Become friendlier and succeed bigger is a concept that most people miss completely. And yet it’s a critical factor if we want to succeed at a higher level. Dale Carnegie, in the book “How to Win Friends and Influence People” said that there are all kinds of courses in ordinary schooling. However, he was not aware of any courses on how to get along with people and how to express a friendlier personality. Thus, he created such a course and, to this day, it is taught worldwide with amazing results. I personally took The Dale Carnegie Course years ago and benefited greatly from the simple, but life-changing concepts that I learned there. The Carnegie book describes 9 points that could help any of us become friendlier:

Become friendlier and succeed biggerOur ability to create great relationships is at the heart of success. Carnegie said that if we want to put the nails in the coffin of any relationship, we should criticize, condemn, or complain. And, he further stated, most fools do just that. He tells about notorious criminals like Al Capone and “Two Gun Crowley” and the fact that they didn’t criticize themselves. In fact, Al Capone, the gangster, felt that he gave people “the lighter side of life.” He believed he was a public benefactor. He didn’t blame himself for anything. Thus, what about the people you and I deal with every day? They usually don’t blame themselves for anything and often defend their actions.

If you feel strongly about criticizing someone, or complaining about something, Carnegie suggested that you do what Abraham Lincoln did when he was upset with a general during the Civil War. Lincoln wanted the general to attack a Confederate force at an opportune moment. The move could have shortened the length of the war. The general did not attack. Lincoln was furious. He wrote a detailed critical letter to the general expressing his dismay. What did the general do when he got it? Nothing. Lincoln never sent it. It was found in his records years later. Thus, if you feel like criticizing, condemning, or complaining, write a detailed letter to the person and put it in a drawer for a few days. Chances are you’ll never send it and you’ll save yourself a setback toward bigger success.

Become friendlier and succeed biggerBecome friendlier and succeed bigger means giving honest and sincere appreciation. Carnegie said that people perform at a much higher level when their efforts are being appreciated. Carnegie related that John Dewey, one of America’s most profound philosophers, said that the deepest urge in human nature is the desire to be important. He said that “This desire makes you want to wear the latest styles, drive the latest cars, and talk about  your brilliant children.”

Carnegie further stated, “It is this desire that lures many boys and girls into joining gangs and engaging in criminal activities. The average young criminal, according to E.P. Mulrooney, onetime police commissioner of New York, is filled with ego, and his first request after arrest is for those lurid newspapers that make him out a hero. The disagreeable prospect of serving time seems remote so long as he can gloat over his likeness sharing space with pictures of sports figures, movie and TV stars, and politicians. Thus, when you give honest and sincere appreciation, that makes people feel important and escalates your success.

Become friendlier and succeed biggerBecome friendlier and succeed bigger by being aware that the only way to get people to do what we want is by focusing on what other people want. Carnegie said, “Why talk about want we want? That is childish. Absurd. Of course, you are interested in what you want. You are eternally interested in it. But no one else is. The rest of us are just like you: we are interested in what we want. So, the only way on earth to influence other people is to talk about what they want and show them how to get it.”

Carnegie also said, “Remember that tomorrow when you are trying to get somebody to do something. If, for example, you don’t want your children to smoke, don’t preach at them, and don’t talk about what you want; but show them that cigarettes may keep them from making the basketball team or winning the hundred-yard dash.” Thus, if you want to become friendlier, and gain greater success, look for the reasons of why the other person might want to do that which you desire.

Become friendlier and succeed biggerBecome friendlier and succeed bigger by becoming genuinely interested in other people. Carnegie said that the people who cause the most harm are those who aren’t interested in anyone but themselves. A study by the New York Telephone Company showed that the word most frequently used in phone conversations was the word “I”. It was used 3,900 times in 500 telephone conversations. Carnegie stated, “When you see a group photograph that you are in, whose picture do you look for first? If we merely try to impress people and get people interested in us, we will never have many true, sincere friends. Friends, real friends, are not made that way.”

Carnegie declared, “If we want to make friends, let’s greet people with animation and enthusiasm. When somebody calls you on the telephone, use the same psychology. Say “Hello” in tones that bespeak how pleased you are to have the person call. Showing a genuine interest in others not only wins friends for you, but may develop in its customers a loyalty to your company.” My mother was genuinely interested in other people and that was reflected in the success of her business. She said that everybody’s got a story and she felt she could learn something valuable from everyone she met. It’s no wonder people liked her so much!

Become friendlier and succeed biggerBecome friendlier and succeed bigger by smiling more. It takes fewer muscles to smile than it does to frown. And yet, it appears that many people make the extra effort to frown. It’s no wonder people don’t consider them friendly. Carnegie talks about Charles Schwab, the man that Andrew Carnegie made the president of U.S. Steel many years ago: “Charles Schwab told me his smile had been worth a million dollars. And he was probably understating the truth. For Schwab’s personality, his charm, his ability to make people like him, were almost wholly responsible for his extraordinary success; and one of the most delightful factors in his personality was his captivating smile.”

Dale Carnegie further related, “Actions speak louder than words, and a smile says, ‘I like you. You make me happy. I am glad to see you.’ That is why dogs make such a hit. They are so glad to see us that they almost jump out of their skins. So, naturally, we are glad to see them.” If you’re not used to smiling a lot, just experiment for one week. Make a concerted effort to smile at 5 strangers every day. Watch how much friendlier other people will be to you because you’re going to be friendlier to them.

