Why motivation is so important is a question that is often asked by many people. The majority of people don’t understand why a few people seem to be motivated all the time while many people aren’t the same. As a professional speaker, it took me a while to realize that I cannot motivate anyone in my audiences. The only way for me to truly motivate someone is to spend all day, every day, with them. I’ll need to hold their hand and guide them through every moment of the day. That’s just not feasible and has no lasting value.

All I can do is share good, proven ideas and see what happens. The people who are motivated will pick up some of those ideas and run with them. To the rest, my time with them will be soon forgotten.

Why motivation is so important? Without motivation, Columbus wouldn’t have sailed for the new world, Edison would not have invented the light bulb, Ford the car, the Wright Brothers the airplane. At the same time, without motivation, people wouldn’t go after a college degree, would not lose weight, and wouldn’t work to improve a relationship. They would not strive to become better with money and would not go after a bigger position at work. Thus, to achieve any level of success in life, we’ve got to realize that motivation is very important. If you want to achieve more in your life, and you’re not sure how to get motivated, here are 5 steps you can take.

1. WHY MOTIVATION IS SO IMPORTANT BECOMES APPARENT WITH A BLUEPRINT

Why is motivation so importantWhy motivation is so important? It’s like a blueprint for your future. In one of my careers, I was a carpenter and a builder, following my father’s work. When I was 13 or 14, we lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in a small house. My parents decided to add a bathroom, a den, and two bedrooms onto the house. My father didn’t just order a bunch of wood, have it dropped off in our backyard, and sit back, hoping that the extension onto the house would magically appear.

Nope. My father had blueprints drawn, with every detail, showing exactly what was about to be built. Without specific plans, showing every detail, that building project would have never become a reality. As I helped my father build that extension, we followed the blueprints to the letter. Thus, at the end, the project turned out great because we followed a specific, written plan.

How do most people go about their lives? With no specific, written goals. Thus, they wonder why life throws them curves. It’s like a boat with no rudder. It’s going to end up wherever the wind chooses. No matter how old you are, don’t waste your time on what could have been. The only thing we have is this moment, a moment that will be the past of 5 years from now.

Start your written plan NOW. There’s a wonderful saying, “Follow your dreams, they know the way.” Thus, write down what you want in your life 5 years from today. Where do you want to live? How do you want your family situation to look and where do you want to be in your career. If you need to improve your health or financial situation, write down where you want to be in 5 years. Then, break those goals down to what portions you need to accomplish in the next 12 months. Next, break those goals down to the steps necessary in the next 30 days. If you don’t believe some of those goals, lower them until you do believe. Now take action on those 30-day goals. Walt Disney said, “The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.”

Get pictures of your goals and post them where you can see them every day. Look at those pictures and envision yourself in them! Just the fact that you have formed a clear blueprint of your future, and are taking small, initial steps, will help motivate you.

2. FOR THINGS TO CHANGE, WE’VE GOT TO CHANGE

It’s true, for things to change, we’ve got to change. Thus, in order to get motivated, you may want to declare some positive affirmations that will help your mind believe that you could achieve your goals blueprint. Here are some affirmations that I would suggest you declare, out loud, the first thing each morning and the last thing each night while you look at your pictures.

Everything I touch prospers and succeeds. I create great relationships, improve my health regularly, am managing my money productively, and creating opportunities at work to move ahead. I’m excited about my goals and am taking steps each day to accomplish them. I have a great attitude every day!

3. TAKE CONTROL OF FEAR

They’re afraid they will fail, that they may look foolish to others. If this is your problem, we have to find a way to deal with it so you can be properly motivated to achieve a great future. As the sign says, “On the other side of fear is freedom!” Action, even small steps, in the right direction, is a great antidote to fear.

The saying goes, “Fear knocked at the door, faith answered, and no one was there.” Another saying: “Courage doesn’t mean you don’t get afraid. Courage means you don’t let fear stop you.” Much of what we worry about never happens. Thus, fear is a big waste of time. If you make an effort and fail, in most cases you can start again. Total failure is not making any effort.

