WHY LEADERSHIP IS SO IMPORTANT

Why leadership is so important

Why leadership is so important is a topic that’s very important when it comes to getting ahead and being successful. Without leadership, we are relegated to following those who are leaders – whether we want to or not. We usually have to follow their path and our goals are put on the back burner. Some think that certain people are naturally-born leaders. That may be true in some cases. However, I think that leadership traits can be learned by anyone who seeks to achieve greatness and take their life to a great new level.

WHY LEADERSHIP IS SO IMPORTANT MEANS WE LEAD OR FOLLOW

Why leadership is so importantThere is no middle ground in life. Even if we think we’re on the right track, if we’re not moving, we’re going to get run over. When it comes to leadership, we’re subconsciously making a choice every day. We either make the extra effort to lead or we automatically get relegated to following someone else. And, if that someone else is not leading us in a good direction, we won’t be happy when we get to the destination.

Since we are the total sum of the five people with whom we spend the most time, it’s important to take mental inventory and ask ourselves if we want to follow them. If where these people are in their lives is not where we want to go, we need to make a change. Decide to become a leader and follow the road that leads to where you want to go. Write down your goals, break them down into believable pieces, and then declare the following affirmation the first thing each morning and the last thing each night:

I am a talented, capable, strong leader. I have defined my goals in writing and am creating my great future.

Don’t analyze these affirmations. Just state them, out loud, the first thing each morning and the last thing each night. Watch what happens in the next few months!

THE IMPORTANT THING IS TO GET STARTED!

Why leadership is so importantWhy leadership is so important takes many steps. Every great achievement begins with a first step. So, whether you think you have some leadership abilities, or none at all, we can start with a small step TODAY! Make a list of 5 things you could do to show leadership in your life. Perhaps you need to start a modest exercise program, improve your diet, pay more attention to your most important relationships, read a personal development book, or whatever.

Choose one of those subjects, or another, and take an initial step today! In most case, the hardest step in any important goal is the first one. After that, inertia often takes over and its easier to keep going. It’s like the old-fashioned trains with the big metal wheels on the engines. It took quite a bit of effort to get them going down the track. However, once they got going, it took quite a bit of effort to stop the train. That’s momentum.

So, if you choose to show leadership by starting a modest exercise program, how about a walk around the block? That’s a start! Keep doing that for a number of days and you may feel like walking around two blocks. Eventually, you may be using a treadmill for a half hour a day that will get you in great shape and help you lose calories.

LEADERSHIP MEANS HAVING A CHAMPIONSHIP ATTITUDE

Why leadership is so importantWhy leadership is so important is often based on a great attitude. Great leaders do not generally wake up with a great attitude every day. They have challenges like everyone else. In fact, because they are leaders, their challenges are often bigger than the challenges of followers. However, leaders do what has to be done, when it has to be done, whether they feel like it or not.

Leaders get upset and depressed like everyone else. However, they realize that they cannot afford to stay in a rut for too long. The price for that is just too expensive. Thus, they have developed techniques to get themselves back up quickly. One way that I find helps me, when I’m down, is to declare the following affirmation on a daily basis:

I always do the most valuable thing first and quickly!

We most always have choices when it comes to getting things done. Do we do item A or B? Let’s say that A is something easier that we want to get off our list today. However, item B is more valuable to our future. Leaders are leaders because they have gotten in the habit of doing the most valuable thing first, even if they don’t want to. When you declare the above affirmation regularly, you’ll get in the habit of doing the most valuable thing first and you’ll be developing leadership.

You might want to make the following sign, in big type on 8 ½ x 11 paper, and produce it on bright yellow paper:

Every Day I Play Like a Champion!

Laminate it and post it where you can see it every day. Then, each day, just touch the sign. The impact on your attitude is instant! Leadership comes from developing an inner feeling that you do indeed play like a champion every day!

START EACH DAY WITH AN ADVANTAGE

Why leadership is so importantWhy leadership is so important is highlighted by how leaders start each day. The first 15 minutes of each day will set our mood for the entire day. Leaders realize that and thus they do something valuable with that time. They actually begin their day the night before by writing down the 5 most important tasks they need to tackle the next day. They do so in the order of their importance. This is like a blueprint for a house. It’s a blueprint for the next day’s productivity. Since the brain does not turn off during the night, it might work on some of these thoughts and give you some good ideas for the next day when you wake up.

