Why Optimism Works

Why optimism works is something we should all think about. We make a subconscious choice when we wake up each morning. We will either operate as an optimist or a pessimist that day. Unless we make a conscious effort to be optimistic, we’ll automatically gravitate toward pessimism. It’s just plain easier to be negative because it gives us an excuse not take actions we know we should take. However, the meaningful achievements in life come from showing leadership by being optimistic. Optimism comes from the Latin optimus, which means “the best.” That’s what leaders are always striving for in their daily activities. They simply expect positive things to happen in their lives and thus they look for them. What we focus on expands. Optimists focus on what they want and expect good things to happen no matter what. If you want to become more optimistic, here are some ideas I’m optimistic will be meaningful for you.


Why Optimism WorksMedical studies have proven that optimists are generally healthier than pessimists. Something good happens in the body when we’re optimistic. Stress is reduced, anxiety levels are lowered, and we’re generally more relaxed when we look for the good. Most optimists realize that it’s important to take care of themselves. They eat healthier meals, exercise regularly, and realize that smoking doesn’t get them where they want to be. They get checkups regularly and, most of the time, their results show that they are healthier than pessimists. An optimistic attitude appears to strengthen the immune and cardiovascular systems while building up the body’s ability to handle stress.

If you want to be more optimistic, and don’t have that attitude now, getting regular exercise is a great way to begin. Perhaps a walk around the block, two or three times a week. Then you can progress from there. As I write this, I am 70 years old. I get a yearly physical and am always looking for ways to improve my health. By doing that, I’m optimistic that I’ll live productively for many more years. Last year my A1C blood sugar number was getting a little high, edging toward diabetes. After watching my diet for a few months, and not seeing much change, I decided to up my exercise regimen at the gym from 2 times a week to 5 times a week. Lifting some weights and using a treadmill each of those times got my blood sugar number back to normal! Taking control of my health, with regular exercise, helps me keep an optimistic attitude and makes me feel better every day.


Why Optimism WorksWhy optimism works is a concept that involves other people. In order to achieve greater things in life, most of us need the cooperation of others. At the same time, our attitude is contagious to everyone around us. If we’re generally pessimistic, those around us feel that and they act accordingly. Napoleon Hill, in the book “Think and Grow Rich,” said that we are all like radio stations. We’re constantly sending our signals to everyone around us. Most people send negative signals and then they wonder why they don’t get cooperation. Optimists make a conscious effort to send out positive signals with the idea of uplifting everyone around them.

Since attitude is everything, we should focus on being part of the building crew rather than part of the wrecking crew if we want to be optimistic. An optimistic attitude shows leadership and, if we have people who report to us, that kind of attitude will inspire them to do their best. Dale Carnegie, in the book “How to Win Friends and Influence People,” said that we should look for the good and embellish it and, as much as possible, disregard the bad. Surveys have shown that the majority of managers in companies do not follow this concept and thus do not relate well to their team members. An optimistic leader, who looks for the good, and gives proper recognition, will have a shortcut to greater success.


Why Optimism WorksWhy optimism works recognizes that we all get down from time to time. The most successful people have often had the most failures. Babe Ruth, known as the home run hitter in baseball many years ago, also had the most strikeouts. Champions get depressed when a project doesn’t work out, when they don’t get a big deal, or when they get fired. However, optimistic, positive people have learned that they can’t afford to stay down. They have developed techniques for getting up faster. They look for what they can learn from every failure and make a mental note not to make the same mistake again.

I was born in Israel. Executives there have a very productive method for helping their team members get through failures. They feel that defending is not acceptable. The failure has happened and any time that person spends defending themselves is a waste of time. They immediately go to “What did you learn?” They get excited to hear from that person what they learned and how that lesson can be of value in the future. What if we did that when we face our next failure? What if we asked ourselves “What did I learn and what will I do differently in the future?” We need to become a car with no rear view mirror. Optimists look forward and thus they see opportunities. Looking backward at a failure, and getting depressed about it, blinds us to what good thing may be ahead of us.