If fear is a problem for you, I suggest you read the Dale Carnegie book “How to Stop Worrying and Start Living.” He suggests that we live in day-tight compartments, focus on only what we can do today that is productive. Even if it’s a small step. Carnegie said that, if you’re worried about something, write down what you are worried about. Then write down what is the worst that could happen. Next, write down an action plan of what you would do if the worst were to happen. In most cases, this process will get rid of the fear. In addition, your positive daily affirmations will help strengthen your belief in your dreams. Strong beliefs, in the right direction, are a great antidote to worry.

4. ATTITUDE IS A CHOICE

No matter which way we look at our future, a bad attitude will kill motivation. Every morning, when we each wake up, we make a subconscious choice as to our attitude. Most people, because it’s simply easier, will gravitate toward a negative attitude and look at what’s wrong with their lives. The people who work at positive motivation, make an effort to direct their daily attitude in the right direction. They realize that it isn’t easy, but they know that it’s very important!

Since reading builds character, the right books can help our attitude greatly. It’s better to read one or two books, over and over again, than to read a bunch of books one time only. Repetition is the mother of skill. I suggest two of the best attitude and goal-setting books ever written. They are “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie and “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill.

In order to stay motivated, I suggest reading one or two pages in each book every day. Then, when you get through reading them, read them again. Read each book at least 3 or 4 times during the next couple of years. And, if you get depressed about the progress with your goals, pick up either book and read a page. The people stories and the stories about achievements of some very successful people will motivate you.

5. CREATE A MASTERMIND GROUP

We are the total sum of the five people we spend the most time with on a regular basis. Thus, if your friends don’t have specific goals that are admirable, maybe you need to get some new friends. Look for goal-oriented people who care about their personal relationships, stay healthy, manage money productively, have a positive attitude, and are working on exciting goals for their future.

Napoleon Hill, in “Think and Grow Rich”, described what he called a “Mastermind Group.” He defined that as a group of good people, coming together in a spirit of harmony, to encourage each other to achieve their dreams. This group could be anywhere from three to eight or nine people. Get together on a regular basis, maybe every two weeks, or monthly, and report to each other your progress on your most important goals. Look for ways to help each other achieve your dreams. Hill describes in the book a mastermind group, a long time ago, that included people like Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone, and Alexander Graham Bell. They used to get together regularly, share ideas, and encourage each other.

There you have it. Motivation is very important if we want our lives to be better. Zig Ziglar, the famous speaker, said: “Of course motivation is not permanent. But then, neither is bathing; but it is something you should do on a regular basis.”

They pay in cash wherever possible and, if they want to buy something special, they often save for it rather than charging it. Realizing that credit card money is not really theirs, they use credit cards very sparingly and never carry balances from one month to another.

Having money in the bank, and no debts, gives us confidence and will bring more opportunities our way. Also, carry a 100 dollar bill! That will make you feel prosperous. Have it where you can see it regularly in your wallet or purse. Also, put some 20 dollar bills around the house. Cash is real to our minds. Checks and credit cards are like playing Monopoly. Whatever we focus on expands. Thus, we want cash all around you!

5 ways to make decisions quickly is a process that will take you to a whole new level of success. There’s a theory that leaders make decisions quickly and change their minds slowly. Most everyone else makes decisions slowly and they change their minds quickly. The first thing to realize is that most decisions are not life and death. And, yet, most people spend a lot of time making decisions that should have taken minutes to make. If you find yourself agonizing about decisions, here are some steps you can take to help you become a leader when it comes to decisions.

1. 5 WAYS TO MAKE DECISIONS QUICKLY BEGINS BY CONTROLLING WORRY

One of the negative effects of making decisions slowly is the emotional price that is paid. Not making decisions can often result in worry and anxiety. Worry takes the shape of thoughts in our minds that go in circles. As long as we allow that to happen, making decisions becomes very difficult. Thus, we can worry and put off making decisions. That can often lead us to loss. We can lose our health, important relationships, career opportunities, and more. Make decisions quickly by learning to control worry.