Become friendlier and succeed biggerBecome friendlier and succeed bigger by remembering people’s names and calling them by name. Carnegie said that the most important thing in life, to all of us, is our name. Otherwise, why would someone give a fortune to have their name put on a building that will last much longer than their life? Carnegie stated, “This policy of remembering and honoring the names of his friends and business associates was one of the secrets of Andrew Carnegie’s leadership. He was proud of the fact that he could call many of his factory workers by their names, and he boasted that while he was personally in charge, no strike ever disturbed his flaming steel mills.”

When texting, other than to a family member or close friend, may I suggest you always use the other person’s first name and sign with your name? The same goes for e-mails. When meeting people, repeat their name several times. The repetition will solidify their name in your mind and it will make them feel important. Mention the other person’s name several times in phone conversations and watch what a better reception you get to whatever ideas you’re sharing.

Become friendlier and succeed biggerBecome friendlier and succeed bigger by being a very good listener and encourage others to talk about themselves. God gave us two ears and one mouth. Maybe we should look at these proportions. However, these days, with all of our electronics, who’s paying attention to anyone? Thus, the person who is an active listener, really paying attention, is considered to be friendlier and given more respect. Carnegie stated, “What is the secret, the mystery, of a successful business interview? Well, according to former Harvard president Charles W. Eliot, ‘There is no mystery about successful business intercourse… Exclusive attention to the person who is speaking to you is very important. Nothing else is so flattering as that.”

My mother, who I mentioned became very successful in business, literally had air brakes on her words. She listened very intently. Thus, if she felt the other person wanted to say something, she would stop talking and say, “What were you just thinking?” With her gentle and caring tone of voice, everyone opened up to her. And, if they had a different point of view, she gently said: “Tell me more.” She was interested in other people’s viewpoints and said: “I can learn from everyone I meet.” She also realized that the person controlling a conversation is not the one who’s talking. It’s the one who’s asking the questions.

Become friendlier and succeed biggerBecome friendlier and succeed bigger by talking in terms of the other person’s interests. Of course, you and I are much more interested in our own interests. So are the other people. Thus, if we want to escalate our success, let’s put ourselves in their shoes and talk about their interests.

Carnegie related, “Everyone who was ever a guest of Theodore Roosevelt was astonished at the range and diversity of his knowledge. Whether his visitor was a cowboy or a Rough Rider, a New York politician or a diplomat, Roosevelt knew what to say. And how was it done? The answer was simple. Whenever Roosevelt expected a visitor, he sat up late the night before, reading up on the subject in which he knew his guest was particularly interested. For Roosevelt knew, as all leaders know, that the royal road to a person’s heart is to talk about the things he or she treasures most.”

As a professional speaker, I’m very aware that my presentations go much better when I get a lot of audience members to talk. I ask a lot of questions and poll my audience regularly. I tell people that I’m not really a speaker. I’m a facilitator. I’ve come to get them to talk. I guide the process with my questions and then I get them to participate. Thus, I find that this process gets me much further than if I had simply come to lecture. I also find that I succeed bigger when I make other people around me shine. By talking in terms of their interests, I come across as being much friendlier.

Become friendlier and succeed biggerBecome friendlier and succeed bigger by making other people feel important. Carnegie said that we don’t ‘want’ to feel important. He said that we all ‘need’ to feel important. He also stated that “people will do more for a feeling of importance that they will for money!” I’m thinking that if I throw enough money at a situation, surely it will fix it. Not if I mistreat you. You’ll eventually have had it with me. Carnegie further related, “The unvarnished truth is that almost all the people you meet feel themselves superior to you in some way, and a sure way to their hearts is to let them realize in some subtle way that you recognize their importance, and recognize it sincerely. Remember what Emerson said: “Every man I meet is my superior in some way.”

If you don’t do this regularly, and realize how much of a shortcut this could be to your greater success, may I suggest that you make a sign that sits on our desk where you can see it every day: EVERYONE IS IMPORTANT! Look at it every day and soon you will be making other people feel important. Do it sincerely and watch what others will do to help you achieve great things.

Why leadership is so important

Why leadership is so important is a topic that’s very important when it comes to getting ahead and being successful. Without leadership, we are relegated to following those who are leaders – whether we want to or not. We usually have to follow their path and our goals are put on the back burner. Some think that certain people are naturally-born leaders. That may be true in some cases. However, I think that leadership traits can be learned by anyone who seeks to achieve greatness and take their life to a great new level.

Why leadership is so importantThere is no middle ground in life. Even if we think we’re on the right track, if we’re not moving, we’re going to get run over. When it comes to leadership, we’re subconsciously making a choice every day. We either make the extra effort to lead or we automatically get relegated to following someone else. And, if that someone else is not leading us in a good direction, we won’t be happy when we get to the destination.

Since we are the total sum of the five people with whom we spend the most time, it’s important to take mental inventory and ask ourselves if we want to follow them. If where these people are in their lives is not where we want to go, we need to make a change. Decide to become a leader and follow the road that leads to where you want to go. Write down your goals, break them down into believable pieces, and then declare the following affirmation the first thing each morning and the last thing each night:

I am a talented, capable, strong leader. I have defined my goals in writing and am creating my great future.

Don’t analyze these affirmations. Just state them, out loud, the first thing each morning and the last thing each night. Watch what happens in the next few months!

Why leadership is so importantWhy leadership is so important takes many steps. Every great achievement begins with a first step. So, whether you think you have some leadership abilities, or none at all, we can start with a small step TODAY! Make a list of 5 things you could do to show leadership in your life. Perhaps you need to start a modest exercise program, improve your diet, pay more attention to your most important relationships, read a personal development book, or whatever.