Why Optimism WorksWhy optimism works is a concept that begins at the beginning of each day. Optimists realize that the first 15 minutes of every day are critical if they want to be optimistic. These days, we all have so many inputs with cell phones, texting, email, and phone calls. When you throw in radio and television news, as well as the daily paper, the inputs are monumental. Having been a newscaster when I was in college, I can tell you that we weren’t told to look for positive stories. Our theme was “If it bleeds, it leads.” In other words, much of the news we pay attention to each morning is negative. Thus, I suggest turning off radio and television news in the morning and canceling the daily paper.

Instead, how about ordering a good attitude every morning by declaring positive affirmations of how we want our attitude to be that day. The brain cannot tell the difference between something real and something we imagine. Thus, let’s imagine an optimistic attitude each morning and see how that affects what we do the rest of the day. Here are examples of a couple of optimistic affirmations:


Just declare that affirmation, or something similar, the first thing each morning without analysis. If you want to add more power to your future, repeat the affirmations at night just before you go to sleep. That way, your brain can work on those thoughts throughout the night. The first thing each morning and the last thing each night are the two times your subconscious mind is most open to suggestion.


Why Optimism WorksWhy optimism works relates to our happiness. Too many times, and I’ve been as guilty of this as anyone, we think that other people affect how happy or how miserable we are. Actually, we’re all about 6” away from happiness and greater success – the distance between our ears. I had to learn that the only person really responsible for my attitude, and my success, was ME. And, when it came to me, I was way too hard on myself. That set up mental roadblocks which kept me from greater success. I had to learn to get off my own back.

The way I did that is by declaring the following affirmation every morning and every evening: I AM PROUD OF ME. The first month I did that I was lying through my teeth because, in the past, I had sold myself on the opposite. Even today, I can get as negative as quickly as anybody else. I just can’t afford to stay there. Thus, when I get depressed and unhappy, I simply take mental inventory. I remind myself that I have good health, have loving people around me, am talented, and that I do have a certain measure of success in my work. Thus, I quickly realize that those things are more valuable to me than the momentary dilemma. That process helps me get back toward productive action and toward happiness.

Why optimism works recognizes that optimism is a vital trait of successful people. It can be developed by taking a few simple steps every day. The rewards for this effort are certainly much greater than the disappointments that come from being pessimistic.

Harness the power of enthusiasm

Harness the power of enthusiasm and you will escalate your success to a higher level. Napoleon Hill, in the book “Think and Grow Rich”, listed 31 major causes of failure. Point #22 was lack of enthusiasm. He said, “Without enthusiasm, one cannot be convincing. Moreover, enthusiasm is contagious, and the person who has it, under control, is generally welcome in any group of people.” In the same book, Hill tells about Andrew Carnegie, the Scotsman who came to America with very little to his name and eventually gave away over two hundred million dollars. He hired the young Charles Schwab to run his U.S. Steel Corporation and paid him over a million dollars a year at the beginning of the Twentieth Century! Read on and you’ll learn why.


It was in 1897, when Schwab was just 35, that he became president of the Carnegie Steel Company. Then, in 1901, he helped negotiate the sale of Carnegie Steel to J.P. Morgan and a group of New York financiers. After that, Schwab became the first president of the U.S. Steel Corporation, which was formed out of Carnegie’s former holdings.

Schwab did not get that position because he knew more about the production of steel than anyone else. One of the main reasons was his enthusiasm. Here is a quote from Schwab: “I consider my ability to arouse enthusiasm among men the greatest asset I possess.” He also said, “A man can succeed at almost anything for which he has unlimited enthusiasm.” Walter Chrysler, of automobile manufacturing fame, said: “The real secret of success is enthusiasm.”

Thus, if we want to get ahead, whether we feel like it or not, we’ve got to develop and use enthusiasm on a daily basis. Here are some ideas to improve our enthusiasm.