Dale Carnegie wrote a very productive book that has helped many people to overcome worry, and thus make better decisions, more quickly. It’s called “How to Stop Worrying and Start Living.” Carnegie’s theory was that we should live in “Day-Tight Compartments”. He said to think about each day being a room with two doors. One door represents yesterday and that door is locked permanently. The other door leads to tomorrow. That one doesn’t open until midnight. Until that point, we’re living in this “Day-Tight Compartment”. In other words, there was nothing that could be done about yesterday and we could do nothing about tomorrow, until midnight.

Then, concerning something we’re worried about, Carnegie suggests writing down a clear description of what is worrying us. Then write down what is the worst that could happen. The next step was to write down a clear plan of what you would do if the worst were to happen. This idea is a great way to clarify a situation, which can help us make decisions more quickly.

2. THE BENJAMIN FRANKLIN ROUTINE

He suggested getting a piece of paper and drawing a line across, about an inch from the top of the paper. Then he said to draw a line down the middle of the page. In the middle, at the top, write down the decision to be made. At the top left, write the word “PROS” and the word “CONS” at the top right. You’re about to let Ben help you make a decision more easily.

Write down all of the reasons you should consider in making this decision, both for and against. Since our emotions vary from day to day, it is best if you spend a few minutes every day for five days to do this. Be as clear as possible in your written reasons, on both sides of the page. Pretend as if, after five days, you were to give this paper to a stranger and they would make the decision for you. Thus, you would have to be very honest about the pros and cons.

This is another way to get thoughts out of our minds and onto paper. Decisions become easier when we see them defined clearly in writing and we look for reasons to go ahead and reasons not to proceed.

3. IDENTIFY THE 5 MOST IMPORTANT THINGS EACH DAY

If our days are not well organized, and we get pulled in various directions at any given moment, I believe that keeps us from making decisions quickly. Napoleon Hill, in the book “Think and Grow Rich”, tells the story about Andrew Carnegie and his building of the United States Steel Corporation many years ago. In 1901 he hired Charles Schwab to become President of the company. Schwab asked a business consultant named Ivy Lee to give him an idea that would make him and his management more organized and more productive.

Lee suggested that, at the end of each day, Schwab should write down the 5 most important and valuable things he needed to do the following day, in the order of their importance. Then, the next morning, he was to focus on item #1 until it was completed. If he was distracted, he was to come back to item #1 as soon as possible. When that was completed, he was to go to item #2. If all he completed in any given day were items 1 through 3, at least those were the most important things.

At the end of the day, he was to make a new list for the following day. If he’d completed the first three items, item #4 might become #1 the next day. He might have considered that something else was more important the next day. Either way, there was great focus at the beginning of each day.

I believe this process would help us stay focused on the most valuable things each day and limit our confusion. Being focused can only help in making better decisions because we have uncluttered our minds.

4. ASK FOR HELP

Making Decisions Quickly means asking experts.Whatever decisions we make, in most cases someone else has made a similar decision. I find that most people allow ego to get in the way and they don’t ask for help. When you need to make an important decision, look for someone who might be an expert in that field and ask them for advice. We honor people when we ask their help and seek their advice. Let someone else feel good by helping you with the decision.

Check in your community to see who is an expert in the area for which you need advice with your decision. Perhaps identify more than one person. What if you were to send a note to three influential people and ask them all for advice with your decision? Give them the facts that deal with the situation and your options to take action. This can clarify your situation and you’ll be getting the benefit of experience from an expert. This would be advice that is coming from a non-partial third party who’ll be able to be more objective about your situation.

I was born in Israel. My family immigrated to the U.S. when I was 9. I eventually asked an uncle of mine, who had also immigrated to America and was originally from Vienna, Austria, why more people in the U.S. are not successful. His simple answer was glaring. He said, “They won’t ask for help.”

5. IF IT’S A BUSINESS DECISION, SURVEY YOUR EMPLOYEES AND CUSTOMERS

Making Decisions Quickly means asking customers and employees for help.5 ways to make decisions quickly is effective when you survey people. If you run a business that has customers, and the decision could affect your customers, ask them for their opinion. That could help you make decisions quickly.

Put together a simple survey and ask your customers for input. Perhaps you can offer a discount on a product or some other incentive to motivate them to complete your survey. Their input could be very valuable.

