How to stop panic attacks is an important topic for many people. Many quietly suffer from these attacks. They can keep them from achieving greater success, harm their health, or perhaps ruin a relationship. Stop panic attacks now so they don’t derail your future! Because many people find this topic to be embarrassing, it’s as if this is a big secret. It shouldn’t be. Let’s talk about it and identify some productive solutions!


Stop anxiety attacks.Most of us have experienced panic attacks from time to time. They can be frightening, stop us in our tracks or get us off track. They can cause us to be temporarily “mentally paralyzed”. But why is this such a secret? Because it’s not pleasant to admit that we’ve actually been out of control. We don’t want to come out and say how scared we were at the time. We don’t want to admit the extent of the anxiety.

My aim here is to give you a few simple steps that can help you deal with such attacks. However, even more importantly, I want to share with you some powerful ideas that can help you become “immune” to panic attacks.

The Oxford University Press defines “panic” as a sudden uncontrollable fear or anxiety. It states that the origin of the word is from the name of the Greek God Pan, noted for causing terror. Panic attacks can feel like emotional terror.


Stop panic attacks by realized that they are based on worry and fear. Whenever I’ve had a panic attack, it has always been preceded by thoughts of worry, fear, apprehension, and a lack of confidence. My mind was controlling my body. Have you ever heard of two people who have the same terminal disease and one lives and the other dies? What was the difference? I believe it’s how they saw their illnesses. One accepted the fact that he was going to die and the other decided that he was going to live. Their minds dictated the outcomes to their bodies.


Stop panic attacks by conquering worry.I believe that most panic attacks begin with worry. Our mind can go in circles when we worry about something and we often think of the worst. That could make us panic. Dale Carnegie, author of the famous “How to Win Friends and Influence People” book, wrote another book which I feel is a great resource to help with worry. It’s called “How to Stop Worrying and Start Living.” In that book, he suggests living in day-tight compartments. Focusing on doing our best today. He also suggests that we write down a clear description of what we’re worried about, what we would do if the worst were to happen, and then write down a plan to deal with the worst outcome. That process could help tremendously in averting panic attacks.


How to stop panic attacks with positive affirmations? What is the opposite of worry? Confidence. If you were totally confident about your future, would you worry about anything? I don’t think so. Would you live a more calm and peaceful life? I do believe you would. Would you be prone to panic attacks? I don’t think so. Thus, let’s start improving your life immediately by giving you some positive affirmations that I would ask you to read, out loud, the first thing every morning and the last thing each night. Those are the two times your subconscious mind is most open to suggestion. By the way, the first 15 minutes of every day will set your mood for the whole day!

By declaring positive, productive affirmations on a daily basis, we can re-program the subconscious mind just the way we would re-program a computer with better software. Create a laminated card, about the size of a business card, which will become your “Power Card”, and type the following affirmations on it:

“Everything I touch prospers and succeeds! I am a calm and peaceful person, make good decisions, create great relationships, and take care of my health. I am confident about my life and my future and I am a Champion!”

Keep this card with you at all times. Whenever you may feel anxiety, take this card out and declare the positive affirmations without analysis. Just say them out loud. This will become a strong antidote to help calm things down.


Stop panic attacks by cutting anxiety down to size.How to stop panic attacks was an important subject for me in the past. Having experienced a number of panic attacks during my life, I can tell you that, to me, they felt like a freight train coming right at me. It was as if that train was going to run right over me. The anxiety level was way out of control. Does this sound familiar? When the process begins, it is usually as a result of high anxiety. Anxiety is a response to a danger or a threat. As thoughts of fear and confusion flood the mind, the body responds accordingly. It’s as if that freight train is speeding down the track, totally out of control!

A body in motion tends to stay in motion. Therein lies one of the keys to panic attacks. We feel that we have no real control over the situation and we literally let the situation get out of control. After all, there is that freight train coming right at me. I used to envision a panic attack as a big monster over which I had no power. I thought that monster was going to inflict on me some serious physical harm with some life-threatening conditions. That was my mind speeding along, out of control, like that freight train I envisioned.

I was sure that my fast heartbeat could lead to a heart attack, that I might die from the panic attack and that I’d stop breathing. Sometimes, my vision would get blurred, I’d feel nausea, sweating, trembling, shaking, and my muscles tightened up, I’d feel very hot or very cold, as well as tired and drained.