Leaders don’t watch television news before they go to sleep. Having been a newscaster in the past, I remember that we were not told to go find positive stories to put on the news. Murder and mayhem was part of every newscast. Thus, if we watch that before we go to sleep, that sets up negative thoughts in our minds as we fall asleep.

Then, when you wake up, may I suggest that you not turn on television news, listen to the radio, or read the paper. Once again, much of that is negative. Instead, why not declare positive affirmations, such as the ones above, the first thing each morning. This step would be good to repeat just before you fall asleep at night.

After the affirmations, may I suggest you listen to a positive audio message. You can find some of these on YouTube. Next, I suggest reading one page in either or both of the following books that I recommend: How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie or Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill.

After that, I suggest a little exercise every day, putting a dollar bill in an envelope, and looking at a picture of your next reward. Since credit cards don’t seem real to the mind, it makes an impact when we handle cash and save it. Getting a picture of your next reward will keep you motivated.

FIND A MENTOR AND FOLLOW THEIR GUIDANCE

Why leadership is so importantWhy leadership is so important is evidenced by the fact that most leaders were once followers. In fact, a good leader is at first a good follower. Identify someone who has done what you want to do and ask them for advice. People are usually honored when you ask them for advice. Tell that person that you admire their achievements and would like to emulate their success.

Ask them what steps they would take to get to where they are. Follow their guidance and report back regularly. If something doesn’t work out, ask them what they would have done differently if they were you.

This is a really valuable step. Most great leaders do not waste time trying to reinvent the wheel. They find someone who already has the wheel they want, ask for advice, and follow the steps they took. Write letters to famous people you admire, tell them why you admire them, and ask for advice. What if some of them respond and what if some of them may want to help with your success?

To become a great leader, we can take one step today and another one tomorrow. Follow these ideas and see what happens. I believe that we all, including you, have greatness within us! I think we can all accomplish incredible things! Start showing leadership today and watch what that will do for your future!

5 WAYS TO MAKE DECISIONS QUICKLY!

5 Ways to Make Decisions Quickly is a matter of clarity.

5 ways to make decisions quickly is a process that will take you to a whole new level of success. There’s a theory that leaders make decisions quickly and change their minds slowly. Most everyone else makes decisions slowly and they change their minds quickly. The first thing to realize is that most decisions are not life and death. And, yet, most people spend a lot of time making decisions that should have taken minutes to make. If you find yourself agonizing about decisions, here are some steps you can take to help you become a leader when it comes to decisions.

1. 5 WAYS TO MAKE DECISIONS QUICKLY BEGINS BY CONTROLLING WORRY

Making Decisions Quickly means stop worrying.Using these 5 ways to make decisions quickly has a great emotional value. One of the negative effects of making decisions slowly is the emotional price that is paid. Not making decisions can often result in worry and anxiety. Worry takes the shape of thoughts in our minds that go in circles. As long as we allow that to happen, making decisions becomes very difficult. Thus, we can worry and put off making decisions. That can often lead us to loss. We can lose our health, important relationships, career opportunities, and more. Make decisions quickly by learning to control worry.

Dale Carnegie wrote a very productive book that has helped many people to overcome worry, and thus make better decisions, more quickly. It’s called “How to Stop Worrying and Start Living.” Carnegie’s theory was that we should live in “Day-Tight Compartments”. He said to think about each day being a room with two doors. One door represents yesterday and that door is locked permanently. The other door leads to tomorrow. That one doesn’t open until midnight. Until that point, we’re living in this “Day-Tight Compartment”. In other words, there was nothing that could be done about yesterday and we could do nothing about tomorrow, until midnight.

Then, concerning something we’re worried about, Carnegie suggests writing down a clear description of what is worrying us. Then write down what is the worst that could happen. The next step was to write down a clear plan of what you would do if the worst were to happen. This idea is a great way to clarify a situation, which can help us make decisions more quickly.

2. THE BENJAMIN FRANKLIN ROUTINE

Making Decisions Quickly is helped by Benjamin Franklin.5 ways to make decisions quickly continues by paying attention to Benjamin Franklin. He developed a wonderful process to help people make decisions.

He suggested getting a piece of paper and drawing a line across, about an inch from the top of the paper. Then he said to draw a line down the middle of the page. In the middle, at the top, write down the decision to be made. At the top left, write the word “PROS” and the word “CONS” at the top right. You’re about to let Ben help you make a decision more easily.