As noted above, when asking experts for their advice with your decision, you’ll make your customers feel important when you ask for their input. They may also become better customers if they feel that they had something to do with a product improvement or a change in your services.

Your employees can also be a great asset when it comes to decisions. Too many CEO’s feel that they have to make all of the decisions. Employees actually grow when we allow them to give us input when it comes to decisions. And, if they help you with ideas during difficult times, they will most likely buy into any changes that need to be made if they were asked for input.

If you send out any kind of company publication, and you’ve instigated a customer or an employees’ input in a decision, give that person recognition in your company publication. Everyone loves to see their name in lights.

Remember, leaders make decisions quickly and change their minds slowly. By implementing some of the above ideas, I believe you’ll be able to make decisions more quickly and enhance your leadership abilities.

How are Great Leaders Great Motivators?

How are great leaders great motivators? Great leaders gravitate to positions of authority, and make more money, because people want to follow them. They know how to motivate people and get them to want to help them achieve an important goal. But, leaders are not born that way. They don’t automatically know how to be great leaders and great motivators.

If you wish to become a great leader, who’s a great motivator, here are 5 steps to take:

1. HOW ARE GREAT LEADERS GREAT MOTIVATORS? BY BEING GENUINELY INTERESTED IN OTHER PEOPLE? 

Great leaders are great motivators because they are genuinely interested in others.How are great leaders great motivators? Dale Carnegie, in the best-selling book “How to Win Friends and Influence People”, said that the people who cause the most harm in society are the ones who aren’t interested in anyone but themselves. He also said that the people who are genuinely interested in others seem to have the doors of opportunity opening up ahead of them. Carnegie further stated that everybody’s favorite topic is THEM! It’s not you; it’s not me; it’s THEM.

So, a great leader gets to know people by letting them talk about themselves. My dearly departed Jewish mother was genuinely interested in other people and she let them talk about themselves. She said that everybody’s got a story and she felt she could learn something interesting from everybody she met.

How are great leaders great motivators? They realize that their future success is dependent on their ability to create great relationships. My mother created them in minutes by asked everybody the same Five Questions:

Where are you from originally?

(If not from here) What brought you here?

(If from here) Have you lived here all your life?

Do you have a family?

(If you don’t know) What do you do?

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

In my many years of being a speaker, with many events for groups of CEO’s worldwide, I’m amazed with how many people don’t really know the people they’ve been working with for many years. They can’t answer the five questions above. When I get them to sit down for coffee with those employees, and ask these questions, their leadership status goes way up because they’re being genuinely interested and letting people talk about their favorite topic – THEM.

2. THEY DON’T CRITICIZE, CONDEMN, OR COMPLAIN!

Great leaders are great motivators because they don't criticize, condemn, or complain.How are great leaders great motivators? They don’t criticize, condemn, or complain. That piece of important leadership training is at the heart of Chapter 1 of the Carnegie book. He said that, if you wanted to put the nails in the coffin of any relationship, go ahead and criticize, condemn, or complain.

The natural instinct is to do exactly that. However, great leaders realize that this is a huge roadblock when it comes to motivating other people. They also realize that the most precious thing anyone of us has is our self-image, the way we see ourselves. When we criticize other people, we’re tearing down their self-image. This is especially harmful when we do so in front of other people. That may be the moment they decide that they eventually want to work somewhere else.

Instead of criticizing, condemning, or complaining, how about stating the following when someone who reports to you makes a mistake or does something they shouldn’t have done: “What did we learn from this situation and what do you think we could do differently next time?” That statement will let someone save face and will teach them something productive when they come up with a better direction for the future.

Another productive step would be to go for an entire week without complaining about anything to anyone! Just do this and I think you’ll be amazed with how motivating that will be for the people around you.

3. THEY LET THE OTHER PERSON DO MOST OF THE TALKING

Great leaders are great motivators because they let the other person do a great deal of the talking.Great leaders are great motivators because they get other people to do more of the talking and to come up with their own ideas. After all, people will fight for their own ideas! God gave us two ears and one mouth. Maybe we should listen twice as much as we talk. The reason more people don’t become great leaders is that they feel they know it all and want to tell other people what to do. Who’s the only person growing here?