Choose one of those subjects, or another, and take an initial step today! In most case, the hardest step in any important goal is the first one. After that, inertia often takes over and its easier to keep going. It’s like the old-fashioned trains with the big metal wheels on the engines. It took quite a bit of effort to get them going down the track. However, once they got going, it took quite a bit of effort to stop the train. That’s momentum.

So, if you choose to show leadership by starting a modest exercise program, how about a walk around the block? That’s a start! Keep doing that for a number of days and you may feel like walking around two blocks. Eventually, you may be using a treadmill for a half hour a day that will get you in great shape and help you lose calories.

Why leadership is so importantWhy leadership is so important is often based on a great attitude. Great leaders do not generally wake up with a great attitude every day. They have challenges like everyone else. In fact, because they are leaders, their challenges are often bigger than the challenges of followers. However, leaders do what has to be done, when it has to be done, whether they feel like it or not.

Leaders get upset and depressed like everyone else. However, they realize that they cannot afford to stay in a rut for too long. The price for that is just too expensive. Thus, they have developed techniques to get themselves back up quickly. One way that I find helps me, when I’m down, is to declare the following affirmation on a daily basis:

I always do the most valuable thing first and quickly!

We most always have choices when it comes to getting things done. Do we do item A or B? Let’s say that A is something easier that we want to get off our list today. However, item B is more valuable to our future. Leaders are leaders because they have gotten in the habit of doing the most valuable thing first, even if they don’t want to. When you declare the above affirmation regularly, you’ll get in the habit of doing the most valuable thing first and you’ll be developing leadership.

You might want to make the following sign, in big type on 8 ½ x 11 paper, and produce it on bright yellow paper:

Every Day I Play Like a Champion!

Laminate it and post it where you can see it every day. Then, each day, just touch the sign. The impact on your attitude is instant! Leadership comes from developing an inner feeling that you do indeed play like a champion every day!

Why leadership is so importantWhy leadership is so important is highlighted by how leaders start each day. The first 15 minutes of each day will set our mood for the entire day. Leaders realize that and thus they do something valuable with that time. They actually begin their day the night before by writing down the 5 most important tasks they need to tackle the next day. They do so in the order of their importance. This is like a blueprint for a house. It’s a blueprint for the next day’s productivity. Since the brain does not turn off during the night, it might work on some of these thoughts and give you some good ideas for the next day when you wake up.

Leaders don’t watch television news before they go to sleep. Having been a newscaster in the past, I remember that we were not told to go find positive stories to put on the news. Murder and mayhem was part of every newscast. Thus, if we watch that before we go to sleep, that sets up negative thoughts in our minds as we fall asleep.

Then, when you wake up, may I suggest that you not turn on television news, listen to the radio, or read the paper. Once again, much of that is negative. Instead, why not declare positive affirmations, such as the ones above, the first thing each morning. This step would be good to repeat just before you fall asleep at night.

After the affirmations, may I suggest you listen to a positive audio message. You can find some of these on YouTube. Next, I suggest reading one page in either or both of the following books that I recommend: How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie or Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill.

After that, I suggest a little exercise every day, putting a dollar bill in an envelope, and looking at a picture of your next reward. Since credit cards don’t seem real to the mind, it makes an impact when we handle cash and save it. Getting a picture of your next reward will keep you motivated.

Why leadership is so importantWhy leadership is so important is evidenced by the fact that most leaders were once followers. In fact, a good leader is at first a good follower. Identify someone who has done what you want to do and ask them for advice. People are usually honored when you ask them for advice. Tell that person that you admire their achievements and would like to emulate their success.

Ask them what steps they would take to get to where they are. Follow their guidance and report back regularly. If something doesn’t work out, ask them what they would have done differently if they were you.

This is a really valuable step. Most great leaders do not waste time trying to reinvent the wheel. They find someone who already has the wheel they want, ask for advice, and follow the steps they took. Write letters to famous people you admire, tell them why you admire them, and ask for advice. What if some of them respond and what if some of them may want to help with your success?

To become a great leader, we can take one step today and another one tomorrow. Follow these ideas and see what happens. I believe that we all, including you, have greatness within us! I think we can all accomplish incredible things! Start showing leadership today and watch what that will do for your future!

“I’m a very strong, capable, successful leader! I bring the best out in everyone around me.!”

How to become more creative

How to become more creative is a topic that any ambitious person should pay attention to and cultivate. It is creativity that results in new medications, cell phones, the internet, man going to the moon, supersonic speed, and much more. However, it’s unfortunate that the majority of people don’t think they are very creative. Thus, a lot of new ideas, that could have made a positive impact on many people, are often left unearthed in people’s minds. What if we could open up that treasure chest and allow creative ideas to flow out easily and often? Thus, if you’re open to this possibility, I present to you some ideas that could show how creative you could be. I believe there’s a goldmine in your mind. Let’s go mining…

How to become more creativeHow to become more creative is a question many people ask. They look at those who are creative and envy their ability to come up with new ideas. I believe that we are all very creative. However, some people have just sold themselves on that fact and many people have sold themselves on the opposite. Whichever way we see anything, we’re right. Thus, we have to be careful what we focus on because that expands. We’re all declaring affirmations every day – those thoughts that run through our minds at about 1,500 words a minute. Many of those thoughts are negative because it’s easier for all those ideas to settle in our minds. It takes a concerted effort to think positively.