Write down all of the reasons you should consider in making this decision, both for and against. Since our emotions vary from day to day, it is best if you spend a few minutes every day for five days to do this. Be as clear as possible in your written reasons, on both sides of the page. Pretend as if, after five days, you were to give this paper to a stranger and they would make the decision for you. Thus, you would have to be very honest about the pros and cons.

This is another way to get thoughts out of our minds and onto paper. Decisions become easier when we see them defined clearly in writing and we look for reasons to go ahead and reasons not to proceed.

3. IDENTIFY THE 5 MOST IMPORTANT THINGS EACH DAY

Making Decisions Quickly is a matter of priorities.5 ways to make decisions quickly includes being well organized. If our days are not well organized, and we get pulled in various directions at any given moment, I believe that keeps us from making decisions quickly. When there are a lot of things on our mind, how can we focus on one important point and make a sensible decision? Clutter, on our desk and in our minds, can keep us from making decisions quickly.

Napoleon Hill, in the book “Think and Grow Rich”, tells the story about Andrew Carnegie and his building of the United States Steel Corporation many years ago. In 1901 he hired Charles Schwab to become President of the company. Schwab asked a business consultant named Ivy Lee to give him an idea that would make him and his management more organized and more productive.

Lee suggested that, at the end of each day, Schwab should write down the 5 most important and valuable things he needed to do the following day, in the order of their importance. Then, the next morning, he was to focus on item #1 until it was completed. If he was distracted, he was to come back to item #1 as soon as possible. When that was completed, he was to go to item #2. If all he completed in any given day were items 1 through 3, at least those were the most important things.

At the end of the day, he was to make a new list for the following day. If he’d completed the first three items, item #4 might become #1 the next day. He might have considered that something else was more important the next day. Either way, there was great focus at the beginning of each day.

I believe this process would help us stay focused on the most valuable things each day and limit our confusion. Being focused can only help in making better decisions because we have uncluttered our minds.

4. ASK FOR HELP

Making Decisions Quickly means asking experts.Whatever decisions we make, in most cases someone else has made a similar decision. I find that most people allow ego to get in the way and they don’t ask for help. When you need to make an important decision, look for someone who might be an expert in that field and ask them for advice. We honor people when we ask their help and seek their advice. Let someone else feel good by helping you with the decision.

Check in your community to see who is an expert in the area for which you need advice with your decision. Perhaps identify more than one person. What if you were to send a note to three influential people and ask them all for advice with your decision? Give them the facts that deal with the situation and your options to take action. This can clarify your situation and you’ll be getting the benefit of experience from an expert. This would be advice that is coming from a non-partial third party who’ll be able to be more objective about your situation.

I was born in Israel. My family immigrated to the U.S. when I was 9. I eventually asked an uncle of mine, who had also immigrated to America and was originally from Vienna, Austria, why more people in the U.S. are not successful. His simple answer was glaring. He said, “They won’t ask for help.”

5. IF IT’S A BUSINESS DECISION, SURVEY YOUR EMPLOYEES AND CUSTOMERS

Making Decisions Quickly means asking customers and employees for help.5 ways to make decisions quickly is effective when you survey people. If you run a business that has customers, and the decision could affect your customers, ask them for their opinion. That could help you make decisions quickly.

Put together a simple survey and ask your customers for input. Perhaps you can offer a discount on a product or some other incentive to motivate them to complete your survey. Their input could be very valuable.

As noted above, when asking experts for their advice with your decision, you’ll make your customers feel important when you ask for their input. They may also become better customers if they feel that they had something to do with a product improvement or a change in your services.

Your employees can also be a great asset when it comes to decisions. Too many CEO’s feel that they have to make all of the decisions. Employees actually grow when we allow them to give us input when it comes to decisions. And, if they help you with ideas during difficult times, they will most likely buy into any changes that need to be made if they were asked for input.

If you send out any kind of company publication, and you’ve instigated a customer or an employees’ input in a decision, give that person recognition in your company publication. Everyone loves to see their name in lights.

Remember, leaders make decisions quickly and change their minds slowly. By implementing some of the above ideas, I believe you’ll be able to make decisions more quickly and enhance your leadership abilities.

HOW ARE GREAT LEADERS GREAT MOTIVATORS?

How are Great Leaders Great Motivators?