Harness the power of enthusiasm by harnessing your thoughts. Our thoughts become our actions and our reality. If you declare that it’s hard for you to show enthusiasm, that’s exactly how you’re going to act. The subconscious mind cannot tell the difference between something real and something we imagine. Thus, if we focus our thoughts in one direction, we can focus our thoughts in another direction. That more positive direction can make a big difference in our success!

What you do the first 15 minutes of each day will set your mood for the entire day. Most people set a negative mood by watching television news, listening to the radio, or reading the paper. Most of that is full of murder and mayhem. I suggest turning off the news in the morning and, instead, declaring some positive affirmations that will help you build your enthusiasm:

Everything I touch prospers and succeeds. I show enthusiasm every day, in everything I do, and to everyone around me. As a result, great things are happening in my life! My personal relationships are improving and I’m attracting more money into my life than ever before. I am excited!

Don’t analyze these words. Just declare them, out loud, the first thing every morning and the last thing every night. Those are the two times your subconscious minds is most open to suggestion. Do this for 90 days and watch how it improves the enthusiasm you show every day and thus escalates your success!


Harness the power of enthusiasmHarness the power of enthusiasm by declaring certain words. Years ago, when I was a television producer and director, I produced a weekly television program on Lifetime Television. I remember many a nights, when we were shooting our show at a Los Angeles television studio, we worked late into the evenings. I helped direct our program. As a director, it was up to me to get everyone’s energy up, when we worked late, so we could finish our program, make it look good, and go home.

Thus, in the control room, and to everyone in the studio, I would say on my headset, with enthusiasm: “It’s showtime!” That would suddenly energize everyone and we were able to get our work done.

I know there are days when all of us don’t feel like being enthusiastic. There are some days when I don’t feel like being enthusiastic. However, by allowing those feelings to become our main focus, we could be losing opportunities. Thus, when I feel tired, or depressed, I simply say to myself “It’s showtime!” Then, as I pretend to be enthusiastic, that affects everyone around me in a very positive way. They start showing more enthusiasm and, for the next hour or two, I operate on their energy! Norman Vincent Peale said, “If you have zest and enthusiasm you attract zest and enthusiasm. Life does give back in kind.”


Harness the power of enthusiasmHarness the power of enthusiasm by overcoming depression. When I don’t feel like being enthusiastic, it’s usually the result of my being depressed or upset about something. That’s when I think about the fact that a leader does what has to be done, when it has to be done, whether they feel like it or not. To help me turn a moment like that around, so I can get back to enthusiasm, I made a list of the four or five major things that have worked out right in my life.

You might do the same thing. On your list might be your good health, a loving family, your talents, or your career. Then, when something doesn’t work out the way you want, take a look at your list of major positives in your life. Ask yourself, “Would I trade anything on this list in exchange for fixing whatever I’m upset about at the moment?” I believe the answer will be “No way!” I find that doing this helps me get out of a rut of depression and refocuses me on what is really important.


Harness the power of enthusiasmHarness the power of enthusiasm by following the thoughts of Og Mandino. Mandino wrote a number of amazing books including “The Greatest Salesman in the World”. He said this about enthusiasm: Enthusiasm is the greatest asset in the world. Its potential value far surpasses money and power and influence. Single-handed, the enthusiast convinces and dominates where the wealth accumulated by a small army of workers would scarcely raise a tremor of interest. Enthusiasm tramples over prejudice and opposition, spurns inaction, storms the citadel of its object and, like an avalanche, overwhelms and engulfs all obstacles.”

Thus, if I could truly convince you that showing more enthusiasm on a daily basis could bring great riches into your life, would that be worth the effort to show it every day? If showing enthusiasm would truly help you overcome obstacles, would that be worth the effort? Why not make a concerted effort to show enthusiasm on a daily basis for 30 days and see what happens? I believe you’ll see magic occur in your life that will be like an avalanche of positive things happening in your favor.