I eventually went to a doctor and had a physical. I was fine. A visit to a cardiologist proved that I had no heart problems. These are very important steps to take so that you can put your mind at rest about any medical concerns.


Stop panic attacks by getting a checkup and realizing they will not kill you.How to stop panic attacks? You’ll help stop them by seeing a doctor. It was valuable to learn from my doctors that a panic attack cannot stop one’s breathing. It is just physically impossible. The parasympathetic nervous system acts as a safety brake and returns the body to normal functioning whether we command it or not. In fact, we humans have numerous built-in systems that protect us and help us survive. It’s like a scale that’s tilted too heavily toward one side and then, automatically, it levels out and becomes balanced.

Thus, when a panic attack occurs, there is no real attack or attacker. There is no real threat and no real danger. The body is simply reacting to destructive thoughts with a series of very disturbing bodily sensations. That perceived freight train is not going to run over you. There will not be a damaging collision that will cause you psychological or physical damage. Now that we’ve cleared the air about what will not happen during a panic attack, let’s shrink this perceived monster down to size.


Stop panic attacks by stopping the fear.How to stop panic attacks by changing the way you perceive them? Once I realized that there was nothing physically wrong with me, by seeing several doctors, I had to change my view of a panic attack. Since no actual physical or psychological harm could come to me from such an attack, why was I seeing a panic attack as a monster? I decided to start seeing it as a disrespectful, defiant, obnoxious little child. And, whenever I felt a panic attack coming on, I pretended to talk to that bratty child by saying: “You’re having a temper tantrum again, aren’t you?”

That’s when I created my highly-productive process for overcoming panic attacks. I called it The Time Out Theory or simply The TOT System. If your child was disrespectful, defiant, and obnoxious, wouldn’t you resort to a little TIME OUT?

When my children were small, that’s exactly what we had to do sometimes. And that’s what I suggest you do with your anxiety attacks. Here are the specific steps that I suggest you follow if you feel a panic attack coming on:

1. STOP AND SCOLD – Pretend as if the attack is a bratty child and say the following: “Here you are again. When you don’t get your way, you whine. I’m not going to let you grow up to be an obnoxious adult. Your tantrums don’t scare me anymore.”
2. TIMEOUT – Pretend as if that bratty child is now going to be put in a little chair in the corner until it settles down. Say the following: “You’re going for timeout. And you will sit in that corner until you settle down.”
3. LET IT WHINE – If you don’t feel your emotions slowing down, say the following to that defiant child: “Go ahead, cry and scream louder. I can’t hear you. Kick your feet and let me see how loud you can get.”

How to stop panic attacks? By doing the above 3 steps. You’ll shrink the perceived monster down to size and give it the identity of a small, disrespectful, defiant, and obnoxious tot. What do little kids do when we encourage them, while in the corner, to be even more obnoxious? They eventually get bored and stop.

You’re literally telling your body that whatever bad symptoms you’re currently experiencing, you’re not afraid of those symptoms intensifying because you now know that no physical or psychological harm will come to you as a result of this.

In addition, by seeing that whiny child in the corner, you have physically taken the perceived panic attack out of your body and put some distance between you and it.

4. MAKE NICE – What do parents usually do when a defiant child has finally settled down? They make nice, give a big hug, and rejoice in getting things back to normal. When you feel your symptoms easing up, say the following: “I’m so proud of you for settling down. You are a well-behaved, special child and I am proud of you!”

By allowing a panic attack to run its course without fear, you are literally getting on that train that you thought was coming right at you and you’re going to take it for a ride.

The subconscious mind cannot tell the difference between something real and something imagined. Thus, the more times you follow the TOT System, the more real your perceptions will become and the more effective this process will be.

How to stop panic attacks? Use these simple ideas on a regular basis. One day you may find that you have become so good at this that you’ll be able to stop a panic attack before it even gets a chance to get going.

How to keep millennials from leaving their jobs is an important matter for a number of reasons. In a world when more and more people are changing jobs more often than in the past, it’s important to do whatever is possible to keep good employees. This is especially true with millennials.

