of turning certain thoughts around. If you want to get out of debt, just write an affirmation that says, “It’s easy for me to get out of debt.”

If you want to save money, “It’s easy for me to save money.” Want to create a great relationship? “I create great relationships in my life.” If it’s business, “I’m able to succeed in business.”

Just read those affirmations the first thing every morning and the last thing every night. Don’t analyze them. Just read them out loud. Give me at least 30 days of you programming your mind for success and I believe you’ll be amazed.

Incredible things happen when we program our minds in the right direction. And I think you’re going to be doing that right now. And, like George Eastman, I believe you’ll be amazed with what develops!

You are special. You are unique. You are destined for greatness. I see it in you. You are a Champion!

Since children are barraged by so much negative each day, wouldn’t it be valuable to give them a diet of positive thoughts? That’s what my new daily CD for children, The “30 Day Can Do Program for Kids,” does.

This is a great self-image-building program for children, 4 to 12 years of age. Each of the 2-minute daily messages is uplifting, encouraging, and the results are very positive.

As a bonus to the CD, you will get the “Can Do Workbook”, a great e-book supplementary teaching tool to the audio messages.

The “Can Do Program for Kids” CD is available, with the bonus e-book, for just $29, at the Boaz Power Store on my web site: Boazpower.com.

How to Have Amazing Customer Service

On a recent speaking trip to Dallas, I had a free afternoon.

I spent that time going back in history by driving to Ft. Worth and taking a trip down memory lane. My first stop was at an old house on Hemphill Street and then to a small one-story commercial building down the street.

It was at that old house, in 1972, that my then wife and I adopted our daughter, Reena from the Edna Gladney Home. We then came back in 1975 to adopt Adam. The old house was where the main Gladney office was and the one-story building was the small hospital where, in the past, the babies were born.

After reminiscing about those amazing moments so many years ago, I drove about 10 miles across Ft. Worth to the much-larger and very modern present-day Gladney facility. It is now called The Gladney Center for Adoption and is right across the street from a large hospital.

Gladney has been in existence for over 120 years. It was a tenacious woman named Edna Gladney who served as Superintendent of the then Texas Children’s Home and Aid Society for 33 years. In 1936 she was instrumental in getting the Texas legislature to remove the word “illegitimate” from birth records.

A movie was made in 1941 about Edna Gladney and The Home. It was called “Blossoms in the Dust” and starred Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon. To give you an idea of the scope of the modern-day Gladney story, they were adopting out about 300 babies a year in the early 1970′s.

Thus, as I mentioned, we adopted Reena when she was a week old from Gladney in 1972. Then, in 1975, we came back to adopt Adam.

Now we get to the main point of this message.

The kind folks at Gladney did something so special on that July day in 1975 that I believe can be an important lesson in making people feel important. And isn’t that the core of all great relationships.

My wife and I were brought into a beautifully-decorated room that was called “The Delivery Room”. A nurse then took Reena and the two of them went to that little hospital a couple blocks away to go get Adam.

Then, with the assistance of the nurse, Reena “delivered” her new baby brother to us in the “Delivery Room”.

Talk about brilliance. Talk about an amazing level of customer service.
Rather than a new sibling becoming a distraction, Reena took great pride in the fact that she got to see her new brother first and she brought him to us.

What can you and I do, in our everyday lives, to make other people feel important? If you run a company, what more can you do to make your employees and your customers feel important?

Writing “Thank You” notes to people is one way. Making phone calls of appreciation is another way. Calling family meetings or meetings at work where the only purpose is to tell everyone how much you appreciate them is another way.

I believe that we can all “deliver” some appreciation every day and thus make other people feel important.