State the affirmations above and below, without analysis, and watch how those words will change your thoughts. Your thoughts will become your actions and everyone around you will benefit from your enthusiasm! Then, I believe, everything you touch will indeed prosper and succeed!

Inspire a change in attitude.

Inspire a change in attitude and watch what good things are about to happen in your organization! A secret potential that somehow manages to stay under the radar, for many project managers and leaders, is that any group or organization can achieve more of its goals with a change in attitude. The key question is how this change can be achieved and maintained. Daily routines seldom make people realize that their attitude is something they should be aware of and that it’s possible for them to adjust it. That is where an attitude speaker comes in.

How to keep millennials from leaving their jobs is an important matter for a number of reasons. In a world when more and more people are changing jobs more often than in the past, it’s important to do whatever is possible to keep good employees. This is especially true with millennials.

According to the Dale Carnegie Course people, “Only 17% of employees are satisfied in their job.” And, they further stated, “45% of employees are planning on leaving their job in the next 12 months.”

That presents a very expensive proposition for most companies. They invest in training and mentoring and then a valuable employee jumps ship to go to work for another company. With millennials, the cost of turnover can be very expensive!


How to keep millennials from leaving their jobs begins with realizing that we are all very similar. Some people think that, with all of the electronics and social media activity these days, millennials are very different people. They may be in some ways. However, I feel that most people are more alike than they are different.

Surveys have shown that the main reason people leave their job voluntarily is not because of money. We think that if we throw enough money at a situation, surely it will be OK. Not if we mistreat people. The main reason people go somewhere else, is that they weren’t made to feel important.

Dale Carnegie, in the book “How to Win Friends and Influence People”, said that we all “need to feel important.” Notice he didn’t say that people “want” to feel important. He said we all “need” to feel important. And that goes for millennials. When keeping millennials from leaving their jobs is important, keep in mind that making them feel important is vital.

Here are 5 steps to help with this.


Make people feel important.How to keep millennials from leaving their jobs begins at the beginning. We need to make them feel important from the beginning, when they interview for the job. Instead of focusing on the resume, let the candidate talk about themselves first. Tell them that each individual is important to your company and you would like to first learn about them and their background. One question will make them feel important and tell you whether they are a good candidate for your company. State the following: “I see what it says on your resume and we’ll talk more about that in a moment. First, could you just tell me about yourself?”

If they can’t talk about themselves, with some animation and enthusiasm, perhaps they’re the wrong person to come to work with your company. However, if they do feel comfortable telling you about their past, where they’re from originally, their family, and their history, you’ll get a good feeling about their potential and make them feel important at the same time. I’m taking for granted that the person interviewing is genuinely interested in other people.

In many companies, where there are more than just a few employees, most people don’t get to know a new employee for quite some time. Keeping in mind that it’s important to make them feel important, introduce the new employee to the entire staff on their first day of work. Make them feel special from the beginning.

One CEO gave me the following idea, which I thought was wonderful. On the first day of a new employee’s hire, they throw an ice cream social, at lunchtime, in honor of that new employee. They put up signs around their offices which read, “It’s (persons name) Day at (name of company). Welcome to our team!” Then, at lunchtime, they bring in vats of ice cream and the big celebration is on in the company lunchroom. How would that make you feel if it was your first day of work at a new company?


Ask for help in meeting.How to keep millennials from leaving their jobs means that we should let them take an active part in all meetings. In many companies, management does most of the talking in meetings and sometimes some of the attendees never talk. I think that is a big mistake. To make people feel important, give individual points in a meeting and then poll the audience. Say the following: “I’d like to stop and get everyone’s opinion on my last point. Whether you agree or disagree. Especially if you disagree, because I’ve been known to be wrong.” Watch your tone of voice when you do this. You want people to feel comfortable, especially if they disagree.