According to the Dale Carnegie Course people, “Only 17% of employees are satisfied in their job.” And, they further stated, “45% of employees are planning on leaving their job in the next 12 months.”

That presents a very expensive proposition for most companies. They invest in training and mentoring and then a valuable employee jumps ship to go to work for another company. With millennials, the cost of turnover can be very expensive!


How to keep millennials from leaving their jobs begins with realizing that we are all very similar. Some people think that, with all of the electronics and social media activity these days, millennials are very different people. They may be in some ways. However, I feel that most people are more alike than they are different.

Surveys have shown that the main reason people leave their job voluntarily is not because of money. We think that if we throw enough money at a situation, surely it will be OK. Not if we mistreat people. The main reason people go somewhere else, is that they weren’t made to feel important.

Dale Carnegie, in the book “How to Win Friends and Influence People”, said that we all “need to feel important.” Notice he didn’t say that people “want” to feel important. He said we all “need” to feel important. And that goes for millennials. When keeping millennials from leaving their jobs is important, keep in mind that making them feel important is vital.

Here are 5 steps to help with this.


Make people feel important.How to keep millennials from leaving their jobs begins at the beginning. We need to make them feel important from the beginning, when they interview for the job. Instead of focusing on the resume, let the candidate talk about themselves first. Tell them that each individual is important to your company and you would like to first learn about the person and their background. One question will make them feel important and tell you whether they are a good candidate for your company. State the following: “I see what it says on your resume and we’ll talk more about that in a moment. First, could you just tell me about yourself?”

If they can’t talk about themselves, with some animation and enthusiasm, perhaps they’re the wrong person to come to work with your company. However, if they do feel comfortable telling you about their past, where they’re from originally, their family, and their history, you’ll get a good feeling about their potential and make them feel important at the same time. I’m taking for granted that the person interviewing is genuinely interested in other people.

In many companies, where there are more than just a few employees, most people don’t get to know a new employee for quite some time. Keeping in mind that it’s important to make them feel important, introduce the new employee to the entire staff on their first day of work. Make them feel special from the beginning.

One CEO gave me the following idea, which I thought was wonderful. On the first day of a new employee’s hire, they throw an ice cream social, at lunchtime, in honor of that new employee. They put up signs around their offices which read, “It’s (personal name) Day at (name of company). Welcome to our team!” Then, at lunchtime, they bring in vats of ice cream and the big celebration is on in the company lunchroom. How would that make you feel if it was your first day of work at a new company?


Ask for help in meeting.How to keep millennials from leaving their jobs means that we should let them take an active part in all meetings. In many companies, management does most of the talking in meetings and sometimes some of the attendees never talk. I think that is a big mistake. To make people feel important, give individual points in a meeting and then poll the audience. Say the following: “I’d like to stop and get everyone’s opinion on my last point. Whether you agree or disagree. Especially if you disagree, because I’ve been known to be wrong.” Watch your tone of voice when you do this. You want people to feel comfortable, especially if they disagree.

Don’t ask for volunteers. Simply start on one side of the room or the other and make sure everyone talks. Take notes, and not electronically. Electronically they can’t tell if you’re really taking notes. Millennials are made to feel important when we ask their opinion about a point and then take notes. They may have a valuable point.

Then, say the following: “If you were the CEO (or manager of a department) of this company, how would you lower expenses, improve productivity, or get more clients?” Then, watching your tone of voice, go around the room again. Someone may come up with a brilliant idea. When someone does, and you implement it with good results, compliment that person at the next meeting. Again, especially with millennials, you’ll make them feel important.

How to keep millennials from leaving their jobs means we’ve got to do things differently than most people do. Using hand-written note cards is very different, especially because the millennials are so used to social media and electronic communications. Keep a stack of note cards that don’t have your company logo on them. A card with a company logo makes it look as if you have many of those and you send them to a lot of people. Buy some note cards at the drug store that start blank on the inside and have a design on the cover. These are to be mailed to the home address of the millennials, not through inter-office mail. It makes a bigger impact that way. In order to make a further impact, do not put the return address on the back. Do not meter these. Use commemorative stamps. They make another impact.

I have found that one line, in your handwriting, on a note card, will mean more to these employees than a paragraph in an e-mail. These are not to be sent on birthdays or anniversaries. They’re sent “just because.” If you notice them being nice to other employees, send a note. If they close a good deal for your company, send a note.