If you’re a leader of people, make sure you don’t monopolize meetings. Great leaders know that they will motivate others much better when they make the people around them shine. Thus, if you want to motivate others to help you with an idea, give the idea and then say the following: “I’d like to stop and get everyone’s opinion of my idea, whether you agree or disagree. Especially if you disagree, because I’ve been known to be wrong.”

I’m taking for granted that you’re genuinely interested in other people. If you’re not, don’t do this. Also, watch your tone of voice. We want people to feel safe talking in meetings, especially if they disagree. Then, don’t ask for volunteers. Simply start on one side of the room or the other. Then, when people comment, take notes, and not electronically. When we take notes, when someone else is talking, we honor them. What if they come up with a great idea? If possible, let them run with that idea. As I stated, people will fight for their own idea.

4. WHEN THEY’RE WRONG, THEY ADMIT IT QUICKLY AND EMPHATICALLY!

Great leaders are great motivators because they admit mistakes quickly.Great leaders are great motivators because, when they’re wrong, they admit it quickly and emphatically. It shows that they are human and that they’re open to learning. The majority of people will defend themselves, waste a lot of time, and not help improve the moment. The statement, “I was wrong!” can go a long way to show great leadership and to motivate other people to help you move ahead.

I was born in Israel. There, in company meetings, leaders do not tolerate people defending themselves when things go wrong. To them, defending is not acceptable. They believe it’s a big waste of time. They feel that, if you were wrong, admit it quickly and tell everyone what you learned in the process. They feel that there is great value in the lesson rather than beat a dead horse. That concept is taught from the leaders in Israeli companies and passed along to all team members.

5. THEY HELP THEIR TEAM MEMBERS IDENTIFY THEIR PERSONAL “WHY”

Great leaders are great motivators because they help others achieve their rewards.How are great leaders great motivators? Because they help the people who report to them identify an exciting next reward. Most people, who are in positions of authority, usually look at what others can do for them. It’s like wanting the heat out of the fireplace before putting the wood in. Great leaders who are great motivators look at things from another perspective. They look at it from the other person’s point of view and figure out what that person wants. The old saying is I’ll get everything I want out of life when I help enough other people get what they want.

How are great leaders great motivators? They start with identifying their own “Why” first. This would be something frivolous that you would do for YOU in the next few months, a short-term reward. The mind gets motivated by rewards. This is not something for anyone else, not for your family. It’s for YOU! You’ll do more for everybody when you do more for you! It could be a weekend away to somewhere special. Your personal budget for this might be $2,000 or $3,000. Get a picture of this reward, about the size of a business card, laminate it, and look at it the first thing each morning and the last thing each night.

Help the people who report to you do the same thing. Their budget will be less than yours, perhaps $500. Make sure they get a picture, laminate it, and start looking at it each day. Make a note of the rewards each one of your direct reports wants and look for ways to help them get that reward. This is motivation at the very core, what’s in the heart of the people you want to motivate.

6. RAISE YOUR ENTHUSIASM LEVEL!

Great leaders are great motivators because they show enthusiasm.How are great leaders great motivators? Napoleon Hill, in the famous book “Think and Grow Rich”, said that enthusiasm is the secret sauce that raises some people to a higher level of success than most people.

The word comes from the Greek and it means “God within”. It is the spark that makes other people want to follow you. We like following people who have some fire in their hearts and excitement in their spirit. As the saying goes, genius is always accompanied by ENTHUSIASM!

If you don’t feel like being enthusiastic, keep in mind that the group runs in the speed of the leader. Thus, if you want to be a great leader and a great motivator, you need to show enthusiasm. If you don’t have that now, may I suggest you declare the following affirmation the first thing every morning and the last thing each night? Those are the two times your subconscious mind is most open to suggestion.

How to Stop Panic Attacks before they stop you.

How to stop panic attacks is an important topic for many people. Many quietly suffer from these attacks. They can keep them from achieving greater success, harm their health, or perhaps ruin a relationship. If this is a problem for you, stop panic attacks now so they don’t derail your future! Because many people find this topic to be embarrassing, it’s as if this is a big secret. It shouldn’t be. Let’s talk about it and identify some productive solutions!