How are great leaders great motivators? Great leaders gravitate to positions of authority, and make more money, because people want to follow them. They know how to motivate people and get them to want to help them achieve an important goal. But, leaders are not born that way. They don’t automatically know how to be great leaders and great motivators.

If you wish to become a great leader, who’s a great motivator, here are 5 steps to take:

1. HOW ARE GREAT LEADERS GREAT MOTIVATORS? BY BEING GENUINELY INTERESTED IN OTHER PEOPLE?

Great leaders are great motivators because they are genuinely interested in others. How are great leaders great motivators? Dale Carnegie, in the best-selling book “How to Win Friends and Influence People”, said that the people who cause the most harm in society are the ones who aren’t interested in anyone but themselves. He also said that the people who are genuinely interested in others seem to have the doors of opportunity opening up ahead of them. Carnegie further stated that everybody’s favorite topic is THEM! It’s not you; it’s not me; it’s THEM.

So, a great leader gets to know people by letting them talk about themselves. My dearly departed Jewish mother was genuinely interested in other people and she let them talk about themselves. She said that everybody’s got a story and she felt she could learn something interesting from everybody she met.

How are great leaders great motivators? They realize that their future success is dependent on their ability to create great relationships. My mother created them in minutes by asked everybody the same Five Questions:

Where are you from originally?

(If not from here) What brought you here?

(If from here) Have you lived here all your life?

Do you have a family?

(If you don’t know) What do you do?

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

In my many years of being a speaker, with many events for groups of CEO’s worldwide, I’m amazed with how many people don’t really know the people they’ve been working with for many years. They can’t answer the five questions above. When I get them to sit down for coffee with those employees, and ask these questions, their leadership status goes way up because they’re being genuinely interested and letting people talk about their favorite topic – THEM.

2. THEY DON’T CRITICIZE, CONDEMN, OR COMPLAIN!

Great leaders are great motivators because they don't criticize, condemn, or complain. How are great leaders great motivators? They don’t criticize, condemn, or complain. That piece of important leadership training is at the heart of Chapter 1 of the Carnegie book. He said that, if you wanted to put the nails in the coffin of any relationship, go ahead and criticize, condemn, or complain.

The natural instinct is to do exactly that. However, great leaders realize that this is a huge roadblock when it comes to motivating other people. They also realize that the most precious thing anyone of us has is our self-image, the way we see ourselves. When we criticize other people, we’re tearing down their self-image. This is especially harmful when we do so in front of other people. That may be the moment they decide that they eventually want to work somewhere else.

Instead of criticizing, condemning, or complaining, how about stating the following when someone who reports to you makes a mistake or does something they shouldn’t have done: “What did we learn from this situation and what do you think we could do differently next time?” That statement will let someone save face and will teach them something productive when they come up with a better direction for the future.

Another productive step would be to go for an entire week without complaining about anything to anyone! Just do this and I think you’ll be amazed with how motivating that will be for the people around you.

3. THEY LET THE OTHER PERSON DO MOST OF THE TALKING

Great leaders are great motivators because they let the other person do a great deal of the talking.Great leaders are great motivators because they get other people to do more of the talking and to come up with their own ideas. After all, people will fight for their own ideas! God gave us two ears and one mouth. Maybe we should listen twice as much as we talk. The reason more people don’t become great leaders is that they feel they know it all and want to tell other people what to do. Who’s the only person growing here?

If you’re a leader of people, make sure you don’t monopolize meetings. Great leaders know that they will motivate others much better when they make the people around them shine. Thus, if you want to motivate others to help you with an idea, give the idea and then say the following: “I’d like to stop and get everyone’s opinion of my idea, whether you agree or disagree. Especially if you disagree, because I’ve been known to be wrong.”

I’m taking for granted that you’re genuinely interested in other people. If you’re not, don’t do this. Also, watch your tone of voice. We want people to feel safe talking in meetings, especially if they disagree. Then, don’t ask for volunteers. Simply start on one side of the room or the other. Then, when people comment, take notes, and not electronically. When we take notes, when someone else is talking, we honor them. What if they come up with a great idea? If possible, let them run with that idea. As I stated, people will fight for their own idea.

4. WHEN THEY’RE WRONG, THEY ADMIT IT QUICKLY AND EMPHATICALLY!

Great leaders are great motivators because they admit mistakes quickly.Great leaders are great motivators because, when they’re wrong, they admit it quickly and emphatically. It shows that they are human and that they’re open to learning. The majority of people will defend themselves, waste a lot of time, and not help improve the moment. The statement, “I was wrong!” can go a long way to show great leadership and to motivate other people to help you move ahead.