It is said that we’ll get everything we want out of life when we help enough other people get what they want. Early on in their employment, sit down with a millennial and tell them that their personal goals are important to you. And, you want to find a way to help them achieve some of those goals. Ask them the following: “If someone were to give you an extra $500, and you couldn’t save it or pay off debts or give it to someone else, what would you do with the money?”

It could be a weekend away, a night out for dinner and a show, going camping, or whatever. In other words, what would they do to reward themselves with something they wouldn’t normally do? Once they identify that, encourage them to get a picture of that reward and to look at it the first thing each morning and the last thing each night.

When you want them to show extra effort with an important project, find a way to help them get that reward with perhaps a bonus when that project is completed successfully. This step will make them feel very important. When is the last time an employer showed interest in their personal goals?

Follow these 5 steps regularly and I believe you will find that they will make the millennials in your company feel important. That, I believe, will also cut down on the staggering cost of millennial turnover.

You can become a great leader in 5 steps and great leaders make more money than the average person. True leadership, these days, seems to be short in supply. However, if you seek to achieve greatness, then we need to focus on leadership. Not the dictatorial type that insists on others doing what they want them to do. I’m talking about leadership that makes the other person want to do what you want them to do.

I’m a graduate of The Dale Carnegie Course. I took it years ago, while I was in college, and learn a number of simple leadership traits that have helped me tremendously through the years.

From that course, and from my many years of running companies and being a professional speaker, I’ve assembled a list of 5 steps that I believe could help anyone to become a better leader.


Become a great leader by reading.Become a great leader in 5 steps by continuing your education. My college degree, in Journalism, Public Relations, and Advertising, was just the beginning of my education. My real education, over many years, has been a study diet of being a perpetual student. In the Dale Carnegie Course, I learned about Carnegie’s best-selling book “How to Win Friends and Influence People,” not only a great human relations book, but it’s also a great book on leadership.

I came to realize that it was much more valuable to read one book many times than to read many books one time only. Thus, I read that book once a month, every month, for five years – 60 times! Repetition is the mother of skill. Now those thoughts are a part of me.

Thus, whether it’s that book, or another one that you feel can help with your leadership skills, read it over and over. When you have a difficult leadership moment, go in your office and read a page in that book. The thoughts will shift your gears and help you get through the moment more productively.

Become a great leader in 5 steps by starting the morning right.Become a great leader in 5 steps by being aware of whose watching. If we are to lead others, we must be aware of the following: THE GROUP RUNS AT THE SPEED OF THE LEADER! That’s right. We can’t expect other people to follow us if we’re not showing great leadership traits. And that begins when we wake up and get our day started. Be careful what you do when you first wake up!

The first 15 minutes of each day set our mood for the whole day. May I suggest you turn off radio and television news the first things each morning? Many years ago I was a newscaster. They didn’t tell us to find positive stories. Our slogan was: “If it bleeds, it leads!” In fact, I suggest not watching the late TV news before going to sleep. Most of that is full of murder and mayhem.

Thus, I suggest you declare positive affirmations the first thing each morning and the last thing each night. Here are some suggested affirmations:

“Everything I touch prospers and succeeds. I’m a people person and a great leader. I’m a very good listener and I help people come up with their own ideas.”

Don’t analyze the affirmations. Just declare what you want and watch how that sets your mood for the whole day.

In addition to your affirmations in the morning, I suggest you read two or three pages in the Carnegie book each day. When you get through with the book, read it over again and again.


Become a great leader by listening.Become a great leader in 5 steps by becoming an exceptional listener. With so much electronics taking people’s attention these days, who is truly listening to anyone? Surveys have been made to determine why people leave their jobs voluntarily? Money is not the number one answer. The real answer is that they weren’t made to feel important. People will do more for a feeling of importance than they will do for money.

Dales Carnegie said that “people need to feel important!” Notice, he didn’t say they “want” to feel important. He said they “need” to feel important. According to the Dale Carnegie Course people, “Only 17% of employees are satisfied in their job.” And, they further stated, “45% of employees are planning on leaving their job in the next 12 months.”