If you wish to become more creative, and thus take your success to a higher level, we begin by changing the thoughts in your mind that my form roadblocks. I suggest declaring the following affirmation, the first thing each morning and the lasting thing each night, for the foreseeable future.

Everything I touch prospers and succeeds. I’m a very creative person. I come up with great ideas regularly. These ideas are bringing me greater success and amazing financial rewards. I am a Champion!

Don’t analyze these words. Just declare them, out loud, each morning and evening and let the powerful computer in your brain work on those ideas. Watch what’s about to happen. I would guess that you’ll come up with something amazing in the next 90 days!

How to become more creativeHow to become more creative means doing things that you don’t normally do. Get away mentally and physically and watch what that will do for your creativity. This doesn’t have to be an expensive trip. It would be a weekend away to a national park. A short trip to a city you’ve never seen, a hike on a trail you’ve never experienced, or visiting a friend you haven’t seen in a while. What happens, when we do something new, is that it opens up the mind to new things.

What we’re doing is allowing time for the mind to relax and to mentally wander. We have more power in our brains than any computer man has ever created. We just have to change the programming so we can come up with new ideas. Thus, when we’re distracted by new surroundings, or new activities, the mind relaxed and we allow creative juices to flow. Keep a notepad handy. Then, when an idea comes up, just write it down.

The mind can also wonder when we’re working on a hobby, meditating, exercising, or taking a walk in the park. These types of activities un-focus the brain and allow it to do what it does when we’re not focused on something specific. Our brains were designed to do amazing things. Let’s create the atmosphere where that can happen. Expect amazing ideas to come at those moments and they will. We don’t get what we hope or wish for – we get what we expect!

How to become more creativeHow to become more creative means that we understand what happens at night. Our brains do not have an “OFF” switch when we go to sleep. It continues to operate on the basis of “business as usual”. Did you ever go to sleep thinking about a problem and then wake up in the morning with what seemed like a solution? We all have. That’s because your brain was working on the problem during the night. These can be very productive hours if we program our minds in the right direction. Let’s do that with creativity.

Thus, when you lay down at night, just say to yourself the following: “I am a very creative person. I come up with amazing ideas!” Say those phrases over and over until you fall asleep. Keep a notepad on the bed stand. If you wake up at night with an idea, write it down and go back to sleep. You may be shocked by some of the ideas you write down during the night or those you have when you wake up. You’re harnessing the tremendous power of your brain to allow your amazing creativity to surface.

From now on, the phrase “Just sleep on it!” should have a new and very productive meaning for you. That could be the time that you prove to yourself how very creative you are.

How to improve creativityHow to become more creative is a concept that is greatly enhanced by reading certain books. Reading not only builds character, but it expands the mind and takes us to places we’ve never been. The two books that I have studied the most, and that I believe have enhanced my creativity for many years, are: “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie and “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill.

The Carnegie book is full of fascinating stories about human nature, how to get along with other people, rules for winning friends and influencing people, and other ideas about personal magnetism. The Hill book, although it’s made more millionaires than any other book in history, is basically an ATTITUDE book. It contains many stories of people who started with nothing, came up with an idea, and made a success of that idea. There are creative concepts in every chapter of the book.

I read both of these books many times over. At the same time, I also read many biographies and find that doing so helps my creativity greatly. Thus, I get involved in other people’s stories, the challenges they went through, and how they achieved great things by using their creativity. I especially like inventors like Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Alexander Graham Bell, the Wright Brothers, and so forth. As I travel, I make it point, whenever possible, to visit historical sites that deal with some of my reading. I recently visited Dayton, Ohio, where the Wright Brothers lived, had their bicycle shop, and flew some of their early model airplanes at a nearby airfield. Those kinds of experiences, after reading about the subject, have greatly helped my creativity.

How to become more creativeHow to become more creative can be enhanced by turning off the TV, the phone, and the computer for just a half hour a night. Get in a comfortable chair, lean back, put on some headphones, and listen to beautiful music. If you look on YouTube for meditation music, you’ll find many selections. Put one on, close your eyes, and allow your mind to relax. It’s hard to think about more than one thing at a time. Think about the music.

Watching television, or surfing the Internet for hours, can numb the mind. It’s like a mind-killer. Many of the images we see on TV are of violence and conflicts. Those close the mind down rather than open it up. And I believe that limits our creativity. On the other hand, making your surroundings quiet, even for just 30 minutes, and listening to beautiful music, will take your mind away from the distractions and allow creative brain cells to operate. At the end of the 30 minutes, if any ideas come to your mind, write them down. If none come, don’t worry about it. Do the same thing the next night. Within 30 days of doing this, I believe that you’ll fund your creativity has been greatly enhanced.

What if you could come up with a million dollar idea or solve a problem that has bothered many people for a long time? What if you could take your life to a whole new level of success? I believe that we all have the ability to be very creative. Use some of these ideas above, for just 90 days, and watch what happens. I think you are special, you are unique, and I believe that you are destined for greatness because you are very creative!

“I’m a very talented, creative person. I enhance my creativity daily with certain positive steps that help me greatly!”

Become a confident speaker.

Become a confident speaker and watch what it does for your future. However, getting up and speaking in front of people is something foreign to most people. After all, it’s one of the big fears in life. Thus, getting up in front of people to speak can be frightening. “What if I forget what I’m talking about?” is a common perception. However, the ability to get up and speak confidently in front of people is a shortcut to your greater success. When you can do this confidently, people give you credit for being intelligent, thoughtful, and a good leader. People will want to help you because you’ll come across as a successful person.