Don’t ask for volunteers. Simply start on one side of the room or the other and make sure everyone talks. Take notes, and not electronically. Electronically they can’t tell if you’re really taking notes. Millennials are made to feel important when we ask their opinion about a point and then take notes. They may have a valuable point.

Then, say the following: “If you were the CEO (or manager of a department) of this company, how would you lower expenses, improve productivity, or get more clients?” Then, watching your tone of voice, go around the room again. Someone may come up with a brilliant idea. When someone does, and you implement it with good results, compliment that person at the next meeting. Again, especially with millennials, you’ll make them feel important.


Keeping millennials from leaving their jobs is helped with hand-written notes.

How to keep millennials from leaving their jobs means we’ve got to do things differently than most people do. Using hand-written note cards is very different, especially because the millennials are so used to social media and electronic communications. Keep a stack of note cards that don’t have your company logo on them. A card with a company logo makes it look as if you have many of those and you send them to a lot of people. Buy some note cards at the drug store that start blank on the inside and have a design on the cover. These are to be mailed to the home address of the millennials, not through inter-office mail. It makes a bigger impact that way. In order to make a further impact, do not put the return address on the back. Do not meter these. Use commemorative stamps. They make another impact.

I have found that one line, in your handwriting, on a note card, will mean more to these employees than a paragraph in an e-mail. These are not to be sent on birthdays or anniversaries. They’re sent “just because.” If you notice them being nice to other employees, send a note. If they close a good deal for your company, send a note.

It is said that we’ll get everything we want out of life when we help enough other people get what they want. Early on in their employment, sit down with a millennial and tell them that their personal goals are important to you. And, you want to find a way to help them achieve some of those goals. Ask them the following: “If someone were to give you an extra $500, and you couldn’t save it or pay off debts or give it to someone else, what would you do with the money?”

It could be a weekend away, a night out for dinner and a show, going camping, or whatever. In other words, what would they do to reward themselves with something they wouldn’t normally do? Once they identify that, encourage them to get a picture of that reward and to look at it the first thing each morning and the last thing each night. Have them post that picture in their office, or at their work station, so you’ll constantly know about their next reward.

When you want them to show extra effort with an important project, find a way to help them get that reward with perhaps a bonus when that project is completed successfully. This step will make them feel very important. When is the last time an employer showed interest in their personal goals?

Follow these 5 steps regularly and I believe you will find that they will make the millennials in your company feel important. That, I believe, will also cut down on the staggering cost of millennial turnover.

You can become a great leader in 5 steps and great leaders make more money than the average person. True leadership, these days, seems to be short in supply. However, if you seek to achieve greatness, then we need to focus on leadership. Not the dictatorial type that insists on others doing what they want them to do. I’m talking about leadership that makes the other person want to do what you want them to do.

I’m a graduate of The Dale Carnegie Course. I took it years ago, while I was in college, and learned a number of simple leadership traits that have helped me tremendously through the years.

From that course, and from my many years of running companies and being a professional speaker, I’ve assembled a list of 5 steps that I believe could help anyone become a better leader.


Become a great leader by reading.Become a great leader in 5 steps by continuing your education. My college degree, in Journalism, Public Relations, and Advertising, was just the beginning of my education. My real education, over many years, has been a study diet of being a perpetual student. In the Dale Carnegie Course, I learned about Carnegie’s best-selling book “How to Win Friends and Influence People.” This is not only a great human relations book, but it’s also a great book on leadership.

I came to realize that it was much more valuable to read one book many times than to read many books one time only. Thus, I read that book once a month, every month, for five years – 60 times! Repetition is the mother of skill. Now those thoughts are a part of me.

Thus, whether it’s that book, or another one that you feel can help with your leadership skills, read it over and over. When you have a difficult leadership moment, go in your office and read a page in that book. The thoughts will shift your gears and help you get through the moment more productively.