This type of turnover is very expensive! I believe that a major explanation for those numbers is that most leaders fail to understand that people “need” to feel important. They think that if they throw enough money at a situation, surely people will be happy. Not so. If we mistreat people, they will eventually have had it with us and 45% plan to leave.

The main way we can make people feel important is by talking less and listening more. God gave us two ears and one mouth. Perhaps we should look at those proportions. Great leaders make people feel important by listening attentively to them.

So, when employees who report to you want to talk with you, please close your computer and put down your phone. Grab a notepad and take notes. And not electronically. On an actual notepad. And, rather than make them feel as if you want them to stop, state the following: “Tell me more.”

Then, when they have completed their point or points, ask them how they would resolve the situation. Don’t give in to the urge to give advice. A great leader let’s other people come up with their own ideas.


Being a great leader means people follow you.Become a great leader in 5 steps by making people realize that you are willing to first do what you ask them to do. I was born in Israel. My family immigrated to the U.S. when I was 9. Since its birth in 1948, Israel has become a miracle in growing its economy and becoming a world leader in technical developments. Other than the U.S., there are more companies on the NASDAQ from Israel than any other country in the world. Some 8 million people, in a very small country, are doing amazing things!

Everyone, both men and women, serve in the military in Israel. It is in that military that they learn certain leadership skills that I believe are really valuable. Military leaders do not order their soldiers to do anything they are not willing to do first. Thus, their theory of leadership in the military is “follow me!”

Thus, when people in Israel get out of the army and either start or run companies, they follow the same theory of leadership. They do not ask their employees to do anything they are not willing to do first.

They also have a way of identifying problems and solutions quickly. Executives in Israel have an open door policy. Anyone can walk in at any time. They just have to fill out a form first. That form is called “The Opportunity Form”. It has three questions: What is the problem? What is your solution? And, if it takes money, how much? This is a great way to get right to the heart of the problem and to get people to come up with the own ideas. After all, people will fight for their own ideas.


Become a great leader by praising.Become a great leader in 5 steps by showing appreciation to others. Since people will do more for a feeling of importance then they will for money, giving people proper recognition is really important when it comes to great leadership.

Carnegie said, when it comes to recognition, we should be hearty in our approbation (approval) and lavish in our praise. When an employee does something special, recognize that person in front of others, perhaps at a company meeting, and give them genuine compliments for doing a great job. You will make that person feel important and you’ll encourage others to also do a better job.

Most people only hear from their boss when they do something wrong. That’s the opposite of good leadership. Carnegie said, “Look for the good and, as much as possible, disregard the bad.” Great leaders focus on what is going right and make a big deal out of that. It doesn’t mean they don’t take care of problems. They just don’t focus on them.

Create a great sales team and profit can be tricky idea. It’s not just a matter of bringing a few people together and hoping that you’ll get great results.

In speaking before over 100 groups of CEO’s each year, I see conflicts between sales associates quite often. In an ever-changing economy, and with so much retail competition online, there is a greater emphasis to get sales in other ways and that creates stress. Stress creates inter-team conflicts.


Create a great sales team and profit begins with the realization that it is a team. However, that team is made up of individual people who each have their own personal goals. We all have our personal agendas and, in order to be successful in a sales team, there needs to be balance. If you’re running a sales team, the first step is to focus on creating productive relationships with each member of the team.

There is an old saying, “I’ll get everything I want out of life when I help enough other people get what they want.” But, how do we do that?

Sometimes trouble within a sales team can be blamed on certain business decisions that have been made by management. At other times, it can be the products that are being sold. However, I believe the problem begins with education.

Dale Carnegie, in the book “How to Win Friends and Influence People”, relates that “In ordinary schooling, there is not a single course in getting along with people.” And, where are we spending more of our time in our careers? We’re trying to get along with other people!

It’s not a product that gives us problems. If a product doesn’t work, we can either fix it, change it, or scrap it all together. However, it’s the people issues that cause most of the problems in business today. And so, most people would greatly accelerate their success if they improved their people skills.


Create a great sales team with this book.Create a great sales team and profit by reading. To help you improve your people skills, and thus increase the odds of a sales team becoming very successful, reading is critical.

Listening to an audio-book means someone else is talking to you. When you read a book, that’s YOU talking to YOU. Reading builds character and puts the right words in your mind.

