Creativity can be improved and is within each of us, if we decide! Many of my speaking engagements each year are for Vistage groups of CEOs, key executives, and owners of small businesses. Vistage is the world’s largest organization of CEOs. Each group has a chairman. I was very impressed with the creativity of one of these chairmen when I spoke for a Vistage group in San Luis Obispo, California.
Her name is Uta Birkmayer and, as I was speaking, she was creating an amazing visualization of my presentation. The picture above is of her 4 ft. x 8 ft. creation.
It took me a little while to realize what Uta was doing. She was actually taking every major concept that I teach and visualizing it with words and illustrations on a giant poster.
Uta later told me that the process is called visual recording. She had taken a course that is offered both in San Francisco and in Germany by Grove Consultants International.
According to their web site, people learn from them to facilitate groups and support their work by using large-scale graphic displays to help them clarify and achieve their meeting outcomes. In other words, people get a visual picture of the main points they’re discussing.
I was very impressed with Uta’s creativity. I think this shows us that creativity can be improved, that we are all very creative in some way, if we give ourselves a chance. Thus, if you want to improve your creativity, the affirmation below may help.
The second thing I thought about, when I saw Uta creating the large visualization, was that it’s helpful to see things on paper. If you have a problem that seems difficult to solve, why not write down and draw out the main elements of the problem and some possible solutions.
When things go around in circles in our minds, not much happens. However, when we get ideas out of our minds, and onto paper, somehow clarity comes about. Then we can draw some better conclusions and come up with some answers.
“I’m a very creative person. I come up with novel ideas regularly.”