I was born in Israel. There, in company meetings, leaders do not tolerate people defending themselves when things go wrong. To them, defending is not acceptable. They believe it’s a big waste of time. They feel that, if you were wrong, admit it quickly and tell everyone what you learned in the process. They feel that there is great value in the lesson rather than beat a dead horse. That concept is taught from the leaders in Israeli companies and passed along to all team members.

5. THEY HELP THEIR TEAM MEMBERS IDENTIFY THEIR PERSONAL “WHY”

Great leaders are great motivators because they help others achieve their rewards. How are great leaders great motivators? Because they help the people who report to them identify an exciting next reward. Most people, who are in positions of authority, usually look at what others can do for them. It’s like wanting the heat out of the fireplace before putting the wood in. Great leaders who are great motivators look at things from another perspective. They look at it from the other person’s point of view and figure out what that person wants. The old saying is I’ll get everything I want out of life when I help enough other people get what they want.

How are great leaders great motivators? They start with identifying their own “Why” first. This would be something frivolous that you would do for YOU in the next few months, a short-term reward. The mind gets motivated by rewards. This is not something for anyone else, not for your family. It’s for YOU! You’ll do more for everybody when you do more for you! It could be a weekend away to somewhere special. Your personal budget for this might be $2,000 or $3,000. Get a picture of this reward, about the size of a business card, laminate it, and look at it the first thing each morning and the last thing each night.

Help the people who report to you do the same thing. Their budget will be less than yours, perhaps $500. Make sure they get a picture, laminate it, and start looking at it each day. Make a note of the rewards each one of your direct reports wants and look for ways to help them get that reward. This is motivation at the very core, what’s in the heart of the people you want to motivate.

6. RAISE YOUR ENTHUSIASM LEVEL!

Great leaders are great motivators because they show enthusiasm. How are great leaders great motivators? Napoleon Hill, in the famous book “Think and Grow Rich”, said that enthusiasm is the secret sauce that raises some people to a higher level of success than most people.

The word comes from the Greek and it means “God within”. It is the spark that makes other people want to follow you. We like following people who have some fire in their hearts and excitement in their spirit. As the saying goes, genius is always accompanied by ENTHUSIASM!

If you don’t feel like being enthusiastic, keep in mind that the group runs in the speed of the leader. Thus, if you want to be a great leader and a great motivator, you need to show enthusiasm. If you don’t have that now, may I suggest you declare the following affirmation the first thing every morning and the last thing each night? Those are the two times your subconscious mind is most open to suggestion.

WHY ARE GREAT LEADERS GREAT MOTIVATORS DAILY AFFIRMATION

“Everything I touch prospers and succeeds. I’m a great leader and a great motivator. I have lots of enthusiasm every day!”

HOW TO KEEP MILLENNIALS FROM LEAVING THEIR JOBS

How to keep millennials from leaving their jobs.

How to keep millennials from leaving their jobs is an important matter for a number of reasons. In a world when more and more people are changing jobs more often than in the past, it’s important to do whatever is possible to keep good employees. This is especially true with millennials.

According to the Dale Carnegie Course people, “Only 17% of employees are satisfied in their job.” And, they further stated, “45% of employees are planning on leaving their job in the next 12 months.”

That presents a very expensive proposition for most companies. They invest in training and mentoring and then a valuable employee jumps ship to go to work for another company. With millennials, the cost of turnover can be very expensive!

ARE THEY DIFFERENT THAN OLDER EMPLOYEES?

How to keep millennials from leaving their jobs begins with realizing that we are all very similar. Some people think that, with all of the electronics and social media activity these days, millennials are very different people. They may be in some ways. However, I feel that most people are more alike than they are different.

Surveys have shown that the main reason people leave their job voluntarily is not because of money. We think that if we throw enough money at a situation, surely it will be OK. Not if we mistreat people. The main reason people go somewhere else, is that they weren’t made to feel important.

Dale Carnegie, in the book “How to Win Friends and Influence People”, said that we all “need to feel important.” Notice he didn’t say that people “want” to feel important. He said we all “need” to feel important. And that goes for millennials. When keeping millennials from leaving their jobs is important, keep in mind that making them feel important is vital.