However, reading several personal development books, once each, doesn’t work. That information is going in one ear and out the other. I found that it’s much more productive to read one book several times. In the area of people skills, I believe that the Carnegie book is the best personal development, people skills book ever written!

The book describes many difficult people situations and gives ideas of how to work through them. Here are some of the basic points from this book:

Let the other person do a great deal of the talking.

Look at situations from the other person’s point of view.

Never tell the other person that he or she is wrong.

When we’re wrong, admit it quickly and emphatically.

Use the phrases “Tell me more” and “I need your help”.

I felt that this book was so valuable that I read it over and over, once a month, every month, for 5 years. I read it 60 times. Now it is a part of me.

If you’re running a sales team, I suggest you get copies of the Carnegie book for everyone and ask them to keep it on their desk. That way they’ll be reminded of this important book every day.

Dale Carnegie said that the greatest honor we pay anyone is RAPT attention – complete, total attention. That helps resolve many conflicts. How little of that is there these days? With so much electronics, who is paying attention to anyone?

Carnegie further stated that everyone needs to feel important. Notice he didn’t say that we “want” to feel important. He said that we “need” to feel important. RAPT attention makes people feel important.

Thus, when there are conflicts within a sales team, and people state an opinion that may be different than ours, rather than criticizing, listen attentively to that person and say “tell me more.” Take notes, and not electronically. That way they can’t tell if we’re taking notes. Use a notepad to take notes. That will make the other person realize that you’re really listening.

It’s an 8-week course, costing about $2,000, and worth its weight in gold. From their website, here is the description of the course:

You’ll be better equipped to perform as a persuasive communicator, problem-solver, and focused leader. And you’ll develop a take-charge attitude initiated with confidence and enthusiasm.”

I took the course while I was in college and I believe it was instrumental in my eventually becoming a successful professional speaker.


Create a great sales team with productive meetings.Create a great sales team and profit by having great meetings! A great team-building exercise is to have weekly meetings with everyone on the sales team, with a specific agenda.

Discuss what didn’t work last week and then go over what did work. Dale Carnegie suggested the following: “Look at the good and embellish it. And, as much as possible, disregard the bad.”

Whatever we focus on expands!

Make a big deal out of any achievements by any members of the sales team. Make people feel important with compliments for any achievements. Ask everyone for suggestions as to how the entire team can improve.

Read a page or two in the Carnegie book and then discuss the ideas with everyone. Suggest to everyone that they read just one or two pages in the book every day. Let’s keep those valuable ideas in the forefront of everyone’s mind on a regular basis.


Create a great sales team with 'thank you' notes.Create a great sales team and profit is an idea that can be achieved by going back to old ideas. With so much of our communications done electronically these days, let’s promote within the sales team an old idea that can definitely help with more sales. Texts and emails are cold forms of communications. This is a warm idea that goes a long way to connect with people in a very special way!

It’s the hand-written note. We don’t have to write two or three paragraphs. I’m talking about one or two lines on a hand-written note being more touching than two paragraphs in an e-mail.

Don’t use note cards with your company logo. If you use those, people may think that you send those to a lot of people. When you start with a note-card that’s blank on the inside, the recipient may think that you picked it up just for them. Use no return address on the back of the envelope. That way they’ll have to open it up immediately since they won’t know who sent the card.

If you’re sending the card to an executive, write the word “Personal” on the lower left-hand corner of the envelope. Do not meter these cards. Use stamps. But, not just any stamps. Use commemorative stamps. They look different.

Encourage the sales team to send hand-written note cards often and for any logical reason. These can be in response to an order or when we simply have a nice conversation with a customer by phone. A card can also be just to tell a customer that you appreciate their business.

There you have it. A few simple ideas that can help you create a great sales team!

Goals don't need to be uphill.

Goals are important. However, too often, we either don’t identify them clearly or we set them so high it seems as if we’re going uphill.

When I spoke before a great group in Canada, I was at the Calgary Golf and Country Club in Calgary. Since I was there, I took the picture above from the back patio of the club. I learned the following on the club’s web site: “Established in 1897, the Club bought land on an isolated bend of the Elbow River in 1909 and began play in 1911.