THIS CAN BE MENTAL PARALYSIS!

Stop anxiety attacks.Most of us have experienced panic attacks from time to time. They can be frightening, stop us in our tracks or get us off track. They can cause us to be temporarily “mentally paralyzed”. But why is this such a secret? Because it’s not pleasant to admit that we’ve actually been out of control. We don’t want to come out and say how scared we were at the time. We don’t want to admit the extent of the anxiety.

My aim here is to give you a few simple steps that can help you deal with such attacks. However, even more importantly, I want to share with you some powerful ideas that can help you become “immune” to panic attacks.

The Oxford University Press defines “panic” as a sudden uncontrollable fear or anxiety. It states that the origin of the word is from the name of the Greek God Pan, noted for causing terror. Panic attacks can feel like emotional terror.

THE MIND CONTROLS THE BODY!

Stop panic attacks by realizing that they are based on worry and fear. Whenever I’ve had a panic attack, it has always been preceded by thoughts of worry, fear, apprehension, and a lack of confidence. My mind was controlling my body. Have you ever heard of two people who have the same terminal disease and one lives and the other dies? What was the difference? I believe it’s how they saw their illnesses. One accepted the fact that he was going to die and the other decided that he was going to live. Their minds dictated the outcomes to their bodies.

PANIC ATTACKS BEGIN WITH WORRY

Stop panic attacks by conquering worry.I believe that most panic attacks begin with worry. Our mind can go in circles when we worry about something and we often think of the worst. That could make us panic. Dale Carnegie, author of the famous “How to Win Friends and Influence People” book, wrote another book which I feel is a great resource to help with worry. It’s called “How to Stop Worrying and Start Living.” In that book, he suggests living in day-tight compartments. Focusing on doing our best today. He also suggests that we write down a clear description of what we’re worried about, what we would do if the worst were to happen, and then write down a plan to deal with the worst outcome. That process could help tremendously in averting panic attacks.

HOW TO STOP PANIC ATTACKS STARTS WITH POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS

How to stop panic attacks with positive affirmations? What is the opposite of worry? Confidence. If you were totally confident about your future, would you worry about anything? I don’t think so. Would you live a more calm and peaceful life? I do believe you would. Would you be prone to panic attacks? I don’t think so. Thus, let’s start improving your life immediately by giving you some positive affirmations that I would ask you to read, out loud, the first thing every morning and the last thing each night. Those are the two times your subconscious mind is most open to suggestion. By the way, the first 15 minutes of every day will set your mood for the whole day!

By declaring positive, productive affirmations on a daily basis, we can re-program the subconscious mind just the way we would re-program a computer with better software. Create a laminated card, about the size of a business card, which will become your “Power Card”, and type the following affirmations on it:

“Everything I touch prospers and succeeds! I am a calm and peaceful person, make good decisions, create great relationships, and take care of my health. I am confident about my life and my future and I am a Champion!”

Keep this card with you at all times. Whenever you may feel anxiety, take this card out and declare the positive affirmations without analysis. Just say them out loud. This will become a strong antidote to help calm things down.

PANIC ATTACKS WON’T KILL YOU!

Having experienced a number of panic attacks during my life, I can tell you that, to me, they felt like a freight train coming right at me. It was as if that train was going to run right over me. The anxiety level was way out of control. Does this sound familiar? When the process begins, it is usually as a result of high anxiety. Anxiety is a response to a danger or a threat. As thoughts of fear and confusion flood the mind, the body responds accordingly. It’s as if that freight train is speeding down the track, totally out of control!

A body in motion tends to stay in motion. Therein lies one of the keys to panic attacks. We feel that we have no real control over the situation and we literally let the situation get out of control. After all, there is that freight train coming right at me. I used to envision a panic attack as a big monster over which I had no power. I thought that monster was going to inflict on me some serious physical harm with some life-threatening conditions. That was my mind speeding along, out of control, like that freight train I envisioned.