Here are 5 steps to help with this.

1. MAKE MILLENNIALS FEEL IMPORTANT

Make people feel important. How to keep millennials from leaving their jobs begins at the beginning. We need to make them feel important from the beginning, when they interview for the job. Instead of focusing on the resume, let the candidate talk about themselves first. Tell them that each individual is important to your company and you would like to first learn about them and their background. One question will make them feel important and tell you whether they are a good candidate for your company. State the following: “I see what it says on your resume and we’ll talk more about that in a moment. First, could you just tell me about yourself?”

If they can’t talk about themselves, with some animation and enthusiasm, perhaps they’re the wrong person to come to work with your company. However, if they do feel comfortable telling you about their past, where they’re from originally, their family, and their history, you’ll get a good feeling about their potential and make them feel important at the same time. I’m taking for granted that the person interviewing is genuinely interested in other people.

2. INTRODUCE MILLENNIALS TO EVERYONE ON THEIR FIRST DAY AT WORK

Keep millennials from leaving their jobs by making them feel important. How to keep millennials from leaving their jobs is reinforced on their first day of work. In many companies, where there are more than just a few employees, most people don’t get to know a new employee for quite some time. Keeping in mind that it’s important to make them feel important, introduce the new employee to the entire staff on their first day of work. Make them feel special from the beginning.

One CEO gave me the following idea, which I thought was wonderful. On the first day of a new employee’s hire, they throw an ice cream social, at lunchtime, in honor of that new employee. They put up signs around their offices which read, “It’s (persons name) Day at (name of company). Welcome to our team!” Then, at lunchtime, they bring in vats of ice cream and the big celebration is on in the company lunchroom. How would that make you feel if it was your first day of work at a new company?

3. ASK THEM FOR HELP

Ask for help in meeting. How to keep millennials from leaving their jobs means that we should let them take an active part in all meetings. In many companies, management does most of the talking in meetings and sometimes some of the attendees never talk. I think that is a big mistake. To make people feel important, give individual points in a meeting and then poll the audience. Say the following: “I’d like to stop and get everyone’s opinion on my last point. Whether you agree or disagree. Especially if you disagree, because I’ve been known to be wrong.” Watch your tone of voice when you do this. You want people to feel comfortable, especially if they disagree.

Don’t ask for volunteers. Simply start on one side of the room or the other and make sure everyone talks. Take notes, and not electronically. Electronically they can’t tell if you’re really taking notes. Millennials are made to feel important when we ask their opinion about a point and then take notes. They may have a valuable point.

Then, say the following: “If you were the CEO (or manager of a department) of this company, how would you lower expenses, improve productivity, or get more clients?” Then, watching your tone of voice, go around the room again. Someone may come up with a brilliant idea. When someone does, and you implement it with good results, compliment that person at the next meeting. Again, especially with millennials, you’ll make them feel important.

4. MAIL THEM HAND-WRITTEN CARDS

Keeping millennials from leaving their jobs is helped with hand-written notes.

How to keep millennials from leaving their jobs means we’ve got to do things differently than most people do. Using hand-written note cards is very different, especially because the millennials are so used to social media and electronic communications. Keep a stack of note cards that don’t have your company logo on them. A card with a company logo makes it look as if you have many of those and you send them to a lot of people. Buy some note cards at the drug store that start blank on the inside and have a design on the cover. These are to be mailed to the home address of the millennials, not through inter-office mail. It makes a bigger impact that way. In order to make a further impact, do not put the return address on the back. Do not meter these. Use commemorative stamps. They make another impact.

I have found that one line, in your handwriting, on a note card, will mean more to these employees than a paragraph in an e-mail. These are not to be sent on birthdays or anniversaries. They’re sent “just because.” If you notice them being nice to other employees, send a note. If they close a good deal for your company, send a note.

5. HELP THEM IDENTIFY THEIR PERSONAL “WHY”

Keep millennials from leaving their jobs by identifying a reward for them. How to keep millennials from leaving their jobs can be enhanced by helping them identify their next reward. It is said that we’ll get everything we want out of life when we help enough other people get what they want. Early on in their employment, sit down with a millennial and tell them that their personal goals are important to you. And, you want to find a way to help them achieve some of those goals. Ask them the following: “If someone were to give you an extra $500, and you couldn’t save it or pay off debts or give it to someone else, what would you do with the money?”