The foundation of today’s course was laid out by the Scottish designer Willie Park, Jr. in 1922 and restored to his classic standard in a 2005-207 major renovation.


I’ll admit to you that I do not play golf and do not know much about the game or the rules. However, the reason I took the picture above was that it shows a beautiful flat putting green and then it shows people hitting golf balls uphill.

I realize there are hills on golf courses. This one just seemed steeper to me and it’s as if players were being challenged to hit certain marks up the hill. Those marks being the white circles in the picture, up the hill.


I got to thinking about the correlation of that golf course to us setting goals in life. As a result, too many times we set goals that are so far ahead that we don’t believe them. Thus, we don’t take action.

That might be the golf shot all the way up the hill in Calgary.

What if we broke our goals down to believable portions? Perhaps trying to hit the closest uphill mark in the picture above? Then, when we hit that, it might give us the confidence to hit the next mark up the hill.

Thus, if you have an important goal for this year, and you haven’t taken action, why not break it down into achievable and believable portions? As a result, you will take action on the first step and see what happens.

This could give your goals a lift!

Positive Moments Can Be Beneficial!

Positive moments can be beneficial when we focus on them instead of what’s not currently working. What we focus on expands! Thus, we have to be careful what we think about. It’s easy to focus on the negatives and most people do. Champion focus on positive moments!


When I spoke in Chicago, I went by Northwestern University in Evanston. That visit was a case of nostalgia. I spent my 1965 summer, between my junior and senior years in high school, at the National High School Speech Institute at the university. The picture above of Northwestern is from

That was an amazing summer as I worked in the radio and television studios of the university and got to know high school students from all over the country who were part of the program. Keeping in mind that positive moments can be beneficial, those were positive moments.


Something else that I remember with great fondness is what my uncle in New York sent my brother and me in 1956 when we lived in Israel. That was just before my family immigrated to the United States and my uncle sent us a couple of yellow T-shirts.

That’s me in the picture, after we arrived in America, when I was 9, along with my mother, in February of 1957.

I was wearing the T-shirt, which was from the old New York Giants baseball team. You’ll notice the old-fashioned phone, when it was wired into the wall.



We all get depressed from time to time and I certainly do. Perhaps, at those moments, we should think back to simpler times that meant a lot to us, were positive experiences, and made us feel good.

That summer at Northwestern was very special. The feeling of wearing the T-shirt from America to school was very special. Those were positive times that I need to treasure in my memory bank and bring to mind when I feel down.


What if we made a list of 10 moments from our past that made us feel special and that we cherish? And, when we feel depressed, what if we took out that list and brought those moments from the past to the forefront?

Positive moments can be beneficial. Thinking about them could change our momentum and, for a moment, put the past ahead of us.

Peacefulness should be sought out.

Peacefulness is important to all of us. When I was a newscaster on a radio station in Tulsa, Oklahoma, while in high school in 1965, there was a peaceful song on the radio. “The Sound of Silence” by Simon & Garfunkel, had just been released. It was a beautiful and soothing melody.


I was reminded of that song when I arrived to speak for a group at the Sooke Harbour House, about an hour’s drive from the airport on Victoria Island in British Columbia.

Hence, if you look closely at the picture I took above, you can see a totem pole standing guard to make sure no one disturbs the peacefulness of this place. As a result, I was struck by the beauty and the majestic silence that I found there. Other than the harbor water gently lapping onto the rocks, it was total silence. This was simply amazing!


As the line from the Simon & Garfunkel song says, “As the vision that was planted in my brain, still remains, within the sound of silence.”

Did you ever notice that there’s so much noise in our everyday lives: TV sets are no, people talking on the phone, traffic, music blaring into headphones.

Thus, it’s almost a shock to the system to stand there at the Sooke Harbour House, overlooking the bay, and hearing the sound of silence. Maybe we should make a conscious effort to find such a place sometimes and touch the sound of silence.

Focus success and that will be a shortcut to greater success.

When we focus success, that can help us reach our most important goals and lead us to even greater success! That concept was brought to mind when I spoke for a group at the magnificent Brasada Ranch, about 30 minutes east of Bend, Oregon.


Brasada is much more than a ranch. There is a spa, a golf course, bicycle riding paths and, yes, there are horses for trail rides.