Become a great leader in 5 steps by starting the morning right.Become a great leader in 5 steps by being aware of whose watching. If we are to lead others, we must be aware of the following: THE GROUP RUNS AT THE SPEED OF THE LEADER! That’s right. We can’t expect other people to follow us if we’re not showing great leadership traits. And that begins when we wake up and get our day started. Be careful what you do when you first wake up!

The first 15 minutes of each day set our mood for the whole day. May I suggest you turn off radio and television news the first thing each morning? Many years ago I was a newscaster. They didn’t tell us to find positive stories. Our slogan was: “If it bleeds, it leads!” In fact, I suggest not watching the late TV news before going to sleep. Most of that is full of murder and mayhem.

Thus, I suggest you declare positive affirmations the first thing each morning and the last thing each night. Here are some suggested affirmations:

“Everything I touch prospers and succeeds. I’m a people person and a great leader. I’m a very good listener and I help people come up with their own ideas.”

Don’t analyze the affirmations. Just declare what you want and watch how that sets your mood for the whole day.

In addition to your affirmations in the morning, I suggest you read two or three pages in the Carnegie book each day. When you get through with the book, read it over again and again.


Become a great leader by listening.Become a great leader in 5 steps by becoming an exceptional listener. With so much electronics taking people’s attention these days, who is truly listening to anyone? Surveys have been made to determine why people leave their jobs voluntarily? Money is not the number one answer. The real answer is that they weren’t made to feel important. People will do more for a feeling of importance than they will for money.

This type of turnover is very expensive! I believe that a major explanation for those numbers is that most leaders fail to understand that people “need” to feel important. They think that if they throw enough money at a situation, surely people will be happy. Not so. If we mistreat people, they will eventually have had it with us and 45% plan to leave.

The main way we can make people feel important is by talking less and listening more. God gave us two ears and one mouth. Perhaps we should look at those proportions. Great leaders make people feel important by listening attentively to them.

So, when employees who report to you want to talk with you, please close your computer and put down your phone. Grab a notepad and take notes. And not electronically. On an actual notepad. And, rather than make them feel as if you want them to stop, state the following: “Tell me more.”

Then, when they have completed their point or points, ask them how they would resolve the situation. Don’t give in to the urge to give advice. A great leader let’s other people come up with their own ideas.


Being a great leader means people follow you.Become a great leader in 5 steps by making people realize that you are willing to first do what you ask them to do. I was born in Israel. My family immigrated to the U.S. when I was 9. Since its birth in 1948, Israel has become a miracle in growing its economy and becoming a world leader in technical developments. Other than the U.S., there are more companies on the NASDAQ from Israel than any other country in the world. Some 8 million people, in a very small country, are doing amazing things!

Everyone, both men and women, serve in the military in Israel. It is in that military that they learn certain leadership skills that I believe are really valuable. Military leaders do not order their soldiers to do anything they are not willing to do first. Thus, their theory of leadership in the military is “follow me!”

Thus, when people in Israel get out of the army and either start or run companies, they follow the same theory of leadership. They do not ask their employees to do anything they are not willing to do first.

They also have a way of identifying problems and solutions quickly. Executives in Israel have an open door policy. Anyone can walk in at any time. They just have to fill out a form first. That form is called “The Opportunity Form”. It has three questions: What is the problem? What is your solution? And, if it takes money, how much? This is a great way to get right to the heart of the problem and to get people to come up with their own ideas. After all, people will fight for their own ideas.


Become a great leader by praising.Become a great leader in 5 steps by showing appreciation to others. Since people will do more for a feeling of importance then they will for money, giving people proper recognition is really important when it comes to great leadership.

Carnegie said, when it comes to recognition, we should be hearty in our approbation (approval) and lavish in our praise. When an employee does something special, recognize that person in front of others, perhaps at a company meeting, and give them genuine compliments for doing a great job. You will make that person feel important and you’ll encourage others to also do a better job.

Most people only hear from their boss when they do something wrong. That’s the opposite of good leadership. Carnegie said, “Look for the good and, as much as possible, disregard the bad.” Great leaders focus on what is going right and make a big deal out of that. It doesn’t mean they don’t take care of problems. They just don’t focus on them.