It could be a weekend away, a night out for dinner and a show, going camping, or whatever. In other words, what would they do to reward themselves with something they wouldn’t normally do? Once they identify that, encourage them to get a picture of that reward and to look at it the first thing each morning and the last thing each night. Have them post that picture in their office, or at their work station, so you’ll constantly know about their next reward.

When you want them to show extra effort with an important project, find a way to help them get that reward with perhaps a bonus when that project is completed successfully. This step will make them feel very important. When is the last time an employer showed interest in their personal goals?

Follow these 5 steps regularly and I believe you will find that they will make the millennials in your company feel important. That, I believe, will also cut down on the staggering cost of millennial turnover.

BECOME A GREAT LEADER IN 5 STEPS!

You can become a great leader in 5 steps and great leaders make more money than the average person. True leadership, these days, seems to be short in supply. However, if you seek to achieve greatness, then we need to focus on leadership. Not the dictatorial type that insists on others doing what they want them to do. I’m talking about leadership that makes the other person want to do what you want them to do.

I’m a graduate of The Dale Carnegie Course. I took it years ago, while I was in college, and learned a number of simple leadership traits that have helped me tremendously through the years.

From that course, and from my many years of running companies and being a professional speaker, I’ve assembled a list of 5 steps that I believe could help anyone become a better leader.

1. BECOME A GREAT STUDENT

Become a great leader by reading.Become a great leader in 5 steps by continuing your education. My college degree, in Journalism, Public Relations, and Advertising, was just the beginning of my education. My real education, over many years, has been a study diet of being a perpetual student. In the Dale Carnegie Course, I learned about Carnegie’s best-selling book “How to Win Friends and Influence People.” This is not only a great human relations book, but it’s also a great book on leadership.

I came to realize that it was much more valuable to read one book many times than to read many books one time only. Thus, I read that book once a month, every month, for five years – 60 times! Repetition is the mother of skill. Now those thoughts are a part of me.

Thus, whether it’s that book, or another one that you feel can help with your leadership skills, read it over and over. When you have a difficult leadership moment, go in your office and read a page in that book. The thoughts will shift your gears and help you get through the moment more productively.

By the way, if you want to be an exceptional leader, I would encourage you to take The Dale Carnegie Course!

2. MOTIVATE YOURSELF EVERY MORNING

Become a great leader in 5 steps by starting the morning right.Become a great leader in 5 steps by being aware of whose watching. If we are to lead others, we must be aware of the following: THE GROUP RUNS AT THE SPEED OF THE LEADER! That’s right. We can’t expect other people to follow us if we’re not showing great leadership traits. And that begins when we wake up and get our day started. Be careful what you do when you first wake up!

The first 15 minutes of each day set our mood for the whole day. May I suggest you turn off radio and television news the first thing each morning? Many years ago I was a newscaster. They didn’t tell us to find positive stories. Our slogan was: “If it bleeds, it leads!” In fact, I suggest not watching the late TV news before going to sleep. Most of that is full of murder and mayhem.

Thus, I suggest you declare positive affirmations the first thing each morning and the last thing each night. Here are some suggested affirmations:

“Everything I touch prospers and succeeds. I’m a people person and a great leader. I’m a very good listener and I help people come up with their own ideas.”

Don’t analyze the affirmations. Just declare what you want and watch how that sets your mood for the whole day.

In addition to your affirmations in the morning, I suggest you read two or three pages in the Carnegie book each day. When you get through with the book, read it over again and again.

3. BECOME AN EXCEPTIONAL LISTENER

Become a great leader by listening.Become a great leader in 5 steps by becoming an exceptional listener. With so much electronics taking people’s attention these days, who is truly listening to anyone? Surveys have been made to determine why people leave their jobs voluntarily? Money is not the number one answer. The real answer is that they weren’t made to feel important. People will do more for a feeling of importance than they will for money.

Dale Carnegie said that people need to feel important!” Notice, he didn’t say they “want” to feel important. He said they “need” to feel important. According to the Dale Carnegie Course people, “Only 17% of employees are satisfied in their job.” And, they further stated, “45% of employees are planning on leaving their job in the next 12 months.”

This type of turnover is very expensive! I believe that a major explanation for those numbers is that most leaders fail to understand that people “need” to feel important. They think that if they throw enough money at a situation, surely people will be happy. Not so. If we mistreat people, they will eventually have had it with us and 45% plan to leave.