Although I am a professional trainer and speaker now, this was not easy for me at the beginning. I took speech courses in high school because I liked theater. At the opening of assemblies at Will Rogers High School, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, we always started with a student reciting the American’s Creed by memory. Thus, I worked really hard to memorize it and was given the opportunity to do it several times while at Rogers. However, my stage fright got to me every time I appeared in assemblies before hundreds of my fellow students. As a result, I never once got it right and was embarrassed every time I forgot the lines.

It was The Dale Carnegie Course in college and a lot of trial and error that led me to some basic points that helped me become a confident speaker. Thus, if you want to become a confident speaker, I would greatly encourage you to take that course. As a result of the course, I now teach others to use certain points that I learned and people find that these ideas have helped them to quickly and easily feel confident in front of an audience.

Become a confident speaker.Don’t ever agree to speak about something you don’t know anything about. Thus, if someone were to ask me to speak about rocket science, I would have to decline. I’m not an expert on rocket science. I’d be glad to call NASA or Goddard and get them a rocket scientist. This may seem like a simple point, but it’s important. Dale Carnegie wrote a book called “The Quick and Easy Way to Public Speaking”. In that book, he said that if you wanted to have someone give a great speech, have them speak about something they feel strongly about.

Become a confident speaker.Become a confident speaker and you won’t experience what happened to me. As I related, I told you what happened in high school when I memorized The American’s Creed. On another occasion, I also memorized a speech for a high school speech contest. I worked really hard on it and felt I was totally prepared. However, when I got up in front of 1,000 high school students and started that speech, there came a point when my mind went blank. I couldn’t tell you my name, rank, or serial number. As a result, I was totally embarrassed and will never forget that horrible experience. That’s when I realized that memorizing a speech is a road to disaster.

I now recommend that you never get up in front of an audience without some basic notes. Not a word-for-word speech. Use 3 X 5 cards and have 3 points on each card. NUMBER THE CARDS! I’ve been there when I didn’t number the cards. It was disaster when I dropped the cards and had no idea where I was. Using cards will give you confidence. As a result, even if you read every point, with confidence, and your points are good, an audience will never say, “You were reading your cards!” No. If your ideas are good, and can be of value to them, they will remember what you said.

Become a confident speaker.Become a confident speaker by being aware of the setup of the room where you will be speaking. Most speakers never think about the setup and how important that is to your success as a speaker. To start with, I suggest no empty chairs. Ask the host to set up fewer chairs than the number of people expected. Then, when every chair is filled, additional chairs can be added. This makes your event look important. Good lighting is important. Make sure every light is on and, wherever possible, open the shades for natural light. Cram more people into a small room. This is another point that makes your meeting seem important. A small group in a large room takes away from your effectiveness as a speaker.

No Distractions!

Watch out for any distractions. Thus, get rid of loud noises wherever possible. Ask people to either turn off their cell phones or you will stop when you hear one and ask the person what the call or text was all about. Be very interactive. When speaking, give a major point and then ask a few members of the audience how they felt about that point. Don’t ask for volunteers. Just simply ask people in the first row, or the third row, one by one, “What did you like best about that point?”

Keep people moving. An audience that sits too long isn’t paying attention to the speaker. Thus, every 30 minutes, ask everyone to stand up, shake hands with the person close to them, and tell them that they’re glad that person is there. Give people the rules for the meeting. Tell them that if they need to go to the bathroom, just go and come back. If they have a back problem, and cannot sit for too long, tell them to simply get up and move around. A comfortable audience is paying attention to you!

I have more details on conducting powerful meetings in the related article at the bottom of this post: Create Powerful Meetings for Greater Profits.

Become a confident speaker.Become a confident speaker by telling stories. I have found that audiences don’t want to hear a bunch of deep psychology. They like hearing my stories. And they will like hearing yours! Be authentic. Your experiences, especially the challenging ones, will be memorable to your audiences. They will learn from how you got through those moments and perhaps be inspired to get through a similar situation. You have experiences that are unique to you and people can often relate to your struggles.

I’ve almost died three times in my life. I’m fine now. But telling those stories, and how I got through those moments, seems to resonate with my audiences. My mother was from Poland, father from Austria, and I was born in Israel. My family immigrated to the U.S. when I was 9. None of us spoke a word of English at the time. By the time I was in high school, I had learned enough English to become a newscaster on a large radio station in Tulsa. I then got fired because of a German accent and I couldn’t read well on the air. I learned to overcome that and got back to radio. All of that is my story and people find it interesting. You have your stories and I believe people will be moved by yours.

Become a confident speaker.Become a confident speaker by using a simple outline, one that you can prepare in minutes and be totally prepared to deliver a great message with enthusiasm. Taking for granted that you’re going to speak about a topic you know a lot about, you will pose a question, make three points, and give a conclusion.

Let’s say you’re going to talk about a favorite hobby – playing tennis. Here is a simplified version of the outline I’m proposing. This procedure has helped many people that I have trained to become confident in front of an audience.

Pose a Question

Why do I enjoy playing tennis?

Give 3 Points

1. I get to be outdoors.

2. It is very good exercise.

3. I get to spend time with friends.

That’s why I enjoy playing tennis.

Be sure to tell your audience that you have 3 points to cover. Audiences like following an outline in their minds. That will keep them tuned in to you. At each point say, “Point number 1, point number 2, or point number 3.”

You could then extend this brief speech by sub-points under each of the 3 main points. Once you have written down all of your points, transfer the information to 3 X 5 cards and number the cards. When you are introduced, start with the question and read your cards.