I was sure that my fast heartbeat could lead to a heart attack, that I might die from the panic attack and that I’d stop breathing. Sometimes, my vision would get blurred, I’d feel nausea, sweating, trembling, shaking, and my muscles tightened up. I’d feel very hot or very cold, as well as tired and drained.

I eventually went to a doctor and had a physical. I was fine. A visit to a cardiologist proved that I had no heart problems. These are very important steps to take so that you can put your mind at rest about any medical concerns.

SEE A DOCTOR AND GET THE FACTS!

Stop panic attacks by getting a checkup and realizing they will not kill you.How to stop panic attacks? You’ll help stop them by seeing a doctor. It was valuable to learn from my doctors that a panic attack cannot stop one’s breathing. It is just physically impossible. The parasympathetic nervous system acts as a safety brake and returns the body to normal functioning whether we command it or not. In fact, we humans have numerous built-in systems that protect us and help us survive. It’s like a scale that’s tilted too heavily toward one side and then, automatically, it levels out and becomes balanced.

Thus, when a panic attack occurs, there is no real attack or attacker. There is no real threat and no real danger. The body is simply reacting to destructive thoughts with a series of very disturbing bodily sensations. That perceived freight train is not going to run over you. There will not be a damaging collision that will cause you psychological or physical damage. Now that we’ve cleared the air about what will not happen during a panic attack, let’s shrink this perceived monster down to size.

STOP PANIC ATTACKS PERMANENTLY!

Stop panic attacks by stopping the fear.How to stop panic attacks by changing the way you perceive them? Once I realized that there was nothing physically wrong with me, by seeing several doctors, I had to change my view of a panic attack. Since no actual physical or psychological harm could come to me from such an attack, why was I seeing a panic attack as a monster? I decided to start seeing it as a disrespectful, defiant, obnoxious little child. And, whenever I felt a panic attack coming on, I pretended to talk to that bratty child by saying: “You’re having a temper tantrum again, aren’t you?”

That’s when I created my highly-productive process for overcoming panic attacks. I called it The Time Out Theory or simply The TOT System. If your child was disrespectful, defiant, and obnoxious, wouldn’t you resort to a little TIMEOUT?

When my children were small, that’s exactly what we had to do sometimes. And that’s what I suggest you do with your anxiety attacks. Here are the specific steps that I suggest you follow if you feel a panic attack coming on:

1. STOP AND SCOLD – Pretend as if the attack is a bratty child and say the following: “Here you are again. When you don’t get your way, you whine. I’m not going to let you grow up to be an obnoxious adult. Your tantrums don’t scare me anymore.”
2. TIMEOUT – Pretend as if that bratty child is now going to be put in a little chair in the corner until it settles down. Say the following: “You’re going for timeout. And you will sit in that corner until you settle down.”
3. LET IT WHINE – If you don’t feel your emotions slowing down, say the following to that defiant child: “Go ahead, cry and scream louder. I can’t hear you. Kick your feet and let me see how loud you can get.”

How to stop panic attacks? By doing the above 3 steps. You’ll shrink the perceived monster down to size and give it the identity of a small, disrespectful, defiant, and obnoxious tot. What do little kids do when we encourage them, while in the corner, to be even more obnoxious? They eventually get bored and stop.

You’re literally telling your body that whatever bad symptoms you’re currently experiencing, you’re not afraid of those symptoms intensifying because you now know that no physical or psychological harm will come to you as a result of this.

In addition, by seeing that whiny child in the corner, you have physically taken the perceived panic attack out of your body and put some distance between you and it.

4. MAKE NICE – What do parents usually do when a defiant child has finally settled down? They make nice, give a big hug, and rejoice in getting things back to normal. When you feel your symptoms easing up, say the following: “I’m so proud of you for settling down. You are a well-behaved, special child and I am proud of you!”

By allowing a panic attack to run its course without fear, you are literally getting on that train that you thought was coming right at you and you’re going to take it for a ride.

The subconscious mind cannot tell the difference between something real and something imagined. Thus, the more times you follow the TOT System, the more real your perceptions will become and the more effective this process will be.

How to stop panic attacks? Use these simple ideas on a regular basis. One day you may find that you have become so good at this that you’ll be able to stop a panic attack before it even gets a chance to get going.