Goals don't need to be uphill.

Goals are important. However, too often, we either don’t identify them clearly or we set them so high it seems as if we’re going uphill.

When I spoke before a great group in Canada, I was at the Calgary Golf and Country Club in Calgary. Since I was there, I took the picture above from the back patio of the club. I learned the following on the club’s web site: “Established in 1897, the Club bought land on an isolated bend of the Elbow River in 1909 and began play in 1911.

The foundation of today’s course was laid out by the Scottish designer Willie Park, Jr. in 1922 and restored to his classic standard in a 2005-2007 major renovation.


I’ll admit to you that I do not play golf and do not know much about the game or the rules. However, the reason I took the picture above was that it shows a beautiful flat putting green and then it shows people hitting golf balls uphill.

I realize there are hills on golf courses. This one just seemed steeper to me and it’s as if players were being challenged to hit certain marks up the hill. Those marks being the white circles in the picture, up the hill.


I got to thinking about the correlation of that golf course to us setting goals in life. As a result, too many times we set goals that are so far ahead that we don’t believe them. Thus, we don’t take action.

That might be the golf shot all the way up the hill in Calgary.

What if we broke our goals down to believable portions? Perhaps trying to hit the closest uphill mark in the picture above? Then, when we hit that, it might give us the confidence to hit the next mark up the hill.

Thus, if you have an important goal for this year, and you haven’t taken action, why not break it down into achievable and believable portions? As a result, you will take action on the first step and see what happens.

This could give your goals a lift!

Positive Moments Can Be Beneficial!

Positive moments can be beneficial when we focus on them instead of what’s not currently working. What we focus on expands! Thus, we have to be careful what we think about. It’s easy to focus on the negatives and most people do. Champion focus on positive moments!


When I spoke in Chicago, I went by Northwestern University in Evanston. That visit was a case of nostalgia. I spent my 1965 summer, between my junior and senior years in high school, at the National High School Speech Institute at the university. The picture above of Northwestern is from questbridge.org.

That was an amazing summer as I worked in the radio and television studios of the university and got to know high school students from all over the country who were part of the program. Keeping in mind that positive moments can be beneficial, those were positive moments.


Something else that I remember with great fondness is what my uncle in New York sent my brother and me in 1956 when we lived in Israel. That was just before my family immigrated to the United States and my uncle sent us a couple of yellow T-shirts.

That’s me in the picture, after we arrived in America, when I was 9, along with my mother, in February of 1957.

I was wearing the T-shirt, which was from the old New York Giants baseball team. You’ll notice the old-fashioned phone, when it was wired into the wall.



We all get depressed from time to time and I certainly do. Perhaps, at those moments, we should think back to simpler times that meant a lot to us, were positive experiences, and made us feel good.

That summer at Northwestern was very special. The feeling of wearing the T-shirt from America to school was very special. Those were positive times that I need to treasure in my memory bank and bring to mind when I feel down.


What if we made a list of 10 moments from our past that made us feel special and that we cherish? And, when we feel depressed, what if we took out that list and brought those moments from the past to the forefront?

Positive moments can be beneficial. Thinking about them could change our momentum and, for a moment, put the past ahead of us.

Peacefulness should be sought out.

Peacefulness is important to all of us. When I was a newscaster on a radio station in Tulsa, Oklahoma, while in high school in 1965, there was a peaceful song on the radio. “The Sound of Silence” by Simon & Garfunkel, had just been released. It was a beautiful and soothing melody.


I was reminded of that song when I arrived to speak for a group at the Sooke Harbour House, about an hour’s drive from the airport on Victoria Island in British Columbia.

Hence, if you look closely at the picture I took above, you can see a totem pole standing guard to make sure no one disturbs the peacefulness of this place. As a result, I was struck by the beauty and the majestic silence that I found there. Other than the harbor water gently lapping onto the rocks, it was total silence. This was simply amazing!