Tell the person introducing you that you want a short introduction. The best intro for me is usually how the group heard about me and why the person introducing me is excited that I’m there. That’s it. An enthusiastic, short introduction is much better than reading a long bio of the speaker.

The enthusiasm suggestion also pertains to you. Deliver your message with enthusiasm, smile, and watch how well an audience will react to you.

Follow this outline and I believe you’ll be pleasantly surprised with how simple it can be for you to get up and speak effectively in front of any audience.

“I follow a simple, written outline, on cards, and am able to speak confidently in front of any audience.”

Why motivation is so important?

Why motivation is so important is a question that is often asked by many people. The majority of people don’t understand why a few people seem to be motivated all the time while many people aren’t the same. As a professional speaker, it took me a while to realize that I cannot motivate anyone in my audiences. The only way for me to truly motivate someone is to spend all day, every day, with them. I’ll need to hold their hand and guide them through every moment of the day. That’s just not feasible and has no lasting value.

All I can do is share good, proven ideas and see what happens. The people who are motivated will pick up some of those ideas and run with them. To the rest, my time with them will be soon forgotten.

Why motivation is so important? Without motivation, Columbus wouldn’t have sailed for the new world, Edison would not have invented the light bulb, Ford the car, the Wright Brothers the airplane. At the same time, without motivation, people wouldn’t go after a college degree, would not lose weight, and wouldn’t work to improve a relationship. They would not strive to become better with money and would not go after a bigger position at work. Thus, to achieve any level of success in life, we’ve got to realize that motivation is very important. If you want to achieve more in your life, and you’re not sure how to get motivated, here are 5 steps you can take.

Why is motivation so importantWhy motivation is so important? It’s like a blueprint for your future. In one of my careers, I was a carpenter and a builder, following my father’s work. When I was 13 or 14, we lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in a small house. My parents decided to add a bathroom, a den, and two bedrooms onto the house. My father didn’t just order a bunch of wood, have it dropped off in our backyard, and sit back, hoping that the extension onto the house would magically appear.

Nope. My father had blueprints drawn, with every detail, showing exactly what was about to be built. Without specific plans, showing every detail, that building project would have never become a reality. As I helped my father build that extension, we followed the blueprints to the letter. Thus, at the end, the project turned out great because we followed a specific, written plan.

How do most people go about their lives? With no specific, written goals. Thus, they wonder why life throws them curves. It’s like a boat with no rudder. It’s going to end up wherever the wind chooses. No matter how old you are, don’t waste your time on what could have been. The only thing we have is this moment, a moment that will be the past of 5 years from now.

Start your written plan NOW. There’s a wonderful saying, “Follow your dreams, they know the way.” Thus, write down what you want in your life 5 years from today. Where do you want to live? How do you want your family situation to look and where do you want to be in your career. If you need to improve your health or financial situation, write down where you want to be in 5 years. Then, break those goals down to what portions you need to accomplish in the next 12 months. Next, break those goals down to the steps necessary in the next 30 days. If you don’t believe some of those goals, lower them until you do believe. Now take action on those 30-day goals. Walt Disney said, “The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.”

Get pictures of your goals and post them where you can see them every day. Look at those pictures and envision yourself in them! Just the fact that you have formed a clear blueprint of your future, and are taking small, initial steps, will help motivate you.

Why is motivation so importantWhy motivation is so important? It makes you a better person. In order to achieve your dreams, some personal development steps may need to be taken. It’s true, for things to change, we’ve got to change. Thus, in order to get motivated, you may want to declare some positive affirmations that will help your mind believe that you could achieve your goals blueprint. Here are some affirmations that I would suggest you declare, out loud, the first thing each morning and the last thing each night while you look at your pictures.

Everything I touch prospers and succeeds. I create great relationships, improve my health regularly, am managing my money productively, and creating opportunities at work to move ahead. I’m excited about my goals and am taking steps each day to accomplish them. I have a great attitude every day!

Why motivation is so importantWhy motivation is so important? It helps us overcome fear. Many people don’t get motivated to accomplish greatness because of fear. They’re afraid they will fail, that they may look foolish to others. If this is your problem, we have to find a way to deal with it so you can be properly motivated to achieve a great future. As the sign says, “On the other side of fear is freedom!” Action, even small steps, in the right direction, is a great antidote to fear.

The saying goes, “Fear knocked at the door, faith answered, and no one was there.” Another saying: “Courage doesn’t mean you don’t get afraid. Courage means you don’t let fear stop you.” Much of what we worry about never happens. Thus, fear is a big waste of time. If you make an effort and fail, in most cases you can start again. Total failure is not making any effort.

If fear is a problem for you, I suggest you read the Dale Carnegie book “How to Stop Worrying and Start Living.” He suggests that we live in day-tight compartments, focus on only what we can do today that is productive. Even if it’s a small step. Carnegie said that, if you’re worried about something, write down what you are worried about. Then write down what is the worst that could happen. Next, write down an action plan of what you would do if the worst were to happen. In most cases, this process will get rid of the fear. In addition, your positive daily affirmations will help strengthen your belief in your dreams. Strong beliefs, in the right direction, are a great antidote to worry.

Why motivation is so importantWhy motivation is so important? It helps to improve our attitude. And attitude is everything! No matter which way we look at our future, a bad attitude will kill motivation. Every morning, when we each wake up, we make a subconscious choice as to our attitude. Most people, because it’s simply easier, will gravitate toward a negative attitude and look at what’s wrong with their lives. The people who work at positive motivation, make an effort to direct their daily attitude in the right direction. They realize that it isn’t easy, but they know that it’s very important!