The main way we can make people feel important is by talking less and listening more. God gave us two ears and one mouth. Perhaps we should look at those proportions. Great leaders make people feel important by listening attentively to them.

So, when employees who report to you want to talk with you, please close your computer and put down your phone. Grab a notepad and take notes. And not electronically. On an actual notepad. And, rather than make them feel as if you want them to stop, state the following: “Tell me more.”

Then, when they have completed their point or points, ask them how they would resolve the situation. Don’t give in to the urge to give advice. A great leader let’s other people come up with their own ideas.

4. USE THE “FOLLOW ME” THEORY OF LEADERSHIP

Being a great leader means people follow you.Become a great leader in 5 steps by making people realize that you are willing to first do what you ask them to do. I was born in Israel. My family immigrated to the U.S. when I was 9. Since its birth in 1948, Israel has become a miracle in growing its economy and becoming a world leader in technical developments. Other than the U.S., there are more companies on the NASDAQ from Israel than any other country in the world. Some 8 million people, in a very small country, are doing amazing things!

Everyone, both men and women, serve in the military in Israel. It is in that military that they learn certain leadership skills that I believe are really valuable. Military leaders do not order their soldiers to do anything they are not willing to do first. Thus, their theory of leadership in the military is “follow me!”

Thus, when people in Israel get out of the army and either start or run companies, they follow the same theory of leadership. They do not ask their employees to do anything they are not willing to do first.

They also have a way of identifying problems and solutions quickly. Executives in Israel have an open door policy. Anyone can walk in at any time. They just have to fill out a form first. That form is called “The Opportunity Form”. It has three questions: What is the problem? What is your solution? And, if it takes money, how much? This is a great way to get right to the heart of the problem and to get people to come up with their own ideas. After all, people will fight for their own ideas.

5. BE HEARTY IN YOUR APPROBATION AND LAVISH IN YOUR PRAISE

Become a great leader by praising.Become a great leader in 5 steps by showing appreciation to others. Since people will do more for a feeling of importance then they will for money, giving people proper recognition is really important when it comes to great leadership.

Carnegie said, when it comes to recognition, we should be hearty in our approbation (approval) and lavish in our praise. When an employee does something special, recognize that person in front of others, perhaps at a company meeting, and give them genuine compliments for doing a great job. You will make that person feel important and you’ll encourage others to also do a better job.

Most people only hear from their boss when they do something wrong. That’s the opposite of good leadership. Carnegie said, “Look for the good and, as much as possible, disregard the bad.” Great leaders focus on what is going right and make a big deal out of that. It doesn’t mean they don’t take care of problems. They just don’t focus on them.

Speaking of focus, if you wish to be a better leader, why not focus on these 5 steps to becoming a better leader for 90 days and see what happens.

HABITS NEED CHANGING TO GET US THERE!

Habits need changing to get us where we want to go.

Habits of our past need changing in order to get us where we want to be. However, one good habit to promote is reading the right books because reading builds character.

I promote two foundational books. They are: How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie and Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. Now I want to recommend a third book: What Got You Here Won’t Get You There by Marshall Goldsmith. He’s an executive coach for top corporations worldwide.

CHANGE THINGS TO GET TO THE NEXT LEVEL!

What Goldsmith relates in this book is that certain workplace habits that got us to certain levels of success are not the traits that are going to get us to the next level.

Concepts such as not being open to feedback, not apologizing when we’re wrong, not being a good listener, not saying ‘thank you’, not following up and so forth.

BAD HABITS ARE ROADBLOCKS IN DISGUISE!

Someone said that our habits either make us or break us. Some of them, like not really listening to people, can be so subtle and yet so destructive.

Goldsmith says in the book, “Behavioral issues become so important in the upper rungs of the corporate ladder. And, with all other things being equal, your people skills (or lack of them) become more pronounced the higher up you go. In fact, even when all other things are not equal, your people skills often make the difference in how high you go.” In other words, he said that the people skills are much more valuable than technical sills!

You might want to read this book and see if there are some areas where you can use improvement with certain habits. Some of the thoughts I read about certainly struck home with me! Thus, after reading the book, and if you need to improve your people skills, may I suggest The Dale Carnegie Course. I took it years ago and found it very beneficial.

A PEOPLE SKILLS AFFIRMATION

“I’m working on my people skills so I can get where I want to go.”