While watching some of the horses at Brasada, I got to wondering why some horses have blinders on? Like the picture above from


Horses have their eyes on the side of their heads. So, they have peripheral vision. As a result, they can end up running off course unless they are made to remain focused. Blinders are often used when horses pull wagons or carriages.

I wonder if that same concept might help us humans when it comes to accomplishing important goals? Too many times, and I’m as guilty as anyone, we multi-task and don’t apply our full energy to any one thing. When we focus on success, more success comes to us.


These days, we can be distracted by our cell phones, texting, and social media.

If that is a problem for you, as it can be for me, may I suggest that you declare the following daily affirmation: I always do the most valuable thing first and quickly.

Declare that the first thing each morning and the last thing each night, for at least 90 days, and watch what happens. Just for clarity, I don’t want to “bridle” your enthusiasm. I just want to focus it!

Attitude Speaker and Goals as Relating to Roulette.

Attitude speaker and goals are two important things to me. I also realize that our attitude toward our goals is very important. Thus, we cannot gamble with that. It’s important to identify our goals, in writing, break them down, and take action.

I noticed an attitude lesson when I spoke in Las Vegas and walked through the casino at the Mirage Hotel. I saw the roulette game and took the above picture of it.


Wikipedia explains that “Roulette is a casino game named after the French word meaning little wheel. Players may choose to place bets on either a single number or a range of numbers.

The colors are red or black, or whether the number is odd or even, or if the numbers are high (19-36) or low (1-18).

No matter which way you look at it, playing roulette is a gamble. We’re hoping the ball lands on the right number so we can win.


When we don’t write down our important goals, we’re gambling that things will work out the way we want.

As an attitude speaker, I learned that we’ve got to change our attitude about our goals and realize that “for things to change, we’ve got to change.” It’s not the economy. It’s not the weather and it’s not good breaks. It’s US and our attitude.

If you haven’t already done so, I encourage you to write down your 5 most important goals for the next 5 years. Then write down the steps you will take in the next 12 months and the next 30 days to help accomplish those goals.

Let’s make sure that the figurative roulette wheel in your life has the ball landing on the right number! That’s a productive way to take control of your power!

Attitude means everything. It can be adjusted.

Attitude means everything and it needs to be adjusted on a regular basis. I learned an important lesson about adjusting our attitude when I recently spoke in St. Louis and stopped by the famous Gateway Arch.


According to Wikipedia, “The Gateway Arch is a 630-foot monument in St. Louis. Clad in stainless steel and built in the form of an inverted, weighted catenary arch, it is the world’s tallest arch. It’s also the tallest man-made monument in the Western Hemisphere, and Missouri’s tallest building.

Built as a monument to the westward expansion of the United States, and officially dedicated to ‘the American people,’ it is the centerpiece of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial and has become an internationally recognized symbol of St. Louis, as well as a popular tourist attraction.”

The Gateway Arch took two and a half years to construct and was opened to the public in 1967. It is located at the site of where St. Louis was founded, on the bank of the Mississippi River.

I’ve had the amazing experience of riding the unique elevator system in the arch that takes visitors to the observation deck at the top. Most noteworthy is the bird’s eye view of the city of St. Louis that one gets at the top. Especially relevant is the fact that the building of The Arch was an engineering marvel! I would guess that, with the builders of this incredible monument, they would have agreed that attitude means everything!


Most people take a four-minute tram in either one of the legs to get to the top of The Arch. Each tram is a chain of eight cylindrical, five-seat compartments, that swing like Ferris-wheel cars as they go up and down.

Thus, in order to keep the passengers level, these compartments make a series of adjustments as they move up and down The Arch. In reality, those adjustments are similar to the changes that happen in each of our lives.

Unexpected things happen to all of us, good or bad, and we have to react. Therefore, if we react with a bad mood, that could affect the outcome negatively. Thus, it’s not what happens, it’s how we react and attitude means everything. Hence, Champions have bad moments. However, they just react more quickly and look for any positive step they could take to make things better.

Just like the tram compartments at the St. Louis Arch, life is a series of adjustments. Hence, if these adjustments are difficult for you, the following affirmation may help.


“I look for the good in any difficult situation and look for a productive step I can can take immediately!”