Since reading builds character, the right books can help our attitude greatly. It’s better to read one or two books, over and over again, than to read a bunch of books one time only. Repetition is the mother of skill. I suggest two of the best attitude and goal-setting books ever written. They are “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie and “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill.

In order to stay motivated, I suggest reading one or two pages in each book every day. Then, when you get through reading them, read them again. Read each book at least 3 or 4 times during the next couple of years. And, if you get depressed about the progress with your goals, pick up either book and read a page. The people stories and the stories about achievements of some very successful people will motivate you.

Why motivation is so importantWhy motivation is so important? It helps us identify with whom we should spend time. Staying motivated means you may need to stay away from certain people. We are the total sum of the five people we spend the most time with on a regular basis. Thus, if your friends don’t have specific goals that are admirable, maybe you need to get some new friends. Look for goal-oriented people who care about their personal relationships, stay healthy, manage money productively, have a positive attitude, and are working on exciting goals for their future.

Napoleon Hill, in “Think and Grow Rich”, described what he called a “Mastermind Group.” He defined that as a group of good people, coming together in a spirit of harmony, to encourage each other to achieve their dreams. This group could be anywhere from three to eight or nine people. Get together on a regular basis, maybe every two weeks, or monthly, and report to each other your progress on your most important goals. Look for ways to help each other achieve your dreams. Hill describes in the book a mastermind group, a long time ago, that included people like Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone, and Alexander Graham Bell. They used to get together regularly, share ideas, and encourage each other.

There you have it. Motivation is very important if we want our lives to be better. Zig Ziglar, the famous speaker, said: “Of course motivation is not permanent. But then, neither is bathing; but it is something you should do on a regular basis.”

“Everything I touch prospers and succeeds. I create great relationships, improve my health regularly, am managing my money productively, and creating opportunities at work to move ahead. I’m excited about my goals and am taking steps each day to accomplish them. I have a great attitude every day!”

Learn how to build better relationships.

Learn how to build better relationships and you’ll change your future for the better! It can seem difficult or even impossible to change a person’s approach to relationships once they have reached maturity. In fact, it is possible to alter the outcomes of nearly any situation and almost any individual’s approach to forming relationships. That’s because humans are social beings who desire acknowledgment and acceptance. Many individuals that have difficulty forming strong relationships have an uneasy relationship with themselves. That’s where a Building Better Relationships Speaker comes in.

An obvious but seldom acknowledged dimension of relationship-building is the reality that an individual’s attitude toward themselves shapes their interactions with others. Thus, if a person is insecure, or has a weak sense of their own worth, they may seek affirmation without showing interest or bring a negative attitude to interactions. This undermines their ability to form new relationships. An expert on relationships will often begin by directing participant’s attention inward and recommend daily positive affirmations. This is done before expanding out to address their ability to form relationships with others.

A Building Better Relationships speaker may recommend practices that require individuals to ask questions and truly listen to responses in order to demonstrate confidence and interest. Asking another person a series of simple questions about their origin, present location, family status, occupation, and lifelong aspirations can give people a basis for forming a bond within minutes. Meaningful relationships are founded on genuine curiosity and interest, and this exercise can lead to better social outcomes.

It can be relatively easy to begin new relationships, but it is more challenging to keep those connections developing over time. This is just as true of an individual’s relationship with themselves as with interpersonal relationships. As life between individuals in any relationship becomes a shared experience, there are countless opportunities to continue to develop and deepen mutual esteem and trust. Relationships take attention and dedication, and these are skills that can be learned.

If you are interested in empowering a group of people to build better relationships with themselves and others, you may want to consider booking a Building Better Relationships speaker for your next staff or group development event. The skills covered in a talk may sow seeds that improve relationships between coworkers, clients, customers, and friends. This can be applicable to nearly any relationship in the personal lives of attendees. A learning session can make a transformative difference in participants’ quality of life, connection, and communication. Visit the website for information.

Discover how to sabotage-proof your future.

Discover how to sabotage-proof your future and you’ll suddenly notice that things will improve. As a result, you’ll get a raise, get a promotion, or get more recognition. Most people, with their negative attitude or bad decisions, actually sabotage their future. Thus, they wonder why things don’t work out for them. They may feel that the universe has it out for them and they never get any breaks. They may feel that they never have good luck.

In reality, for most people, none of those things really affect their future. It is usually a few simple things that high achievers realize are roadblocks that must be avoided.

If you want to advance your career, get a raise, obtain an advanced degree, or whatever, here are some steps to take in order to make sure that you do not sabotage your future.

How to sabotage-proof your future.Discover how to sabotage-proof your future by being aware that you’re just 6 inches away from greater success – the distance between your ears. As a result, the beliefs that you have, whether good or bad, dictate your actions. Most people have been programmed from their past to think in certain ways that don’t help them. Thus, if your parents struggled with money, you may have a scarcity mentality. If people in your past had negative attitudes, chances are that you have that belief in your attitude.

There’s a computer term that explains how the brain works. It’s called GIGO – garbage in, garbage out. Thus, if we program our minds with a scarcity mentality, then we’ll get actions that come from a point of scarcity. The subconscious mind cannot tell the difference between something real and something imagined. Thus, whatever we’re thinking, good or bad, is taken by our minds as being real and then we act accordingly.