As the line from the Simon & Garfunkel song says, “And the vision that was planted in my brain, still remains, within the sound of silence.”

Did you ever notice that there’s so much noise in our everyday lives: TV sets are on, people talking on the phone, traffic, music blaring into headphones.

Thus, it was almost a shock to the system to stand there at the Sooke Harbour House, overlooking the bay, and hearing the sound of silence. Maybe we should make a conscious effort to find such a place sometimes and touch the sound of silence.

Attitude Speaker and Goals as Relating to Roulette.

Attitude speaker and goals are two important things to me. I also realize that our attitude toward our goals is very important. Thus, we cannot gamble with that. It’s important to identify our goals, in writing, break them down, and take action.

I noticed an attitude lesson when I spoke in Las Vegas and walked through the casino at the Mirage Hotel. I saw the roulette game and took the above picture of it.


Wikipedia explains that “Roulette is a casino game named after the French word meaning little wheel. Players may choose to place bets on either a single number or a range of numbers.

The colors are red or black, whether the number is odd or even, or if the numbers are high (19-36) or low (1-18).

No matter which way you look at it, playing roulette is a gamble. We’re hoping the ball lands on the right number so we can win.


When we don’t write down our important goals, we’re gambling that things will work out the way we want.

As an attitude speaker, I learned that we’ve got to change our attitude about our goals and realize that “for things to change, we’ve got to change.” It’s not the economy. It’s not the weather and it’s not good breaks. It’s US and our attitude.

If you haven’t already done so, I encourage you to write down your 5 most important goals for the next 5 years. Then write down the steps you will take in the next 12 months and the next 30 days to help accomplish those goals.

Let’s make sure that the figurative roulette wheel in your life has the ball landing on the right number! That’s a productive way to take control of your power!

Attitude means everything. It can be adjusted.

Attitude means everything and it needs to be adjusted on a regular basis. I learned an important lesson about adjusting our attitude when I recently spoke in St. Louis and stopped by the famous Gateway Arch.


According to Wikipedia, “The Gateway Arch is a 630-foot monument in St. Louis. Clad in stainless steel and built in the form of an inverted, weighted catenary arch, it is the world’s tallest arch. It’s also the tallest man-made monument in the Western Hemisphere, and Missouri’s tallest building.

Built as a monument to the westward expansion of the United States, and officially dedicated to ‘the American people,’ it is the centerpiece of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial and has become an internationally recognized symbol of St. Louis, as well as a popular tourist attraction.”

The Gateway Arch took two and a half years to construct and was opened to the public in 1967. It is located at the site of where St. Louis was founded, on the bank of the Mississippi River.

I’ve had the amazing experience of riding the unique elevator system in the arch that takes visitors to the observation deck at the top. Most noteworthy is the bird’s eye view of the city of St. Louis that one gets at the top. Especially relevant is the fact that the building of The Arch was an engineering marvel! I would guess that, with the builders of this incredible monument, they would have agreed that attitude means everything!


Most people take a four-minute tram in either one of the legs to get to the top of The Arch. Each tram is a chain of eight cylindrical, five-seat compartments, that swing like Ferris-wheel cars as they go up and down.

Thus, in order to keep the passengers level, these compartments make a series of adjustments as they move up and down The Arch. In reality, those adjustments are similar to the changes that happen in each of our lives.

Unexpected things happen to all of us, good or bad, and we have to react. Therefore, if we react with a bad mood, that could affect the outcome negatively. Thus, it’s not what happens, it’s how we react and attitude is everything. Hence, Champions have bad moments. However, they just react more quickly and look for any positive step they could take to make things better.

Just like the tram compartments at the St. Louis Arch, life is a series of adjustments. Hence, if these adjustments are difficult for you, the following affirmation may help.


“I look for the good in any difficult situation and look for a productive step I can can take immediately!”