We’re all talking to ourselves at the rate of 1,500 words per minute. Most of those words, by nature, are negative. As a result, negative thoughts can lead to fear, apprehension, and insecurity. These attributes can sabotage a future. Thus, we have to take specific steps to overcome the negative inputs of our past and change our thoughts to a prosperity mentality. There is no law that says we can’t do that.

Use Positive Affirmations

Discover how to sabotage-proof your future.Discover how to sabotage-proof your future begins with positive affirmations – directions for the mind. Thus, if you need to improve your beliefs, the following affirmations will help:

Everything I touch prospers and succeeds. I spend time with positive, supportive people, am constantly learning and improving my personal development, staying out of debt, and saving money. Opportunities come to me from all directions. I am very creative, a great leader, and I solve problems. I am prosperous and I am a Champion!

State these affirmations, or supportive beliefs, the first thing every morning and the last thing every night, without analysis, and watch what happens in the next 90 days. We’re programming your mind for prosperity and expecting good things to happen.

How to sabotage-proof your future.Discover how to sabotage-proof your future means being careful with the people around us. It is said that we are the total sum of the five people we spend the most time with through the years. Thus, identify those five people and take inventory. Are these people successful? Do they live healthy lives? Do these people have happy, loving families? Are they prosperous and ambitious, responsible with money and supportive of your goals? Everyone in our lives is a member of one of two unions – either the building crew or the wrecking crew!

Take a mental inventory of those people’s lives. If you cannot answer “Yes” to the above questions, then spending time with these people is probably sabotaging your life. Whatever we focus on expands. If these people tend to have a negative attitude, you will expand that into your life. When they operate from a position of lack or fear, you will also expand that in your life. If they live paycheck to paycheck, spend money recklessly, and don’t have much in savings, those things will affect your life. May I suggest you stop listening to people who don’t have any money!

If too much of this sounds familiar, maybe it’s time to fire some of your friends. Seek out people who are more successful than you and ask them for advice. People are honored when we ask them for advice. Invite such people to lunch and look for a way to be of service to them. Dale Carnegie, in the book “How to Win Friends and Influence People”, said that people are as interested in us as we are in them. Show a lot of interest in people who are successful, get a prosperity attitude, and they will show interest in you. Look for ways to spend more time with people like that.

How to sabotage-proof your future.Discover how to sabotage-proof your future has a lot to do with continuous education. Most people stop their education when they graduate from college or a trade school. They figure that they’ve obtained their basic education and now it’s time to go to work. That line of thinking has sabotage written all over it. That’s when our real education should begin! High achievers are constantly learning and they’re always looking for ways to improve their people skills.

Research has shown that the most successful people aren’t the ones who know the most about their chosen profession. It isn’t the technical skills that result in people being happier and more successful. The reality is that the people who make the most money, and are the most successful, are the ones who are continuously learning and have developed their people skills way above average.

Reading, the right books, over and over, is a very productive way to continue our education. I have found that it’s much more productive to read one or two books, over and over, rather than a lot of books, one time only. I recommend two foundational books that have helped more people become successful than most any other books. They are How to Win Friends and Influence People and Think and Grow Rich.

Discover how to sabotage-proof your future.Read those two books at least three times over the next year or two and see what happens. Underline parts that seem important to you. Make them your success textbooks.

I would also recommend “The Dale Carnegie Course”. I took the course many years ago and found that it is an exceptional combination of human relations training as well as cultivating confidence while speaking in front of people. If you have an employee with great potential, and you feel that more confidence would help that person, send them to the course and watch what happens!

How to sabotage-proof your future.Discover how to sabotage-proof your future has much to do with how you manage money. Just as there are no courses in ordinary schooling on how to get along with people, there are also very few courses in how to manage money. Whether we feel comfortable or not with money has much to do with our confidence and our success. Thus, mishandling our money is a sure-fire way to sabotage our future.

If you were raised in a household where money was in short supply, you might have grown up thinking that you don’t deserve to have a lot of it. As a result, if your parents were always in debt, that tendency may have followed you into adulthood.

As adults, it’s not how much money we make. It’s how we manage it. If we don’t manage money well at the beginning of our career, when money may not be plentiful, we will never manage money when our income grows in the future. It’s a fact that when most people get raises, their expenditures go up.

Live a Little Below Your Means!

Discover how to sabotage-proof your future by realizing that most people live above their means and are usually a few weeks away from financial disaster. Successful people live a little below their means. Thus, they save a set percentage of their income every month. They pay in cash wherever possible and, if they want to buy something special, they often save for it rather than charging it. Realizing that credit card money is not really theirs, they use credit cards very sparingly and never carry balances from one month to another.

How to sabotage-proof your future. If you’re in debt at the moment, make it an important goal to stop charging, pay off those debts, and save money. Having money in the bank, and no debts, gives us confidence and will bring more opportunities our way. Also, carry a 100 dollar bill! That will make you feel prosperous. Have it where you can see it regularly in your wallet or purse. Also, put some 20 dollar bills around the house. Cash is real to our minds. Checks and credit cards are like playing Monopoly. Whatever we focus on expands. Thus, we want cash all around you!

Let take the word “sabotage” out of your future by paying attention to the 4 points above. Take action on these ideas and see what happens in the next few years. You’ll be getting rid of the roadblocks along the highway of life and allow very good things to happen down the road.

“Everything I touch prospers and succeeds. I spend time with positive, supportive people, am constantly learning and improving my personal development, staying out of debt, and saving money. Opportunities come to me from all directions. I am very creative, a great leader, and I solve problems. I am prosperous and I am a Champion!”
